Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
J. Crew: 30% off select items w/ GOSHOP including many summer suits
- Ludlow Italian Linen Cotton in Grey or “Walnut” – $382.20 ($546)
- Ludlow Japanese Seersucker in Navy or Grey Stripe – $319.20 ($456)
- Ludlow Italian Oxford Cloth in Melange Grey – $382.20 ($546)
- Ludlow in Italian Linen in Grey or Indigo – $382.20 ($546)
Looks like J. Crew is swinging for the warm weather fences on this one. It was 25% off a select batch of goods early on in the week, and now it’s 30% w/ GOSHOP. And a good chunk of their summer suits are up for the deal (they’re sold as separates, so scroll down on the jacket pages and you’ll see the pants). All of their sportcoats are getting the cut too. Hold on to your butts. And by butts, I mean your wallets. Especially if you’re getting married this summer, or in a wedding.
Bonobos: Spring Sale
The Picks: Slim or Straight Travel Jeans in N. Bay Blues – $58 ($98), Slim or Straight Travel Jeans in Steel – $78 ($98), Washed Chinos in “Pacifico” Straight Leg – $68 ($88)
Now if they’d just launch an extra % off sale code, and many of us would be set. Yes, those travel jeans are a little steep, but they’re pretty darn fantastic. Made in the USA from Cone Denim too. Thanks to everyone who sent in tips about this one.
Brooks Brothers: Spring Clearance + Extra 15% off Sitewide
- Knit Athletic Blazer – $101.32 ($298)
- Cotton Wool Crewneck – $76.16 ($128)
- Engineered Stripe Shawl Cardigan – $67.32 ($198)
- (for the more adventurous) Camo Blazer – $96.90 ($228)
The extra 15% off is part of their Golden Fleece foundation event. You get 15% off, and 10% of the purchase goes to their foundation that supports non-profits like Make-A-Wish. Might be some exclusions for the 15% off, but usually they let it fly for these types of promos. All picks above are already on clearance, so sizes are going to be a little spotty.
Lands’ End: 25% off Sitewide w/ SEASON & 2229
The Picks: Elston Single Pleat Wool Pants – $37.49 ($125), Oxford Club Collar Shirt – $18.74 ($58), 608 Slim Fit Linen Shorts – $14.99 ($54)
Usual exclusions (like Allen Edmonds) apply of course. Seems like Lands’ End has been excluding on-sale items from codes lately, but not this time. And y’know what? A lot of us wouldn’t shy away from a single pleat. They won’t look like the accordion Dockers that your Uncle Leo wears.
Rue La La: Ledbury Event
- “Worker” Blue Gingham Cotton Dress Shirt – $59.50 ($125)
- “Walker” Red Check Dress Shirt – $69.90 ($135)
- Blue Oxford – $59.90 ($125)
Ledbury shirts are. not. cheap. But, the cloth is exceptional, as is the construction, and the lowered second button makes em’ look fantastic when going tieless. Much of this sale is the regular fit option, but if you wear them under a blazer or suit jacket, you can probably forgo the extra investment on tailoring. Sizes are scattered, at best. Big thanks to Benjamin D. as well as Buddy N. for the heads up on this event.
Also worth a mention
- Huckberry: The flash-sale site still has a few Suitsupply summer suits on sale.
- Cole Haan: Extra 50% off clearance items (all are final sale) w/ EXTRA50
- Allen Edmonds: Their anniversary sale ends on Monday. Somebody hold reader & comments section reg. “diversification” back… you know he’s desperately trying not to order Mora 2.0s in every shade. EVERY SHADE DIVY BOY. EVERY SHADE.
How are those Bonobos Oxleys? Looking for a pair of lightweight, breathable pants for summer, and I’m deciding between those and the J Crew lightweight chino.
I received my first Ledbury shirt (got the denim one) 2 weeks ago. I absolutely love it. The slim fit works really well on me. In for 2 more casual Ledbury shirts. Thanks dappered!
I was thinking the same until I was introduced to Club Monaco’s lightweight chino. The construction is much better quality than J. Crew in my opinion. And the conner fit, modern slim, actually fit comfortably in the seat and thigh for a man who has legs (the curse of playing baseball) and wants the tapered leg.
I do not understand the obsession with J. Crew. Their stuff is extremely overpriced and made in China; if the label said Express or H&M, would you consider it of the same quality?
What’s more, everyone knows J. Crew Factory’s wares (as are most outlets) are specifically made for outletand are if even worse quality?
My phone cut this off, so I apologize for the double post. Everyone would be much better off by finding a good consignment store and paying for good tailoring; it will cost less than paying for this stuff! Don’t get sucked in by their marketing schemes.
J Crew’s their quality is solid, regardless of country of manufacture – head-and-shoulders above H&M or Express. Yes, the full retail price is ridiculous, but JC is one of those stores where you never *have* to pay full retail.
I’m curious, have you actually purchased anything recently from J Crew?
Overpriced? Of course. Most clothing retail prices are too high, which is why we rely on sites like Dappered. From above: “Dappered helps you work the retail system so that you can be comfortable, look sharp, and save money.” I would expect that not many people around here would pay full retail for J Crew items or most retail stores save a few that do not run promos. I don’t own anything from Express so I can’t really comment on their quality, but comparing H&M to J Crew seems like a stretch to me. Don’t get me wrong H&M has a purpose. I like to use their stuff as a test to see if I would enjoy wearing something, but most of the stuff I bought from them didn’t last much more than season.
As far as JCF, of course their stuff is made specifically for the outlets / factory stores. A significant portion of their items have it in the names ie “Factory Thompson Suiting.” I don’t think they are trying to fool anyone there. They do occasionally get some J Crew items in like the Ludlow in Navy Suit I got for $185 last month. 🙂
I agree with you comment on consignment stores to a point. On occasion you can find something amazing for next to nothing. However, I have found that unless you have the luxury of being in a big city you most likely do not have a lot of options for second hand stores.
Not everyone is a fan of second hand clothing bub.
Hey, thats my name! heh. Anyway I have 2 pair of the JCF lightweight chinos in narrow. Got them quite cheap ($25 each I think) They are quite nice for the price. I would assume the J Crew ones would be even better.
Someone is still mad that they lost their bracket and paycheck in Store Wars 2013 to the Crew!
@Frost: I hardly think you would refer to the mint-condition HSM blazer I found at Greene Street Consignment in Philadelphia for $25 this past weekend to be “second-hand.” Go ask any reputable tailor, consignment store retailer or Nordstrom employee about J. Crew’s construction quality. And, to answer the other poster’s question: I buy pocket squares from in their in-store clearance section all the time. For eight bucks.
Here’s the point: even their on-sale items are STILL overpriced. Why would you pay in the mid-300s for a made-in-China fused (they’re fused, not half-canvas; don’t argue this point) suit from J.Crew when you could pay the exact same for an HSM/Jack Victor/Abboud suit from Nordstrom Rack, all of which are of superior construction?
Heads up, got an email today from BR, 40%off today only, BRTAKE40
I get your point but your just been a lil too intense with it. J crew has some unique stuff and style. As a guy I get a little lazy so I don’t always want to go to too many stores and figure out fits. If I can find two three quality stores that I know how all their clothes fit then that is all I need cause I can just order online then
They have had that sale all week already…
Can I stack the 30 off jcrew with 15 new email also?
Had to jump on one of the Ledbury shirts. Rue La La has a terrible shipping policy though. Costs ten bucks and the estimated delivery date is more than two weeks away :/
Just an FYI: The Merona Tailored Fit Cotton Blazer is back in stock on Target’s website, all sizes and colors. Also their Ebay store
Tried on the Oxleys a little while ago. Fabric’s great, and very light. Fit can accommodate some leg. Haven’t tried the lightweight chino, but I’d put the Oxleys above the old Bowery slim I picked up from J Crew a few years back.
Camo blazer? Brooks Brothers, tailors to 39 American presidents . . . And Ted Nugent.
That Red Check pattern really seems to be making its way around. I bought one earlier this year and maybe I just started noticing them more, but I can easily see a time later this summer where I go to a bar and 30%-40% of the guys are wearing the same shirt. Hopefully it will then turn into some sort of spontaneous pop-up bar crawl.
I have the Oxley’s and they are the most comfortable pants I own, but still sharp enough to wear with a blazer. Love em.
I don’t mind the pleats but those Ellston pants have a lot going on – windowpane over herringbone pattern. That Brooks Brother’s sweater would be perfect for an Illinois fall football game, if I were an Illini fan, which I’m not. I’m not sure what they play at the University of Illinois these days qualifies as actual football.
I haven’t tried the oxleys, but I would like to dissuade you from trying the chambords. Chambray pants is just getting a bit on the weird side. I threw on a red polo with the blue chambords, and I looked like Frat Bro Mr. Rogers.
Actually, I just ordered a Mora 2.0 to try. And since you probably don’t believe me… proof (screenshot of the receipt)! http://imgur.com/cAp4R
I just accidentally’d 10 things for $200 at Lands’ End. Thanks Joe.
Just took the plunge on the Brooks Bros. blazer. I had been looking at the JCF summer blazers when they were on sale, but this is only a little bit more expensive (and about what JCF is selling them for now). LOVE the patch breast pocket. The description says brass buttons, but they look like horn to me.
The force is strong with this one. Welcome to the monk side.
I just picked up some Mora 2.0’s last week and I love them already.
I just used code BONOBOS_1010 for additional 20% and free shipping as a first time customer. I found it on retailmenot.com.
Any wisdom on the SuitSupply Havana suits? I don’t have a huge need for suits, but wouldn’t mind having a not super formal suit for whatever occasions I can find to wear one.
I was thinking the light brown houndstooth to fit the unstructured cut but thought that may be too much. But how does the blue work with the unstructured look?
I keep wanting something in that fit, since it’s unstructured and not as insanely slim as the Copenhagen apparently is, but I can’t get on board with the brown houndstooth – looks too close to white, so I feel like I’d have trouble finding occasions to wear it.
Not sure exactly what you mean about blue with the unstructured look, but if you mean this suit (http://us.suitsupply.com/en_US/suits/havana-blue-plain/P3554.html?start=2&q=havana), I think it’d be pretty easy to pull off. Basically just like you’re wearing navy chinos, and threw a jacket over the top – doesn’t have to be anything too difficult.
Ya, the picture makes it looks like an off-white or light gray, but in my opinion it seems like that almost fits the cut and look a bit better.
The rougher navy chino with jacket over it seems more incongruent to me, in my mind navy is more of a conservative color and goes better with a more formal look. That link you included somewhat confirms that for me, it looks oddly unstructured for the color.
I was thinking about going with the Copenhagen, but I don’t need a vest and for that price I can get whatever I want without a vest straight from SuitSupply.
I may try the light brown houndstooth and hope for the best – but “exchange” makes me nervous as I don’t really want $400 in credit at Huckberry.
Bravo 🙂
Ordered the BB Vintage Athletic Blazer and the birds eye cardigan in the sale section on tuesday. They should come in tomorrow!
I… I feel like you and @bjmcgeever:disqus didn’t actually click the link. Or did you? What is happening? I don’t understand! I NEED AN ADULT!!
I really want to pull the trigger on my first pair of travel jeans but can’t see myself wearing that color blue too often.
AND you just made a new verb! Get out of his way, HE’S ON FIYA!!
Oh, I clicked it. The bravo was for the misdirection.
Oh I clicked it. The bravo was for the misdirection 🙂
Speaking of the Mora 2.0s, I got a pair and they squeak/creak horribly. Worse than Chuckie from the Rugrats horribly. Anybody else experience this? Will this go away with wear? If they’re always going to be noisy I’d rather get a pair of bourbon McAllisters to rotate with my new Chili McAllisters (which are awesome).
I… still need an adult. This adult. http://i.imgur.com/Rgu0E2Ql.jpg
A flash brawl?
That orange and black crewneck is wandering close to Freddy Kruger territory. Just sayin’. 😉
If it helps me grow those freakin claws I’m in for 5 of those things.
I thought returns were Huckberry credit with free shipping, or refunded to your credit card and you pay return shipping?
I see your point on blue, but I take kinda the opposite view – blue is somewhat more formal than a really light color, but more importantly, it’s more conventional. A blue suit will stand out less in almost any environment than a light tan suit will. The more expected color gives you more room to play with the level of formality. That’s purely speculative, though.
+1 for HIMYM reference.
I’m still somewhat new to suits (I work in a professional, but uncharacterisitically informal, workplace), so I’m still working on my taste when it comes to less formal suiting. Blazers are still eluding me to a large degree – lots of “close but not right” choices.
I contacted Huckberry about the credit vs. refund issue, so if refund is possible I may just have to risk the price of shipping to see if the lighter color works out.
I’m with you, those pilgrim shoes are just wrong.
5th Q & A here: https://dappered.com/2014/01/charles-tyrwhitt-matching-metals-and-more-the-mailbag/
You might not like em’, but there’s a good reason plenty do.
I am aware they are popular in men’s style circles, but I honestly don’t get it.
Additionally, I’ve asked a good handful of people whose opinions matter more (read: women) and they were the ones who gave me the “pilgrim shoe” comment.
Edit: Even the same thought is in a Dappered article: https://dappered.com/2013/10/what-men-wear-vs-how-they-wear-it/
Just picked up that BB knit athletic blazer! Hopefully this will end my search for a casual warm-weather navy blazer.
I’m not able to select sleeve length size on the Rue La La site. Did you just order with the neck size?
Yea when did that Chili color come out? That’s sweet!
Yes. Their fit guide will tell you the sleeve length. I ordered the 15.5 which comes with a 34 inch sleeve. Just about perfect for me.
purchased the brooks brothers vintage knit blazer last year. nice slim and casual fit. wore it this past weekend in southern california 70-75 degree weather all day long. very satisfied for the price.
How can I tell what’s included in the 30% off select styles on J. Crew’s site? Isn’t there usually a link that has all the items on sale, so I don’t have to go through every category of interest to find what’s marked down? I started in the suit section and they don’t even show prices till you click one of the suits!
(Sorry if this is a double post… it seemed like the first one got stuck.)
Felt the same, but apparently they are more “muted” in person. Ordered it and we’ll see, either way returns are free.
Mora 2.0’s are probably my favorite shoes atm, creaking def does decrease.
I believe they hit the stores a few weeks ago — when I went in to buy them the sales rep said they hadn’t even received any stock yet. That said, they were webgems/online exclusives at some point, so they’ve been around before.
I tried to get a good picture of them but I can’t manage to get the color right. Oh well.
I have that suit (the blue Havana, not the Copenhagen) and it’s incredible–super thin and light fabric so great for summer and the color is light enough that it doesn’t look incongruous with the informal cut. I’ve probably gotten more compliments on it than on any other piece of clothing I own. The cut of the Havana is really nice imo
I hope one day jcrew will allow a code to work on those Ludlow tuxedos.
Yeah, this sale is pretty tricky, usually clicking their link will take
you to whatever their selected items are. I’ve noticed some of the
featured items are on sale, such as most of the stuff in their cheat
sheet list and a few things on the now list. Also, if you go to the
Ludlow shop store page they mark the suits on sale.
The boat is on FIYA!
Right. Fully understand why some guys don’t like em’, but, was trying to point you to why some do. Even if you don’t like something, sometimes it’s valuable to observe the “whys” of the other side.
Little Vaseline on the tongue (the shoe’s, not yours) will help until they break in a bit more.
Maybe instead of Vaseline it would be better to use a leather conditioner or wax or something that’s intentionally designed for leather and would also help lubricate? Then again, per @disqus_LdBCNoU2dQ:disqus’s comment, you could just wait it out.
I tried Leather Honey to no avail so I cut to the chase, but I was also operating on inexpensive shoes. It’s not a half bad idea to exhaust your shoe/leather-specific options first.
Looks great! Perfect dress-down blazer for the summer.
Just got mine last week and they do the same. My guess is that it will decrease significantly with time, once the leather breaks in and softens.
Did you size-up? I was a 38 in Lazio and another cut or two that I tried on, but they weren’t super roomy. If the Copenhagen is much slimmer, I may have to size-up.
Also, how chopped is the jacket? That’s one of my bigger concerns.
I can’t speak to the Copenhagen, but I wear a 38L in the Napoli (like you, not super roomy) and a 40R in the Havana (also 40R for JCF, Brooks Brothers, etc if that helps). I’d say the jacket’s maybe 1-2 inches shorter on the Havana than the Napoli–definitely a little less formal but not egregiously short. If you live/work somewhere where people wear less formal clothing in summer you could probably wear it to work I’d guess.
Just make sure you bring your serf bort.
Jokes aside I think your comment and the ‘gaga’ remark by @SuitandTiewithNoPants:disqus’s girlfriend are quite valuable. Regardless of whether one cares about what other people think, it can be helpful to know what type of criticism you might be met with when trying out new looks; at worst it gives you a chance to figure out how you’ll respond ahead of time.
