B.R. Tailored Fit Cotton “Sateen” blazer – $83.99 w/ BRSPRING40 ($198)
Huge thanks to Jason B. for sending in the style tip on this one.
UPDATE: These went back up to full price last (Monday) night.
A couple years ago Banana Republic started to exclude blazers from their daily codes.
Banana Republic blazers also rarely hit the sale section with plenty of sizes left.
So it’s worth pointing out that the extra 40% off sale items code BRSPRING40 is currently working on their already on-sale, smooth cotton, not shiny, “sateen” tailored-fit navy blazer.
Size shown: 38R on an average frame. As good as it gets for under $100.
This is NOT a rumpled chino blazer. It’s smooth and sharp enough to wear to work, and polished enough for a date. Looks terrific with jeans, or, wear it with off-white jeans the first day it cracks 70 degrees. Lapels, button stance, and drop in the jacket tail are timeless (so it’s a nice alternative to those who aren’t a fan of J. Crew’s slim lapels and shorter jacket). The one drawback = the sleeve buttons are functional. So if you have short arms, know that tailoring will be a pain.
It is fused of course, but it moves pretty well. Their “Tailored-Fit” seems to fit pretty true. It’s neither super slim nor boxy. Armholes run a little low, but at this price that’s not too big an issue. Buttons are decent quality. It is fully lined, so it won’t be super breezy in the heat, but at least it’s not completely lined in polyester (back & sleeves are poly, front is an acetate rayon blend). Ships free since it’s over $50 and returns are free too.
…and an extra 10% off with BRCARDSALE (if you’re a cardholder)
Ah! Thanks Joe and Jason! I just bought my first casual/semicasual blazer. Can’t wait until I can start playing with all of the different possible outfits.
Very low risk, high chance of reward…ordered.
And as a bonus, it DOES have functional buttonholes for me.
I wonder if they have changed the cut of these blazers since you first tried it on, Joe. I purchased one of these online a couple of weeks ago. When it arrived, I had a limited range of arm movement available. If I tried to lift my arm, like you are doing to take the photo, the jacket would ride high up my back. Definitely failed the hug test so I ended up returning it and another tailored-fit cotton blazer with the same issue.
I ordered some pants on this sale and noticed that BR changed their shipping to Free 2-3 days after $25.
Didn’t noticed that. Darn could have saved an extra $3 on my order.
Awesome. Thanks for the tip Aaron. I would have missed that one without your head’s up.
Call BR CS and they’ll adjust it.
Thanks! Managed to pick one up for $15.59 after stacking 40% + 10% + $60 in rewards i’ve had laying around for months!
I’ve got a BR across the street from my office. I’m going to head down there and see what I can see. I’ve had mixed results with sizing when ordering jackets online.
Wow, yeah … netted out to $50.59 after promos and $25 in certificates. Heck of a deal … especially if I can return it if it doesn’t fit right. And they had Longs in both 46 and 48!
Really wished they carried it in a 38L. Anyone know the length difference between regular and long for BR?
The coupon codes don’t apply to the same blazer in red or in brighter blue, and they don’t apply to the Chambray Blazer ($149.00) online as well. I called and spoke with a customer service representative and they were awesome to apply the BRSPRING40 40% off on the chambray blazer!
Total came out to be around $89. So if you’d like to get one of those summer time jackets, give them a call!
UPDATE: So I usually buy jackets in 40R, but this fit me best as a 42S. However, it’s a great fit that won’t require futzing with tailoring the surgeon’s cuffs.
It’s a shame that they aren’t offering this blazer in the newer Modern Slim Fit. Skinny/Slim guys probably will find that the Tailored Fit BR blazers won’t work for them.
EDIT: Joe, you note that the jacket tail is ‘timeless’, but the pictures on the website make it look like it’d fail the finger-curl test by a good margin. Not saying that means it’s bad, but I don’t typically think of blazers with significant cropping as timeless. Are the pictures on the website not accurate?
Same here. I’m pulling in that thing for $17 after stacking and finally using rewards that were about to expire.
Anyone know the where the shirt in the top picture is from (with the blue and white placket detail)?
It’s no longer working, unless I am missing something.
I already have a Ludlow navy blazer, but I’m totally jumping on this. The only question is should I get navy again (more versatile, also more boring) or go for broke and get the nautical blue?
I can’t say for sure, but the couple of times I’ve gone to BR in person the 42 Regular in various cuts is a little short in the sleeves for me. But when I order the Long online and get it through the mail, I’ve been happy with the length.
You might be taking too much of a gamble if you wear a Long and they don’t have one for you. Of course with free shipping, you could just return it to the store and it shouldn’t cost you anything. But then you might be tempted to keep something that doesn’t really fit (one of the worst things to do in my opinion). It’s hard to say, but that’s my 2-cents.
Wondering the same thing! Anyone know?
These sales are really testing my self control with my wallet…
Thanks on this & to others who pointed out that this should work for other blazers. I got one I ordered adjusted. With the 40% and 10% it’s down to $80.46. I have this blazer and it’s awesome.
One thing to note, though – it says Modern Slim Fit on the website, but when you get it, it is tagged as Tailored Fit, and I believe that’s probably accurate. It’s TF not just on external tags, but also the sewed-in tags. For those who might think MSF would be too slim, there you go.
Functional kills it for me!
Out of 38R already. What a bummer, I’ve been needing a replacement for awhile
Thanks Joe. Just ordered one myself. Its my first cotton blazer. I recently bought their tailored fit suit and love the fit.
I haven’t spent a single penny yet this (calendar) year on clothing, but this might break that run. I’ve been eyeing this blazer since it was first introduced/discussed here, and I already have three of their TF blazers, and two of their TF suits. They fit me really nicely, straight OTR. We’ll see if I break down or not. That’s a solid price for sure.
Sweet, new to the site, and being a visitor JUST paid dividends =) ty Jason B and Joe for sharing
Edit: DONT forget if you have a discover card you should go through shop discover. Even though this is a promotion, they sometimes still give you %5 CB
Sweet. Picked up my 36R. Been looking for my first navy blazer but didn’t wanna spend an arm and a leg. Thanks, Joe!
Yes, thank you Gary and M. I called and the guy actually told me the reason it wasn’t taking off the 40% was the prices had to end in .99 for it to apply. I said no worries, but that I was reading online where other people were saying they were able to get the discount. He said no problem and that he could do it retroactively once I placed an order. Only things they couldn’t change were the shipping address, shipping method, and credit card once you placed your order.
tl;dr – thanks to everyone’s helpful comments I’m out $94.77…but hopefully gained a sweet summer blazer
I believe it’s a BR shirt. I have several BR shirts with similar placket details (wearing one now, in fact). It’s a really nice touch.
Anyone brave enough to get that in red?
Went to a brick and mortar to try it on–shoulders way too tight in the 38R, but the 40R looks goofily big on me. Anyone else have this problem? (I’m 5’11, 155.)
Yep, did just that and they took care of it. Literally a 3min phone call. They have always great customer service, at least whenever I have called.
I posted pictures of this blazer on the “outfit fit” thread on this forum. I couldn’t raise my arms in the 40L so I went with a 42L and it fits pretty good. I’m going to shorten the sleeves a bit and take in the sides – it’s a pretty slick blazer, very versatile.
they don’t have jackets in size 34 ):
Finally bought my first navy blazer because of this post (actually my first ever purcahse based off of Dappered). Bought it in person (had to haggle because it wouldn’t work in store, showed them checkout on my phone). The shoulders/chest seem to run small/narrow on these so I had to go with 40R rather than 38R (though I am probably in the middle). Good enough where I probably won’t need to tailor it outside of maybe shaving 1/2″ off the cuffs (which shouldn’t effect the functional button holes). I’m in between losing weight/building muscle so I’m not concerned with a 100% fit at this price, just a cool blazer to rock for a few years while I body build.
Add me to the long list of folks who are now $88.45 lighter…. Hmmm. And considering I sprang for those Wolverine Winchesters last week, I need to stop visiting this site so often. I’m going to be broke, but well dressed.
Pretty sure it’s low slung jeans and models with long arms. If you look closely (yes, CLOSELY) at my crotch (AT MY CROTCH) in the main pic in the post, you can see that it covers most if not all of it. Most of my arse in fact. Full honesty: I did not do the finger curl test in the fitting room because it didn’t look anywhere close to short/chopped.
To me.
And again, with emphasis… CROTCH.
I’ve been a reader of this site for about a year and decided to pull the trigger on my first casual blazer. Thanks Joe!
P.S. I got the 38S (I have the same measurements as you, but I’m mostly leg). Hope it works out after a little tailoring.
Well I bought in-store today so I can say I this… It is marginally shorter than usual, but not significantly so. Like maybe an inch or two. I also get an “S” whereas I usually get an “R” because I was more concerned about arm length than jacket length. It covers most of my butt, but it’s still a tad shorter than other jackets I own. That all being said…
1.) I don’t buy trendy stuff, but I didn’t hesitate to buy this jacket.
2.) If this jacket were regular (full) length, I’m not sure it would even look as good. After all, it’s a casual jacket – albeit a very polished casual jacket, but still a casual jacket.
So Cliffs Notes version… tad bit shorter… not significant (IMO)… still looks good…
I had to size up and went from “R” to “S”, but that did the trick for me.
I was at work so I missed this, but I did end up calling and placing an order. I actually called twice. The first time they told me they were out of the 38R. So I called back (trust issues, lol) and I actually had the last one in my cart. Got it! 9 day shipping though.
I had this same problem too. It’s a shame because I really wanted to like it but those arm holes are too low for me. It’s weird though because I tried on a different tailored fit coat, from one of their suits, and it fit perfectly.
I also bought in person and had the same issues.
FYI just tried to get the deal on the nautical blue, didn’t work online, called in and was told it’s only good for prices ending in .99. They did offer a 20% courtesy but that wasn’t enough to swing me.
Let me cosign: I had the exact same problem. Couldn’t remotely lift my arms up properly.
same here, except I didn’t even get offered a 20% courtesy… i’ll have to pass i guess.

Thanks for the additional info. I’m glad to hear that at least BR is keeping their jacket tails at a reasonable length. I’m getting quite tired of the ultra cropped stuff that seems to still be spreading.
And now BR had removed pretty much all its price reductions, particularly those covering suits and blazers.
I’m somewhere between irritated and relieved. I was contemplating using my 40% code on a Monogram suit in grey pinpoint at $439, but not at $648.
Wanted to xheck the fabric and cut in-store before buying, but hasn’t gotten out to the one BR in my area with a full suit selection. As a Canadian, returns aren’t free. At a minimum I lose 5% on exchange fees. Adds up on a suit when US1 ~ CA1.15.
Same here. I’m returning. The arm holes seemed sufficiently high, but the span in the back was not long enough causing a failure of the hug test by a large margin. I also had the same problem with a linen tailored-fit blazer.
It’s amazing to me that this isn’t fully lined in rayon/acetate. What would be the cost difference between that and the partially polyester lining? Any summer blazer (i.e. cotton or linen) that is lined with any polyester is instantly moved to my Do Not Buy list. I was very happy to see that Club Monaco has finally moved to completely breathable linings, and am shocked that BR hasn’t done the same. Even H&M has several of their suits fully lined with acetate!
Dang. Can’t do teh working buttonholes. Because I prefer to show some linen. And prefer not to look like a clown if I go with a polo instead.
Damn my freakishly large shoulders. I have a 42L on the way, but I bet it’s going to need a lot of tailoring in the waist department… I just hope the sleeves don’t need too much trimming.
I respect the effort to save $3. You are a shining totem of frugality. Teach me.
You can look in the “how does this fit?” thread on the forum here to see how my 42L fit on me. I’m 6ft 160 with huge shoulders too. it’s definitely gonna need some tailoring.
Ha! It actually worked out a little bit better since they took the additional 10% off the regular price instead of the sale price. So I saved an additional $6, woohoo.
At 6’2″ 210lbs I’ll have to see what happens. I went with a 44L on my last coat to accommodate my large chest, but it needs some serious tailoring. The shoulders are good, but I still need to take the waist in at least 3″. Based on your pictures this may fit me fairly well off the rack, especially given my bulkier frame. Thanks for the information.
how do you think it fit me? Keep in mind im only 160..it doesn’t seem logical that I would fit in this thing…..just curious.
Huh. The blazer is no longer on sale but they still have the 40% deal going. Weird. We’re they getting too many orders and had to bump it off the sale list?
The sleeves are a bit long, but other than that it looks good… which gives me hope. While I would expect it to look a bit bigger on you, it’s hard to go by weight.
If possible, try it on in store first, the armholes are kind of weird and restrictive for some. I think the price went back up too (website says $200).. I might actually sell mine if my tailor think it’s gonna be too much work with the sleeves (functional buttons).
FYI I didn’t have a chance to call before Monday night and get the sale price, but I’ve had the shopping cart open since first seeing this post. I called just now and explained it and they gave me the sale price and 40% off deal. No arguing at all, it was great.
to note: I have the exact same problem with the new Ludlow cotton sport coat that’s on sale this week. It fits fine in the chest, sleeves and shoulders but the construction makes it impossible for me to raise my arms. Quite bizarre.
Sign me up for squirrel flaps as well. It looks like I’m going to be returning the coat this weekend…
I got mine on sale, but will be returning it. The fit was pretty solid and I really liked the overall look and feel, but the armholes are ridiculously low — I fail the handshake test.
yup, you are not alone. Their other blazers don’t seem to have this issue.
Update: bummer. Sized up just in case Tailored meant really small. That was a great idea. However, despite nailing the size, the arm holes are way too low, and the chest was oddly-cut. Really quite awkward and cumbersome.
