Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
Barneys Warehouse: End of Year Extra 50% off FINAL Sale
- Barneys New York Quilted Jacket – $129.50 ($495)
- Barneys Made In Italy Two-Eyed Chukka in tan suede or grey suede – $69.50 ($275)
- Bric’s 21″ Rolling Carry On Duffel – $104.50 ($425)
- Connor Wild West Stationery Set – $25.20 ($100)
- Ray Ban Clubmasters – $72.50 ($145)
- Barneys Micro Pattern Tie – $39.50 ($145)
No returns here, but those Two-Eyed Chukkas are at a pretty fantastic price. Also, these grey suedes from yesterday’s post are still kicking around in plenty of sizes. Looks like they’re offering free shipping no minimum at post time.
Ledbury: 25% off all shirts & free 2-3 day express shipping
The Pick: Slim Fit Fine Blue Twill – $82.25 ($115)
Ledbury is NOT cheap… but they make some fantastic shirts. And their second button is lowered just a bit. Hits that sweet spot if you’re going tieless. A warning: Sleeves run long, and they do ding you $10 to shorten them. Kinda stinks, but, the Blue Fine Twill is outstanding. Made in Poland. Nice of them to kick in the expedited shipping.
J. Crew: 30% off reg. 40% off Sale & Free Ship. w/ GIFTNOW
The Picks: Velvet Peak Tux-Style Blazer – $184.80 ($328), Cashmere Crew – $89.99 ($225), Broadmoor quilted vest – $59.99 ($138), Slim Merino V- Neck – $43.80 – $35.99 ($78), Slim Flannel Manjamas – $41.70 ($79.50), Grey English Tweed Blazer – $166.80 ($348)
Anyone else getting/have had for weeks J. Crew sale fatigue? What’s gonna happen when they get into the new year and don’t run sales all the time? Maybe they’ll just keep on keepin’ on, but it feels like this extended 30% off site wide thing has been a during-the-holidays-only kinda deal. (UPDATE: They bumped this to 40% off sale items overnight, all picks above are sale, and those are some awfully good prices) And you’d expect at least a handful of new arrivals (blazers perhaps?) to start trickling in after the new year. Speaking of, that velvet peak lapel is quite the evening jacket for a New Year’s Eve. Still wish these hadn’t sold out so fast. The free shipping no minimum offer ends today, 12/19/13, so… last chance (for awhile, one would think) to pickup a slim sweater (especially at 40% off) and get it delivered for free since there’s no threshold right now. Also, for those who have a tradition of gifting new pajamas on Christmas Eve… there’s these.
Johnston & Murphy: Winter Sale
The picks: Tyndall Cap Toe – $129.99 ($198), Tyndall Chelsea – $129.99 ($198), Goodyear Welted Hutchins Cap Toe Boot – $199.99 ($295), Goodyear Welted Hutchinsn Wingtip Boot – $199.99 ($295)
The Tyndall Cap Toe and Chelsea have gone for less, but $130 seems like a fair price. Also worth a good strong look are the Goodyear Welted options, now just under $200. Water resistant Chocolate Suede? Nice.
Bonobos: 30% off Sale w/ SNOWEDIN
- Washed Chino Blazer in Burgundy – $75.60 ($198)
- Fleetwood Shawl Collar in Navy or Green – $47.60 ($98)
- Washed Chino Blazer in Forrest Green – $75.60 ($198)
- Nottingham Navy Tweed Blazer – $138.60 ($368)
Sometimes Bonobos runs extra % off their sale section events and there’s not a lot to choose from. Doesn’t seem to be the case this time. Certainly worth browsing if you’re a Bonobosite. Bonobosian? Anyway, yeah, as many have pointed out, their chino blazers sure look pretty chopped, but at this price, with their easy returns, might be worth a shot.
THE REMINDER Nordstrom’s Half-Yearly Launches 12/26
Just a heads up. Nordstrom’s next Half-Yearly sale for Men launches on the day after Christmas. Expect a run-down w/ picks here ASAP on 12/26. Nordstrom just doesn’t do sales that often. It’s not as good as their annual Anniversary Sale. The Half-Yearly’s are more of a clearance event, but they’re almost always stacked with more than a few good options. Plus, it’s Nordstrom, so everything ships and returns free.
THE SUGGESTION: Tiffany Sterling Knot Pendant – $125.00
If you’re struggling, badly, to come up with something sparkly for the woman in your life… and you’re on a bit of a budget but can go more than a hundred bucks, then strongly consider this. Lots of bang-for-the-buck here. Impeccable style. Not too dressy, but dressy. And it’s Tiffany, so, there’s that. Just be careful. If she might be expecting a ring of some sort this year, any piece of jewelry NOT of that type could be a disappointment.
Also worth a mention
- Club Monaco: They’re running a spend to save sale with pretty high thresholds: Spend $200 get $50, Spend $300 get $75, Spend $400 get $125 w/ code SPEND2SAVE. Might be worth taking a spin through their “Brands we love” section.
- Express: 50% off… everything. The entire site.
- Ralph Lauren: Extra 25% off Select Sale Items, prices are as shown on the site.
- Cole Haan: Extra 30% off sale items w/ NEWYEAR
- J. Crew Factory: Their site is 50% off and clearance is an extra 25% off w/ SALE25
- Jack Spade: 25% off all Bags & Wallets w/ 25BAGS
I’m sure folks have noticed by now, but J.crew seems to have upgraded their existing code with 40% off of sales items while keeping the same features -30% off the full-priced and free shipping for all orders. So for instance, you get $89.99 instead of $104.99 at the checkout automatically.
Quite tempting on the harvest light brown sportcoat on sale. Must I buy another sportcoat? Geez. I mean I don’t have a brown sportcoat, but grrr. Somehow I feel like I could STILL do better than $167.99 and I kinda wish it had a bit darker tone. I guess I can afford to be picky since I have too many sportcoats.
I got my wife that Sterling knot necklace last V-day. She loved it. And then she found matching earrings for it (minus the Tiffany logo) on Ebay for $11. And I mean identical earrings with the same design, width of links, etc. Amazing how much they charge for that Tiffany logo.
Agreed, I’m happy for the deals but nervous about what it says for J Crew as a retailer. Really wish they’d have a promo that would hit the standard ludlow suiting. I’m dying for a new suit prior to new years’ eve but 600$ for something I’m 100% going to spill champagne on is a bit rich for my blood.
Scooped a slim merino v neck from jcf this morning for 23.99 in clearance. Not much for sizing left but that is probably the best price we will see for those sweaters.
Damn you J Crew!! I’ve been waiting on those slim vee elbow patch sweaters to hit as low as they did in the beginning of the summer, and today J Crew decided it wanted my money and made it happen.
Those Barney’s chukka’s are reeeeaaallly tempting. Anybody have an idea on how true to size they are? It’s probably better if you not tell me, honestly.
I’m with you on the brown sportcoat. I’ve been looking at that for a while. I know I don’t “need” it, but I sure would look good in it.
Updated above. The 40% off sale is about as good as I’ve seen it on basics (like the slim Vs) in awhile. Yeah, seems like they’re really trying to make hay here at the end of the year.
The Rayban Clubmasters appear to be in stock, but you are not able to add them to your cart. I was really excited to pick up a pair of those….darn.
Updated above. Good catch with the shift to 40% off overnight. Thanks Dappa!
I just had the same experience.
so for the club monaco tiered sale, if i purchased $400 worth of stuff and returned $150 of it, would my item still get the same percentage on the sale? trying to cop the rancourt mocs
Joe, when you say the sleeves run long on Ledbury, do they actually run longer than the advertised, or do you mean that the neck-sleeve length combinations they offer, while true to size, are generally pretty long?
The latter.
Dear santa, i would like the OSB trail oxfords to be on sale at nordstrom. thank you.
Thanks. I was hoping for the former, orangutan arms be damned.
Skiff Jacket at J. Crew is $178 – 40% makes it $106.
If you’ve given a Nordstrom’s salesman your card, you should have gotten an email from him by now offering to set stuff aside for you before the sale starts. If you didn’t, you should go by the store and kick his butt.
Food for thought for those doling out rings this holiday season: legally speaking, if you propose to someone on/around/during Christmas, the ring is considered a gift. What this effectively means is that should your fiance get cold feet or for some other reason bail on the engagement down the road, she’s under no obligation to return the ring, other than the fact that not doing so makes her a terrible person.
“Surely this doesn’t happen!” you say. I know; sounds horrible. If I weren’t able to think of more than one specific example (some involving rings north of $10k) I’d react the same way.
And the design. Just because it can be knocked off cheaply doesn’t mean it’s cheap.
Definitely worth doing and no sweat off their backs. Not only do the salesmen want to be the ones to sell the products, but they’d also like an excuse to be ‘your guy’ and Nordstroms when you come in. If I had my eye on anything at Nordstroms I’d be doing this
You think Tiffany came up with the design? I think it’s the opposite. The ‘knot’ does not have a tiffany logo anywhere on it. They took a design that’s out there and added their logo on the chain and put it in a blue box. Guess there’s no way to know for sure.
I think it’s odd how some people balk at the cost of name brand jewelry, but won’t bat an eye for high quality, name brand clothing/shoes.
You would think strip mining the earth for rare metals, refining the materials, and forging/creating the jewelry is a tough cost to bear. Consider a pair of leather shoes probably took two cows, some oil, some thread, and some workers in a factory. $100 necklace < $400 shoes.
The washed chino blazer in forest green that I ordered a few weeks ago came in. Around half of my backside on my ~six foot frame is covered, so it is a little cropped as feared.
This would be of little concern to shorter fellows if it were not for the overly long sleeves that seem to plague every off-the-rack blazer. The ends of the sleeves are not stitched together- they can be lazily tucked in, but, more presumably, they allow for easier tailoring.
Furthermore, the left lapel obscures the top button when buttoned and there is still shoulder padding, despite the blazer being unlined. The color is also a bit darker in-person when compared to online.
However, the fabric feels great and the waist is fairly tapered. The blazer should be able hold its own in casual settings.
FOR SALE:
I have a brand new, tags-still-on, still-in-shipping-plastic J. Crew Factory Thompson black velvet sportcoat 40R for sale. They shipped me two by mistake. It fits, feels, and looks great. I look forward to wearing it on NYE. I wanted to offer it to the Dappered readers before selling it elsewhere. Here’s a link to the J. Crew Factory website where I initially purchased it: http://factory.jcrew.com/mens-clothing/jackets_outerwear/sportcoats/PRDOVR~06423/06423.jsp
Its price online is $99, but I will take $50. Please respond here or at jtdurm@gmail.com.
I didn’t say anything negative about the necklace besides the fact that matching earrings can be found online at 10% of the cost. I think it’s odd how dappered readers look for bargains on clothes or shoes but when someone presents them with a deal on jewelry, they take it as a negative. It’s all guys here so I’m sure none of us are aware of the markup on jewelry. I know I wasn’t until my wife started educating me on it. Let’s just say it’s ALOT!
Man, looks like J.Crew might be getting some of my money. And for those interested in the MacAllister Chukkas Joe mentioned yesterday, they are down to 76.80.

J.Crew Abingdon Sporting Duffel in Navy is @ $107 now with code. Tempting.

Thanks for the heads up. I bought the Olive one with Thinsulate, which is even cheaper. Looks pretty warm!
The problem with jewelry is in theory Sterling Silver should be sterling silver anywhere. Tiffany you pay for the brand. It would be more like saying you prefer to shop for Ralph Lauren merino wool sweaters and don’t look around to see if you can get the same product elsewhere for a more reasonable price. That being said, if in need of a gift, it is hard to go wrong with Tiffany. The quality is reasonable. Around 100 is not all that expensive. The blue box always gets a nice reaction. All that being said, its probably a $50 necklace at best.
Totally agree – jewelry markup is huge, but the same could be said for lots of other things. Jewelry is, typically, a luxury item.
I’m all for bargains when you’re comparing apples to apples, but you can’t say that those earrings are the same thing because they’re not. They’re not Tiffany. They’re not from the same craftsmen/factory. That’s like comparing Nikes (made in thailand) to New Balance (made in Boston) because they’re both shoes.
In theory, yes. However, when you pay a premium for a brand name, you’re typically also paying for a higher quality item. The materials and craftsmanship in that RL merino sweater is probably better than one from Target.
I agree – that’s probably a $50 necklace (their cost) which gets marked up. And because it’s Tiffany, there’s never a sale.
I’ve held them both in my hand. If you take the knot off the chain, you can’t tell the difference. It’s possible the silver could be higher quality on the Tiffanys, I really couldn’t say. But as far as looks, they are identical.
I am starting to like the semi-chopped casual blazer. In this day and age it gives a dressed up casual feel without feeling over dressed. Wear to a good local dinner. Doesn’t feel too stuffy but still puts you ahead of the crowd.
Well I’ve got two things to say…
1.) Tiffany most certainly raises the prices on their goods because of the name. High-ticket items such as engagement rings are going to cost hundreds (if not thousands) more at Tiffany compared to other retailers for what is essentially the same product.
2.) However, for small ticket items, there’s something special about having that Tiffany name on it. This is particularly true for gifts. That Tiffany box will make a girl swoon, no matter what’s inside.
Totally. That’s what replicas are – counterfeit designs without the brand name to get sued over. 😛
Not knocking cheap jewelry (I bought my GF some cheap stuff on Etsy), but there’s a reason Tiffany charges so much.
#2 is most definitely true. She was more excited about the blue box than what was in it.
also, the Wallace & Barnes blanket-lined work jacket is $120 and the Wallace & Barnes CPO jacket is $72
Think I can convince J. Crew to make me that skiff jacket with tall-XL sleeves and a medium chest/waist? I’ve been eyeing that jacket for a while now…
Ha! That would have been awesome. I still might buy something, but if they had snuck that in there (for whatever reason), I’d *have* to make a purchase.
Ha! So many times I’m tempted to pick up the phone and ask an OTR company if they’ll make, say, a shirt just a little slimmer in the sleeves for me, or a coat with an extra feature, and then I have to remind myself sadly that I’m one of the masses…for now…
Oh lordy, I want that CPO jacket..$72 is that awkward price where I’m still a bit too broke after my Christmas shopping, but it’s a bit too good of a deal to pass up…
