Red Wings under $200, Stafford’s big win, & more – The Thurs. Handful

November 7, 2013 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

Piperlime: 30% off Mens w/ WARMUP + Extra 15% off w/ SILVER13

Piperlime Picks

The Picks: Timex Intelligent Quartz Black on Black – $98.18 ($165), Jack Spade Work Twill Brief – $173.74 ($365), Red Wing 6 Inch Round – $172.55 ($290), Woolrich North Spur Quilted Jacket – $100.55 ($169)

Major hat tip to Serge P. in the comments over here for the tip. The codes, at post time, were in fact stacking. Solid all around. Plus, it’s Piperlime, so everything ships pretty fast and returns free.

UPDATE: The codes aren’t stacking for most anymore. Might as well give it a shot though. Prices are still decent at “just” 30% off . Puts the Red Wings at $203.

UPDATE II: Looks like you need a GAP/BR/ON card for the SILVER13 code to work…

JC Penney: “Biggest Sale” + Extra 20% off w/ PINECONE

JCP sportcoats

The Picks: Stafford Camel Hair Blazer – $63.99 ($200)  Claiborne Cord Blazer – $38.39 ($80),  Stafford Herringbone & Leather Gloves – $14.39 ($30)

Biggest? When every sale is a “BIG SALE!!!!!!!” and they’re having sales all the time, it can be tough to tell when one is a step above the other. But a $10 off $25 in store voucher isn’t half bad, and the online prices are pretty solid for this one. UPDATE: They just launched a 20% off up to $150 code, PINECONE, this morning. Thanks to Jeff in the comments.

ABOUT THAT CAMEL HAIR BLAZER… Good Grief. It’s outstanding for the price. It says “classic fit”, but it’s nicely contoured at the sides (size shown: 38R), the sleeves are decently trim in diameter, and while the sleeves run a little long, the button holes are non functioning. The fabric is terrific. Some texture and super soft.Dual vents. The interior is all poly and slightly stiff, but it moves well enough. Arm holes are okay. Could be higher. Shoulder pads could be a little thinner, but they ain’t awful. Made in Mexico. The navy looks incredible. Absolutely worth a good long look. This was a major surprise. Stafford + “classic fit” usually = disaster. Not here.

GILT: Watches Featuring J. Springs

j springs autos

The Picks: Automatic w/ black, blue, or white dial – $135.00

J. Springs is a division of Seiko, and the brand just isn’t all that well known here in the states. BUT… they make solid watches at affordable prices, with dependable Japanese automatic movements inside. If you’re looking for a simple, affordable, but still interesting casual watch with an automatic movement, that blue dial would be tough to beat. Some of these are listed as 42mm in diameter, some 44mm, so, seems to be some confusion there. Exhibition caseback. And since this is GILT, know that it doesn’t look like you can send these back (since they’re “non-sized”) even for credits.

Brooks Brothers: Free Shipping No Minimum

Striped City for Handful

The Picks: Striped Belt in Green & Burgundy, or Grey & Navy – $48.00, Money Clip – $38.00

Shipping at Brooks Brothers can be a total dealbreaker. But through this weekend they’re offering free shipping on all purchases. No minimum. Might be time to check out something small. Also, all outerwear is 25% off through 11/11.

For Her: Nordstrom’s Half-Yearly Sale for Women

Half Yearly Women

Y’know what was playing over the P.A. in JC Penney when I went to go checkout the camel hair sportcoat? Jingle Bells. Cripes. Little early for The Little Drummer Boy to be making an appearance at the mall, but the holidays are fast approaching. If you’ve got a lady on your list, now might be the time to start looking. We turned to the ladies over at The Pretty Guinea Pig (which evolved from our female-friendly site, FullClutch, and will carry on henceforth with a more eclectic spin) for some gift worthy picks. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Colorblock Woven Cashmere Scarf – $65.98 ($88)
TPGP Analysis: Even if the colorblock trend were to end tomorrow, this scarf is pretty timeless. Plus, it’s cashmere; bonus in the mind of a female.
  • Kate Spade Wallet in Black – $58.80 ($98)
TPGP Analysis: Kate is Jack’s better half, and just like Jack, the designs are all about putting a fun spin on a classic style. The debossed dots on this wallet present a classy pattern, and there’s plenty of room inside for all her essentials. But stick with the black. The gold option is gauche. Slip a few tickets to a show inside her new wallet as an extra treat. Remember, experiences are better than things!
  • “Thrifty Style” Book – $13.17 ($21.95)
TPGP Analysis: For the creative girl with a lot of style. This book gives tips on re-working clothes already in her closet to make something new, ala Andie and her prom dress in Pretty in Pink (forgive the awful video).
  • Knob Wine Stopper – $20.40 ($34.00)
TPGP Analysis:  If your girl likes wine like I like wine, she’ll appreciate this retro wine stopper in her stocking on Christmas morning. Made from a vintage door knob by Kitchen Papers by Cake, right here in the USA.
  • Dogeared Gold-dipped Ball Chain Necklace – $40.98 ($82)
If you have a lady in your life that likes to wear gold, this is a perfect chain for layering. She can also add a charm or pendant if desired. Not sure about length? It’s 24″ long, see that length on this chart here.

Also worth a mention

  • J. Crew: Another minimum spend code: 25% off $100 w/ GOSHOP. Usually these things are for $125+ or $150+. So $100 is nice. Drops that velvet shawl collar blazer to $216.
  • DSW: A new tiered code for email club members. GIMMESHOES = $10 off $74, $25 off $139, and $40 off $199. Don’t forget to use SHIPR for free shipping. AND… it looks like Mercanti Fiorentini just released a new double monk, minus the chisel toe. $124.95 with the code.
  • J. Crew Factory: 30% off everything with BIGSALE. Drops their herringbone sportcoat (seen here) to under $120.
  • Rue La La: Their Final Sale has launched (but, it’s final, so no returns)
  • Club Monaco: Select pieces of outerwear are 30% off.
  • Haute Look: Their Billy Reid event has some tempting stuff in it.
  • Flint & Tinder: $20 off belts + jeans w/ MEANJEANS through 11/8
  • Lands’ End: Their F&F sale is going on. Picks over here.

    Hey Joe,
Brooks brothers has their veterans day sale going.
70% off selected items. mostly stuff that was already on sale.

While it appears the stacking at Piperlime has gone away (received this message after entering the WARMUP code & then attempting to enter SILVER13 — http://i.imgur.com/HrUAQx1.jpg), I still might have to pick up the Red Wing’s above or the Iron Rangers. Decisions, decisions….

  3. ducatisteve says

    November 7, 2013 at 6:21 AM

Great picks, I am all OVER that navy camel hair blazer.

  4. Jeff Smith says

    November 7, 2013 at 6:44 AM

Use the code “pinecone” and that camel hair blazer (and most everything else) drops another 20%!

  5. Joe says

    November 7, 2013 at 6:53 AM

Strange. It’s still working for me. Wonder what’s going on there…

  6. Joe says

    November 7, 2013 at 6:53 AM

Thanks Jeff! Updated. Figured they’d have something new this AM.

  7. Joe says

    November 7, 2013 at 6:54 AM

Strange. Updated above. Codes are still stacking for me.

Any advice on website with 14 and up sizes for stylish boots/shoes?

  9. yoyorobbo says

    November 7, 2013 at 7:14 AM

Is there any special upkeep required for camel hair sport coats?

I have seen them so often in thrift shops, but they seem to be more *worn* than other materials in those instances. Just curious.

  10. Urbanitus says

    November 7, 2013 at 7:15 AM

    Didn’t stack for me either.

  11. Winfield Featherston says

I’m thinking you should put together a group order for everyone

  12. RJC says

TPGP – Papyrus? Really? I’ve been looking for a Dappered-type site for my wife to browse for a while but I can’t make anybody look at Papyrus.

Anybody considering the MF double monk should note that they’re definitely on the wane.
On Haute Look Billy Reid’s Anderson DB suit is a killer deal – if you think you’re up for a wool/cashmere DB suit it’s tough to beat $400

  13. ducatisteve says

    November 7, 2013 at 7:57 AM

Nice catch! You lose the free shipping, but it’s still a $12 saving.

  14. dackman says

    November 7, 2013 at 8:09 AM

Stacking still working for me, just picked up the Clark’s DB in Beeswax for $76 w/tax, than got them down to $55 with rewards.

  15. Farhan says

    November 7, 2013 at 8:16 AM

Joe – I’ve looked through the site but can’t find the info anywhere. What size did you end up getting in that Boden quilted jacket? I’m usually the same size as you and am trying to decide between M or sizing down to S.

Speaking of Boden, they have a tiered discount going on at the moment with free shipping.

  16. Farhan says

    November 7, 2013 at 8:17 AM

I ordered something maybe 15 minutes ago. The stacking worked for me.

  17. Tim S says

    November 7, 2013 at 8:20 AM

Joe, isn’t the presence of some awesome blazers at JCP evidence that Wooster’s influence is still (somewhat) in effect?

  18. Joe says

    November 7, 2013 at 8:24 AM

I got a medium. Boden can run a little big sometimes, but the medium fits me perfectly. Good luck!

  19. jamie says

    November 7, 2013 at 8:42 AM

Is there a code? Not seeing a tiered discount on the website.

  20. Alan says

    November 7, 2013 at 8:43 AM

ARG! I should have just stayed away… Now I have to go to JCP today…

  21. David Bjerke says

    November 7, 2013 at 8:43 AM

So odd… something strange going on as the SILVER13 doesn’t even work without WARMUP for me. Says it’s valid for one-time use but I’ve never used it so who knows…

  22. Farhan says

    November 7, 2013 at 8:48 AM

I received an email and followed that to get to the site. It doesn’t make me enter a code but I see a banner at the top that says up to $45 off and free shipping. The tiers are $15 off $75, $30 off $150, and $45 off $200. I assumed that was for everyone and not linked to the email. Hmmm . . .

It figures that the quilted charcoal jacket is $2 shy off the $45 discount and Boden has nothing cheap that you can toss in your cart to make the $200 threshold.

  23. DXLi says

The fantastic PINECONE works on the Claiborne charcoal grey suit you mentioned as the best bang for the buck, dropping the suit from $180 (sale) to $135!

    Tiered code is Z1T2 ($15 off $75, $30 off $150, $45 off $200)
    15% off code is N005

There’s more or less always a Boden code going on.

You’ve got to use your BR/GAP card.. possibly the Luxe level. Worked for me. $45 Iron Rangers w/ the two discounts and my rewards stacked.

  33. Joe says

    November 7, 2013 at 10:11 AM

    Nope, that’s a 38R.

  34. RJC says

If anyone is looking for a white OCBD, Brooks Brothers has their Great Gatsby on a huge discount- it’s $32 with free shipping. Unlined collar and shirred yoke included. It’s a great shirt.

  35. Farhan says

    November 7, 2013 at 10:24 AM

With the PiperLime codes not stacking – someone on the threads posted they think the Silver13 code might be for card holders only. Those of us with Gap/BR cards are not having issues. Although even then it might be limited to Luxe members only. We’re not sure, but it would help explain why it’s working for so many while so many others are having issues with it.

  36. Adam says

    November 7, 2013 at 10:27 AM

You must have had a bunch of rewards waiting! I snagged the Clarks for $50.

  37. Mike says

    November 7, 2013 at 10:31 AM

Yes, you must have a Gap/BR card (it’s in the details of the code).

I just tried stacking and paying with a BR card. Silver13 stacks no problem on Red Wing Iron Rangers, so I am guessing that it should work on every other pair too. $178. Very tempting.

  38. ike says

    November 7, 2013 at 11:15 AM

Has anyone looked at the stafford courodry jacket on sale 60 bucks. Is it terrible? I’d like to pull the trigger on the brooks brother shirt but it seems really slim. In my neck size it would be a 42 chest and I’m a 44. Anyone know how they fit?

  39. jdw says

    November 7, 2013 at 12:30 PM

Since you mentioned the Christmas music at JCP in the comment on Nordstrom, I think it’s worth noting: Nordstrom doesn’t do anything Christmas-related until after Thanksgiving. They think it’s uncouth. They’ve been known to put up a sign with the following text in their stores: “We won’t be decking our halls until [the day after Thanksgiving]. Why? Well, we just like the idea of celebrating one holiday at a time.”

  40. John says

    November 7, 2013 at 1:49 PM

Trying so damn hard not to pull the trigger on that… not in the current budget. Damn.

  43. Jack says

I have it. Only thing id say is the jacket is a bit chopped.

  44. Joe says

Nordstrom does a LOT right, don’t they.

  45. John P. says

    November 7, 2013 at 6:44 PM

I like the look of the Merino blazers on JCP (http://tinyurl.com/mekk6c6). Anyone have any info on fit?

  46. Ronn says

    November 7, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Another random code for those that are into it. Betabrand discount code Ronebb20 gets you 20% off. It’s quirky clothing but a great deal of it IS made in the US.

  47. Tom says

    November 8, 2013 at 7:40 AM

Joe, JCP lowered their price this morning on the Stafford Camel Hair Blazer to $79.99 pre PINECONE code. That takes it down to $63.99. I’m glad that I hesitated yesterday and ordered today!

  48. Clay Zakarian says

    November 8, 2013 at 8:23 AM

Mine is showing $79.99 and down to $59.99 with PNECONE. Going to check this out in my local store.

  49. Joe says

    Updated!

  50. diversification says

    November 8, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Please look carefully at the measurements before buying if this is your first experience with Brooks Brothers: Note, Brooks Brothers idea of Slim Fit is really not that slim. Even their Extra Slim Fit won’t work very well on very slim guys.

    Here are my measurements: http://sizegui.de/u/diversification

If I bought a BB shirt in ESF with a 16″ collar, it says that it should fit a chest that measures 40″ – seems perfect b/c my chest measures 40″. Here’s the problem: it then gives the waist measurement of the shirt as 43″. Assuming there’s around 5″ of taper from the chest to the waist, that means that the chest measures 48″, which does NOT fit a 40″ chest well at all. Any slim guy knows that with 8″ excess, they’re going to be swimming. Oh, and lets not forget that the 43″ waist gives my waist 9.5″ extra inches. REALLY? EXTRA SLIM?

Now just imagine a slim fit…

  51. RJC says

    November 8, 2013 at 12:57 PM

BB is known for having fuller fits- I expect to have to tailor my shirt but still consider $45 post-tailoring a great deal for a made-in-the-US OCBD.

  52. diversification says

    November 8, 2013 at 1:10 PM

Again, I’d warn those without BB experience to tread carefully. Removing more than a couple inches at the sides is a major operation and could leave the shirt looking very off if the tailor isn’t very skilled; keep in mind that the arms will need to be slimmed to match the reconstructed body in this case. Additionally, the shoulders are likely to be oversized and that’s something that really can’t be tailored.

  53. Tom says

    November 14, 2013 at 10:25 AM

I just went and tried them on today while picking up my camel hair blazer and the fit seemed to be about spot on with the camel hair although the shoulders seemed a little stronger than the camel hair. Granted the camel hair is my first blazer and the only other jacket that I own is an ill-fitting Indochino suit, I am considering getting both (Dark Grey Flannel & Brown Blue Plaid) if there is another sale like this!

  54. John P. says

    November 15, 2013 at 12:37 PM

Thanks for the info. That brown-blue plaid is calling my name.
I didn’t know there was such a thing as an ill-fitting Indochino suit.
