Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
J. Crew Factory: 50% off EVERYTHING
The Picks: Thompson Elbow Patch Sportcoat in Navy Tweed – $109.00 ($218), Thompson Glen Plaid Flannel Suit Jacket + Pant – $213 ($426), Thompson Grey Flannel Suit Jacket + Pant – $213 ($426), Slim Merino V Sweater – $32.00 ($64.50)
Its been a year since J. Crew Factory threw open their virtual doors online, and to celebrate they’ve cut the prices on everything (including the brand new arrivals that just showed up yesterday) by half. The new navy tweed sportcoat is especially tempting. Suede elbow patches. Here’s to hoping it fits as well as their herringbone sportcoat. Meanwhile, good call by Derric in the comments who noticed they just released another flannel Thompson suit, this time in glen plaid. This, is in addition to the released-a-few-months-back regular wool glen plaid suit. Impressive. Prices are as marked. Sale goes through Monday 10/14.
EXPRESS: $25 off every $75 w/ 1914 + 40% off sweaters & outerwear
The Picks: Slim Fit Wool Blend Topcoat + Lipgloss = $108.50 TOTAL ($255)
Two Fitted Merino V-Necks – $29.44 per ($69.90)
Many thanks to David P. who sent in the style tip about the sale as well as the $25 off $75 code 1914. So here’s how this works:
- The Topcoat is 40% off and now $148.80, which is obviously just under $150. But $150 is the next $25 off every $75 with code 1914 threshold. So by buying the cheap lipgloss you actually save $18 more dollars than if you would have just bought the coat itself. There’s socks at $10.90 if you’d prefer that to the lip gloss.
- Express has started to make “fitted” sweaters, much like J. Crew and J. Crew Factory. They’re marked down to $41.94 for the 40% off promo, and buy buying two you get over $75. That means you can use 1914 and the total drops to $58.88 for two slim Merino V necks.
The one drag is the $8.00 shipping, and free shipping doesn’t kick in until $125 after codes have been applied. Coat is on the way for the annual affordable outerwear feature.
Piperlime: 30% off select shoes & apparel w/ FALL
The Picks: Frye Made in the USA “Arkansas” boot – $187.60 ($238), Dockers Alpha Khakis – $41.30
($59), Threads for Thought Thermal Henley – $30.80
($44)
Piperlime? Been awhile since they got a mention. But this “FALL” code can be applied to some decent goods. Pebble full grain leather and made in the USA for the Fryes. More on them over here. Alpha Khakis down to the low $40s. Plus, everything ships and returns free… no minimum.
J. Crew: Extra 40% off Sale Items w/ EXTRA40
The Picks: Unconstructed Colorblock Linen Jacket – $95.99 ($198), Leather iPhone Case – $15.00 ($38), Ludlow Blazer in Cashmere – $387 ($695)
Been running since early this week and the sale section is pretty picked over. Careful, because there’s LOTS of final sale stuff in there. At post time just 36R and 42R left in the super-expensive… but cashmere… blazer. iPhone case just got the nod from Andrew in his 5 Favorites.
JCPenney: $10 off $50, $15 off $75 w/ SAVE35
The Picks: Claiborne Cashmere Cable Sweater – $64.99 ($100), Cord Blazer – $47.99 ($80), Levi’s 505 – $36.99 ($40) Claiborne Seed Stitch Sweater – $23.99 ($40)
Anyone notice that JCP has officially gone back to JC Penney in their logos? No more red box with the blue “jcp” in the corner. Anyway, the tiered code SAVE35 also gets you $20 off $100 and $50 off $200. The cashmere sweater is surprisingly nice feeling and the code gets it under $65. Consider sizing down though, that’s a small shown above. Cord blazer is now a steal at $48. Size shown is a 38. Add some jeans, use the code, and the blazer + Levi’s dip to $69.98 total. Code expires today, 10/10.
BONUS: Hugh & Crye: Buggyback blazers – $195 w/ BUGGY195
The Picks: Wool/Poly Charcoal Plaid – $195 ($245), 100% Wool Navy Hopsack – $195 ($245)
Buggyback = Partially lined. Just the very top of the back has lining to it, which is preferred by many who like even their wool blazers to be nice and airy/breezy. Usually $245. Made the best-blazers feature not that long ago.
Also worth a mention: DSW has a tiered code, GOSHOESGO , active through 10/15. B.R. is running a 40% off full priced outerwear + sweaters code: BRCOZY through Sunday, which drops the Donegal topcoat to $178.80. Christopher Ward is offering free worldwide shipping with the code SHIPFREE through the weekend. Land’s End / L.E.C. is offering $20 off $75 with COLORFUL and 2075 through the weekend. UNIQLO has some new arrivals, including the much-potential “chesterfield” topcoat at $99.90. Jack Spade has some new additions to their sale section, including their pricey, but good looking sailcloth jacket. GAP is offering 35% off with the code GAPSAIL through the Monday. Cole Haan is running a 30% off select items sale with the code FALL30. Billy Reid just launched their Friends and Family Sale, offering 20% off with the code FRIENDS through 10/20. So if you’ve been saving up for the Bond peacoat, now’s a good time.
Does the Thompson line ever make any blazers in 38 S? I have never been able to find one online in that size.
You and me both!
Update on Jcrew Factory: they’re now running a 50% off sale including all new arrivals. And just to mention, the new glen plaid charcoal suit they just released looks killer in person. The photos online don’t do it justice.
So many things I want…
H&C’s sizing nonsense makes even less sense for blazers. If it’s not MTM, why bother with the weird height/width stuff? Is it cheaper than just making a range of blazers in various sizes?
Came to post this. Thompson elbow patch drops to $109.
Any logo concerns with the Express sweaters? I don’t see one on that black v-neck in the pic above, but then again it *is* a tad early for my still-sleepy eyes – wondering if maybe they’ve hidden a dark purple one on there or something.
Lip gloss? Seriously?
I clearly missed the entire point, my friend
Na chief. I got it.
No problem indian.
To save on Express shipping, a store rep said that if you go to your local store, they can go online at the register, you buy the pieces, and Express ships it to the store for free. I think this will also save you losing that $8 if you need to return it to the store.
JCF has a 50% discount from today till monday, the Navy Tweed jacket has been reduced to $109.
Has anyone gave these a try on at jcp? It doesnt mention the fit…

I emailed in February, when they started offering 36R and 36S, if they would start offering 38S and 40S. No dice back then.
A few people already posted about the J. Crew Factory sale so I thought I’d mention about a couple of things that I haven’t seen highlighted here yet: Flannel glen plaid suit (to go along with the regular wool glen plaid suit), vests for the navy and gray wool suits, and a velvet sport coat.
I’ve seen them in 38s online but they’re rare. Really wish they would make more.
Anybody have any experience with this years JCF Thompson in Charcoal Herringbone? I know Joe posted about the Brown version, wanted to see if the quality on the Charcoal was better than last years version which received horrible reviews.
JCrew Factory is now 50% off making the Tweed Navy Jacket $109
just got a J crew factory email, everything (including new arrivals) is 50% off, so that makes the elbow patch blazer $109
No logos on any of their merino sweaters I have.
Updated. Thanks Jared!
No logos. Awesome sweaters. Get ’em.
Lady friend. Or, your Mom.
Great call on the addition of the Glen Plaid Flannel. I breezed right over that. Never even registered. Added above.
How can JCrew Factory justify not making pants with a longer inseam than waist? Their sizing is so weird. 36/30 but no 32×34?
Perhaps an inbox stuffed with the emails of tall skinny potential customers could persuade them. But you would think they would err on the side of length, since I doubt having to hem the pants is going to dissuade too many people.
I continue to be extremely impressed by J Crew Factory’s offerings.
Really intriguing… its grey not navy, correct? How is the weight of the “flannel” fabric? Thin, heavy?
Jumped on the topcoat last night, here’s to hoping it’s not too slim to fit a suit underneath.
Maybe. They’re just not getting my dollars. They’d have gotten quite a few of them if they made 40L jackets or pants in reasonable sizes. They just don’t make pants longer than a 32.
JCrew Factory, no XXL in any of your sweaters? Thanks for nothing, jerk.
Thanks for the inside scoop, fellas.
This is insane indeed no 36 length!!!, all my friends are at least 6″0 and they are normal guys not basket ball players
Great blazer, super stylish, give you this cool look when layered properly a great shirt and a slim sweater
Yeah, and on the other side, nothing below 30″. There goes every man under 5’8″ (without hemming).
You guys got me again. Just ordered my first flannel suit. After the navy blue chino blazer fit so perfectly with minor alterations, this just seems like a no brainer.
Anyone able to comment on the weight/thickness of JCF’s flannel suiting? I barely ever wear the LLBS flannel suit I own because it is so hot.
It’s pretty lightweight. It’s maybe a tiny bit warmer than a standard Ludlow.
Hey Joe – small website question. Could you separate the “also worth a mention” ones in a bullet-point or other format? Would make it easier to read..
Good call. But just THINK of all the money that has been saved because the “also worth a mention” has been too hard to read.
Touché, sir. But just THINK of all the deals that we’re missed! 🙂
First time poster. Are JCF slim broken in’s pretty much the same fit at Bowery Slims? If not what is equivalent?
Just ordered the Navy Tweed Sportscoat.. thanks for the tip!
I sent them an email I got this response.
“Thanks for reaching out regarding additional sizing in our Factory Thompson Pant. I’ve looked into this for you and I’m sad to say there are no plans to offer a 34″ inseam in the smaller waist sizes. I apologize. I’ll be happy to pass this feedback along to our design team. With enough interest, perhaps we’ll be able to offer this length in the future.”
For anyone interested. Gave this a whirl. Now on sale for 49.99 (less 20% with a jcp card charged) in dark brown only. Fit was spot-on everywhere but the sleeves which will have to get shortened a tad. I wear a small in the current season GAP corduroy blazer, and this small was pretty much the same fit.
Pretty happy I took an in-person look as I have not seen this blazer spoken about on here. Would recommend.
I would add J. Crew Wallace & Barnes Skiff Jacket. It fits really slim, the length is perfect and with INSTYLE25 code it can be had for $200.
You mention the claiborne sweater at jcp… the jcp merino wool sweater is great for the price
Tried the Express topcoat at a brick and mortar store today and its alright, nothing to write home about. The fit is really good on its own but I’m not entirely sure it would fit a suit underneath it as it fits pretty slim. For the original price I was expecting a little more quality but at $100ish bucks its worth it but I wouldn’t pay much more than that for the 60% wool + assortment of other fabric mix. I’ll stick with my peacoat to put over a suit for now.
got three of them for like sixty five bucks with the code. love them.
I’m having trouble deciding on JCF or Express slim merino sweaters. I’ve had poor luck with express in the past. Any suggestions?
Had a one time use only coupon from J Crew Factory for 20% off, from an order in September. It stacked with the 50% off, now to see if it ships. Too bad they do not carry the Donegal Elbow Patch sweater online, it was sold out in my size in store.
Also used the DSW code to buy the Wolverine 1000 Mile Montgomery boots.
It’s gray that is correct. I just wore mine yesterday for the first time. Pretty good off the rack fit. It’s hard to judge since I’ve been loosing weight, but I don’t think this is as trim as the navy wool Thompson suit-I think it’s purposeful though for winter layering. The fabric is light in weight–it can actually be worn in 70ish degree weather to be honest. They advertise this as a glen plaid, but it’s actually much larger than you traditional tighter glen plaid. Id personally say it’s a price of Wales check. Oh, and it looks like the lapel on a 44r is a hair wider compared to some of their other jackets. I’ve actually noticed that they’ve been slimming down the lapels on the factory suits more than retail. Some are a bit too line IMO. They got this one just right.
