BR Suiting, Inception Like Top Cufflinks & More – The Thursday Handful

October 24, 2013 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

Banana Republic: 30% off Full Priced Suiting w/ BRSUIT

br suiting handful

The Picks: Tailored-Fit Navy Italian Wool Suit Jacket & Matching Trouser – $385 ($550), the new Modern-Fit Grey Flannel Blazer – $165.00 w/ BRFALL ($275)

Well now. A Banana Republic code that works on suiting? Sure they’re fused, but they’re as good as a fused suit gets. Helped a pal pick out a suit for his wedding, and he went with the Navy Italian Wool option from BR. The wool really does feel top notch, and the jacket moves well for not having a canvas. A hundred dollars more gets you a Suitsupply… but that’s a hundred bucks. Here’s to hoping the code works on blazers as well (it very well might not) since the new ticket-pocket equipped flannel blazer looks outstanding. Also know that they’re running a 40% off code today: BRFALL. Both codes expire today, 10/24.

Update: BRFALL seems to work on the blazer. Which is strange, but, well, thanks for that BR. Credit Joe C. in the comments for noticing.

Update II: Use BRFALL on suit pants to drop the price on the suits even more. Thanks to mjc.

Huckberry: J.L. Lawson & Co. + Izola Bar & Home

Huckberry Giftables October

The Picks: J. L. Lawson & Co. OOVII- Cufflink Spinners – $59.98 ($72), Izola Neat Flask – $21.98 ($27), Izola Balsam Incense – $12.98 ($15)

Huckberry has some awfully gift-able brands on sale right now. And with the holidays right around the corner, these might be worth a look for that hard to buy for pal, or, for giving Santa a few hints for your list. A sunset walk with a flask is one of fall’s great pleasures. And once you get back home, Balsam (or Red Cedar) incense is a great way to set an olfactory mood. And those cufflinks? Manually Machined in Joshua Tree CA. Nice to have on hand, and on the wrist, for those times you start to question your own reality.

Lord & Taylor: 25% off almost everything w/ FRIENDS

L&T FandF sale

The Picks: Calvin Klein Slim Fit Wool Notch Lapel Tux – $292.50 ($650), Kenneth Cole Reaction Dowel Brief – $172.50 ($460), DKNY Birdseye Suit – $267.75 ($357)

L&T often carries merchandise that’s just a step above what Macy’s usually carries, but still isn’t quite at Nordstrom levels. Retail is high, sales come along often, and an extra 25% off F&F code FRIENDS is most welcome. For the tux, the purists will scoff at the lack of peak lapels, but they don’t look super skinny, and the notch is set nice and high on the chest (giving it a sorta peak-like, yet not at the same time, appearance). All wool, claims to be a slim fit, under three bills and ships free.

J. Crew Factory: Extra 30% off everything w/ SALE30

Factory New Arrivals

The Picks: Suede palm knit acrylic gloves – $17.15 ($26.50), Grey Suede Desert Boots – $61.60 ($98)

A little h0-hum coming off the 50% off everything blow out from last week, but there’s a few new arrivals from this week that are worth a look. Those suede palm knit gloves would make for a nice casual/backup option to your leather gloves, and the suede desert boots in dark charcoal look pretty good for $61.60 w/ the code. $5 flat rate shipping up to $100, which is where free shipping kicks in.

Boden: Mid Season Sale

Boden Mid Season

The Picks: The Poacher in British Millerain Navy – $138.60 ($198), Wool Blend (80%) quilted jacket – $158.50 ($198), the Lambswool Scarf – $46.40 ($58)

Even though their men’s side doesn’t have a ton of offerings, Boden doesn’t get enough play here. A British brand that prides itself on well made basics (even if they are from… “imported”) Boden gets a lot of things right. Be wary of blazers and suit jackets though… they run large and the button stance seems to drift a bit far north. Also know that shipping and returns can be a total pain.

Bonus: Waitin’ on a sale at Lands’ End

LEC blackwatch blazer

The Pick: Blackwatch Wool Sportcoat – $169.00

The rollout for LEC’s new arrivals seems awfully slow this season. Just four items so far on the guy’s side? This blackwatch sportcoat is 70% wool, 30% poly, and aside from the sleeves, the lining is all cotton. An interesting mix of fabrics there for sure. Description says the sleeve buttons are functional, so that could be a problem. But at 40% off (say, a one item sale) it drops to just above a hundred bucks. Hm.

Bonus Part II – Bonobos: 25% off $175+ w/ HIGHSCORE

Bonobos 175 and up

The Picks: Washed Chino Blazer – $148.50 ($198), DB Madison Topcoat – $373.50 ($498), Fairfax Grey or Khaki Cotton Suit Jacket + Grey or Khaki Pant – $162.00

The minimum spend threshold is awfully high, but their washed chino blazers clock in at $198. So, they get the cut and are now under $150. Five colors available. Meanwhile, look for the Double Breasted topcoat in the annual Best Outerwear post next week. Many thanks to Andy for sending in the Friday morning style tip. Also, thanks to Keith F. for the heads up about how low the Fairfax cotton suits have dipped.

Also worth a mention

  • J.Crew: 25% off $150+ (suiting, Ludlow outerwear & shoes excluded) with SHOPNOW.
  • Express: $15 off $30, $30 off $75, $60 off $150 w/ 1986
  • Sierra Trading Post: 25% off $125+ or 30% off $200+ – use coupon code ALOCT3. Y’know, in case you wanted to drop almost a grand on this automatic or this mechanical chrono.
  • LastCall: 40% off one item through today.
  • Brooks Brothers: 15% off during their preferred customer event (25% off if you have a card)
  • Frank & Oak: Their Fall’s Last Call Final Sale is going on.
  • Maxton Men: 20% off Wallets w/ WALLETS20

Beware: That Boden waxed jacket has a BRIGHT orange liner inside. Doesn’t matter if you’re younger or have it zipped up most of the time but could be a deal breaker for some. Also, the sleeves are a tiny bit too short, imo.

I’ve been interested in boden for a while. They have some good looking stuff but prices are a bit steep to just take a risk on especially with fit being somewhat of an unknown. That poacher jacket looks great though.

Just tried it on a blazer, it worked. Didn’t buy it, but it showed 30% off.

FYI: You can stack the 25% new email signup with the BR sale (and yes, it works on blazers) which bring the stuff to about half price.

I know the “Modern” fit blazers at Banana Republic are not as tailored as the “Tailored” fit but how much looser are they? Their 38R Tailored fit fits me perfectly without any alterations to sleeve or waist. Just wondering.

I ordered the Boden jacket after it appeared on Dappered the first time earlier this year. The jacket ended up being a different color in final production than it was on the website. Which was fine, Boden provided me with a free return label in case I didn’t like the final colors.

Overall, I was extremely disappointed with the jacket. The color was not remotely close to what it was on the picture. It looked sort of muddled and drab in my opinion. I found the millerain fabric wasn’t particularly up my alley. Overall, the jacket was far far less impressive in real life than it is in the picture visually. Though quality wise it seemed to be pretty well put together.

I was never interested in LE but I have definitely given up on LEC (and so has LE, it seems!) I was never as big into LEC as other people around here but I got a few great pieces from them and they were a good player in the middle-range GAP-level market but trying to move into more expensive, J. Crew-level stuff was a horrible, horrible mistake.

“Modern Slim” fit is actually their slimmest fit.

  12. DXLi says

    October 24, 2013 at 7:15 AM

I think I see what you mean. In the pic above, the jacket looks like it has a cool Barbour-esque waxed fabric, but in some of the pics on the site, it just looks like the fabric you’d find on a Columbia rain jacket or the like.

  13. CG says

    October 24, 2013 at 7:16 AM

Has anyone seen that Boden quilted jacket up close? Seems kind of pricey but I like the look of it.

Ohhhh I get it, I think you got lost on your way to http://www.grammarblog.co.uk

That BR 40% off code does work on the flannel blazer, fyi – takes it down to $165.

And really glad to see Boden on this list – had never heard of them until someone posted that quilted jacket on /r/malefashionadvice, now looking forward to trying some of their stuff.

  20. Mark Johnson says

George Clooney regularly sports a notch lapel tux. If it’s good enough for him…
Most guys will wear a tux at most a couple times a year – actually that’s heavy wear for most guys. I don’t own a tux and haven’t even rented one since my senior prom, other than for weddings where the groom wanted everyone coordinated. I guess that’s my way of saying that if I were to buy a tux, I wouldn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on it – something very affordable on sale like this one would be ideal.

  21. Mark Johnson says

    October 24, 2013 at 8:26 AM

Also, I like that quilted Boden jacket (I jumped on the Land’s End British Millerain coat last year so I don’t need another) but if returns really are a pain I wouldn’t go for it unless I was sure of the fit, which I’m not.

  22. hornsup84 says

    October 24, 2013 at 8:28 AM

I wore it today. I’m a big fan, although some people apparently dislike the lining, which is a bit old school. Runs a little big, so check their size guide — I’m 6’3 225 and usually wear a 44L and ordered a Large. I may have been able to go with a Medium, but went w the Large to allow for layering.

As for price, it’s not that expensive if you’re considering other quilted jackets offered by Barbour, JCrew, etc. I would note that this is a heavier coat — not a light spring/fall coat.

In AMProf’s defense, “suiting” *did* mean cloth used to make suits. The use of it to refer to suits themselves is rather recent, and, frankly, rather silly — the word had a perfectly good definition already, and “suits” was a pretty good word to refer to suits.

That said, screaming about how language has changed is asinine and contrary to the way language actually works.

  27. Joe says

    October 24, 2013 at 9:24 AM

But is a suit still a suit if it’s part of a pair of suit separates?

BR refers to what they make as suiting. Doesn’t bug me personally.

  28. Joe says

  32. Jose says

  33. Mike N says

I actually find the cut, variety, and pricing of their options less appealing than before. I don’t remember the exact desription of their old straight/slim pants but they fit me much better than the 608v628 now.

  34. darth_ninja says

    October 24, 2013 at 10:56 AM

For the LE / LEC coupon, try SPOOKY 3005 for 30% off one item. I really dig the sweater the model is wearing in that pic, too. I think it’s Lands End mainline.

  36. BJ McGeever says

  37. BJ McGeever says

    October 24, 2013 at 11:12 AM

  39. southy says

If it’s that or renting, give me that CK tux every day of the week and twice on Sunday. The high notch may not be traditional but it does have a shawl-y look about it, which is just fine.

  40. southy says

    October 24, 2013 at 2:34 PM

Those Boden pieces are starting to get up into a range with a lot of options. If I were looking at a quilted I’d take a long hard look at something like this: http://www.massimodutti.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/duttius/en/30109527/792033/3057509/BROWN%2BQUILTED%2BJACKET where you know the quality, fit, and details are going to be top notch.

Wondering about the fit and overall look of the poacher jacket. I read your first comments when it was originally shown here in dappered and you seemed very happy with it. Has it handled itself well over the past while? I’m looking for a waxed cotton jacket that I can throw on whenever, use it potentially to travel around as well.

  42. Nam says

    October 24, 2013 at 3:44 PM

I am pretty happy with the jacket overall! I think the quality that you get for the price is pretty great. Now, I do wish the sleeves are a bit longer. I am 5’10” and 147 lbs so I got a Small. When my arms are on the sides, the sleeves fit fine, it’s just that when I drive and stuff, the sleeves rides up a little more than I would like. It’s not short by any means, just not comfortably long if that makes sense? The waxed cotton does feel pretty nice and it comes from a respectable mill. The other thing is that the orange liner has became a little too flashy than I would like but I wear it buttoned up in the middle most of the time so that fixes that.
Honestly, if I don’t have a waxed cotton jacket, I would buy this thing again in a heart beat!

  43. Kiyoto.K says

    October 24, 2013 at 3:47 PM

Awesome thanks so much!! Hmmm same height and about the same weight as me. I’m eyeing the XS just because I rather things fit a little slimmer. How’s the fit on it?

  44. Nam says

    October 24, 2013 at 8:06 PM

The fit is medium, I would say. Not baggy but I wouldn’t call it slim either. I don’t think there’s such a thing as a slim waxed cotton jacket. If you look at most barbour jackets, they are very boxy! If you are the same height as I am and you size down, I think the sleeves would be too short.

  45. Kiyoto.K says

    October 25, 2013 at 12:38 AM

thanks again, really appreciate the feedback. pulled the trigger on the olive XS poacher (which is on sale for 158 as opposed to the 138 navy *stink eye). i checked the measurements, size S and XS have the same length sleeves, hopefully all is good in my order…

Anyone know how the sizing is on those j crew factory boots?

  47. David C says

    October 25, 2013 at 9:46 AM

If they are the same gloves as last year, I would avoid them. The suede started detaching from the glove after a few wears, and the fingers are too long. Really thick and cumbersome to wear too. I picked up a pair of leather/cashmere lined gloves from the regular J. Crew on clearance for $35 and was much happier.

  48. David C says

    October 25, 2013 at 9:52 AM

I have a pair from last year, and they’re terrible. The suede started detaching after a few wears, they are too thick and the fingers too long. I find JCF rather underwhelming these days and have end up returning over half the stuff I order from them. Also if you play the sales game right, you can usually find stuff at the mainline JC stores for about the same or sometimes less. And the material and construction blows Factory out of the water.

  50. Tom says

    October 26, 2013 at 9:17 PM

Thank you! I had to have the gray blazer, but couldn’t stand the fact I missed 40% off by one day. I stacked the BRHARVEST 30% with the 25%, and threw in a black cord blazer while I was at it (which only took the 25%). So if I look good this fall/winter, it’s almost directly due to the fact you posted this. THIS is why the Internet is so great.

just got my boden poacher jacket in today, and i LOVE IT!!! can’t really say more without gushing too much, but its damn perfect. XS fits me great, sleeves were right on and there’s enough room to layer but still cutting a slim look. i can’t say how much in love with this jacket i am! @disqus_9544YF3cEq:disqus thanks for the insight!!
