Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
J. Crew Factory: 30% off new arrivals + 30% off w/ THIRTY
The Picks: Thompson Sportcoat in Herringbone – $131.60 ($188), Layering Vest – $48.65 ($69.50), Honeycomb Shawl Collar Pullover – $55.65 ($79.50)
And it arrived. Featured yesterday, got a good review in the comments by Tom, and now here’s some more confirmation. This thing is great. Off the rack through the sides is perfect. Sleeves run a little long, but buttons are non functioning. 90% wool / 10% nylon body and the fabric walks the perfect line between tweed-like scratch and the softness of a merino-like wool. Also available in charcoal. Nice work once again Factory. Prices are up from the 30% off + VIP code double down, but stacking sales + codes like that doesn’t seem to happen every day. Or week.
Macy’s: Extra 20% off with VIP
The Picks: Bar III Encore Side-Zip Wingtip Boots – $79.99 ($99.99), Allen Edmonds Strand in Bourbon – $276.00 ($345)
Hat tip to Phil E. who sent in the tip about these boots and took an in person pic as well (he said the color is better in person) Strong potential to be a replacement for the Stafford Camlin here. According to Phil the leather is soft and the color is nice. The item title does have “side zip” in there… wish we could see if it really is or not on the Macy’s website. Meanwhile… Macy’s sells Allen Edmonds? And codes work on them? What? Still way up there at almost three bills, but if memory serves, the Strand in the new shade of Bourbon has yet to see any sort of significant markdowns. The McAllister did back in April though, so, fingers crossed for the Strand to get into the mid to low $200s. Code expires Sunday.
GAP: 35% off regular priced styles w/ GAPFALL
The Picks: Elbow Patch Lambswool Sweater – $32.47 ($49.95), 1969 Straight Fit Cords – $38.96
($59.95), Waxed Cotton Jacket – $83.20 ($128), Navy Trench – $76.70 ($118)
Seems like GAP has been sticking mainly to 20% or 25% off codes lately. So while this is only good on full priced styles, 35% off is a good solid discount. Lots to pick from, and at first glance their new fall arrivals look pretty strong. Nice addition of the quilted gun/shooting pad on the jacket. And a note to the GAP.com folks: If you’re selling an elbow patch sweater, it’d be nice to see what them elbow patches look like.
Jackthreads: Wolverine 1000 Mile Sale
The Picks: Wolverine 1000 Rockford – $230 ($395), Rowan – $245 ($445)
Yes, this is one of those flash-sale sites you need to hand over an email to access. And yes, you best be very careful with their return policy which is for store credit only. And $230 in Jack Threads store credit is a LOT of credit (their sales can sometimes be… less than desirable). Doesn’t say anything about these being 2nds quality. But if they were to show up and be seconds? Raise high-hell with customer service to get your cash back. Just do it within 7 days. Both of the above models are made in the USA. More on the Wolverine 1000 Mile collection, specifically the wingtip Addison, over here. UPDATE: The Rockfords are gone…
Banana Republic: Extra 40% off Sale Items w/ BRFALLSALE
The Picks: Banana Republic Modern Slim Fit Chalk Stripe Blazer – $107.99 ($250), Elbow Patch Crew – $23.99 ($59.50), Soft-Wash slim fit twill shirt – $17.99 ($59.50)
BR’s sale section isn’t exactly bursting right now, but there’s some hunting and pecking that could be done. The Chalk Stripe blazer just got the nod in yesterday’s best blazers post (got one on the way for an in-person with this new trimmer fit). Elbow patch crew could be a good cheap & casual sweater for the fall. The shirt? Just a shirt. Runs a tad big.
BONUS: Allen Edmonds 2 for $250 factory second closeouts
This gets a little complicated at first glance, and there are some hoops you have to jump through, but some guys swear by these things. The ordering isn’t done online, but instead in-person at outlet stores, or over the phone. What you can do online, over email, is get a list of what’s available in your size. Reddit has a great guide on how this works, and you can follow along today with the guys on Threads.
Also worth a mention: Club Monaco is offering an extra 30% off sale items through the weekend with EXTRA30. Sale section is awfully picked over, but there’s a few common sizes left in their Wright Sport Coat. J. Crew is still running their 25% off almost everything with SHOPFALL, and they just put up a bunch of new (expensive) arrivals. Selection can be found here. LastCall is 30% off site wide, which pushes these Italian Made Chukkas down to $160. Timberland has extended their 30% off promotion through today. Urban Outfitters is taking an extra 30% off everything in their sale section. Amazon is once again doing a select shoe orders $100+
with TAKE30OF. That drops the J&M Tyndall Boot to $129
, and the Cole Haan Air Madison Single Monk to $130
. Sierra Trading Post announced on twitter that they’re offering 35% off $100+ with the code STMD9313. And for you suited types who are good with making a solid investment, the Brooks Brothers 1818 Suiting event is going on. Two of their 1818 suits for $1399. Half canvas, made in the USA, four fits (Madison, Regent, Fitzgerald, and Milano). Ends Saturday.
One for the patient: yoox has free shipping no minimum till Saturday and RMNSAVES10 gets 10% off
Anyone had a chance to try out the Waxed Cotton Jacket from GAP?
Factory Thompson Sportcoat material is listed as Wool/Nylon. Anyone know if that’s exterior/lining or if the exterior is a blend? If the latter, what’s the percentages?
email jville@allenedmonds.com or call 7409489033 in order to get a list of what the AE stores have available. I usually deal with Kelsey and Kristle and they are both very accomodating.
90% wool, 10% nylon (says it in the article)
Uh, I knew that. Just checking if the rest of you were paying attention …
Speaking of tweed, Lands End has a tailored fit Harris Tweed jacket that looks tempting. It’s not on sale now, but anyone have any experience with their tailored fit? Is it a true tailored fit a la the Ludlow or Suitsupply Napoli? They kind of recommend sizing up but my experience with the regular Lands End stuff is it runs huge. I’ll probably wait for a sale (maybe this weekend?) but if the fit is reasonable it looks like a pretty good deal at full price – Harris Tweed don’t come cheap, generally speaking.
Agh, I wish you had an in person of that BR blazer up already. I’m debating whether to pull the trigger and if they sell out or it goes off sale I may be kicking myself.
Do you know which store that is? I usually email the Shoe Bank (shoebank@) and the Brookefield (brookfield@) stores.
Wolverine Rockfords are sold out
Plz provide sale code.
Damn. Or, well, good. Now I’m not tempted.
You can always get it, then return it if you don’t want to keep it.
that code seems to only work for a subset of their online stock. but since you got me onto the site, i grabbed a gitman bros. vintage shirt on sale!
Hmmm … looks like my original comment got mod’ed away because I linked to my blog and/or linked to Lands’ End. Ah well.
Repeating my answer — I’ve tried on the jacket–it’s really nice, and it’s a legit tailored fit. I recommend going true-to-size. Armholes are a little low.
You can get exact garment measurements if you go to Lands’ End site and look up the Tailored Fit Supima cotton twill suit jacket–there’s a link to an “Item Dimensions” pdf under “More Information.” I’m pretty sure it has the same measurements as the Harris Tweed jacket.
I don’t quite yet know how Amazon is doing these new codes, specifically the TAKE30OF one. It might be like a “select customer” sale at BR, where they use cookies and or user info to determine whether or not the discount applies. NEWFALL2 should work for everyone though. Apologies for that Steve.
I’ll be at the mall later tonight, so I’ll stop by Macys and take a look. Hold tight..
If you are thinking about picking up something from the Allen Edmonds 2 for 250 closeout, I can’t recommend the Ralph Lauren models enough. They are the ones near the bottom of the dress welts group that start with ‘S’ (eg Saunders, Singleton, Slaton, Sanderson).
I have the Saunders (chukka) in tan/walnut and the Sanderson (LWB) in brown (both seconds from the shoe bank) and love them both. The finishing is considered to be of a higher level than the standard AE shoes. I’ll see if I can get pictures in later.
Also for the Club Monaco 30% off sale items events, check out a brick and mortar if you can. The store nearest me is always chock full of good stuff, even when the sale section web site is barren. A good half of the store qualifies as already reduced for the extra 30%.
Kristle is great — she helped me score some cordovan Daltons two weeks ago during the cordovan sale.
Thanks. I wonder, do they sell their tailored suiting in Sears – I could try one on there if so. I may have to jump on this on their next 40% one item sale.
Not sure, to be honest. I’d call ahead and see.
I’ve been wanting a barbour waxed jacket, but this fits the budget better- only thing is the GAP jacket says “machine wash”. Every other waxed cotton jacket I’ve seen says “wipe with damp rag”/”do not wash”, etc., so i’m a little skeptical of this.
Did they have a RL designation in front of the model names? How can I tell if they are RL models? My list doesn’t have a single RL model.
How do the Ralph Lauren ae’s fit? True to Allen edmonds sizing?
Yeah I don’t know how “waxed” it really is.
I’ve heard that they fit narrow. It’s a custom last that’s similar to the 2-last. I normally wear 7E on the 5-last and went with that and they fit fine. The Saunders is a bit roomy but that’s mostly because it’s a boot.
They do not have RL in front on the email lists (unlike Brooks). I think the 4 names I listed are the only RL models they have but I could be wrong. If there are any more, they definitely start with the letter S and should be grouped together.
yup jeffersonville sorry got caught up
yeah shes awesome, scored me an entire new collection including my most coveted cordovan strands. btw joe try the sale, you will never buy shoes any other way again
Love the color on the sportscoat
I feel you a fellow 40S brother. I’m not into the trendy cropped look but finding sleeves that fit off the rack is impossible. Either the R fits well but sleeves are way too long or the S is just below the belt line.
100% agree. They knocked it out of the park. Sleeves a bit long and I had to size up to a large for the body. Seems it was sized for casual wear and not for a suit jacket under.
Phil E., your pic does not show the side zipper. It looks to me like there isn’t a side zipper. Can you confirm, and if there is, post a pic? Thanks.
Hi folks – long time lurker, first-time commenter. I was able to snag a pair of the Bar IIIs at the Beverly Center Macy’s in LA, so I’m not sure why the rep said they weren’t available at CA stores.
However, it’s possible these are slightly different model from the ones on the website – they definitely don’t have a side zipper. The color is a very dark tan, but the leather seems pretty soft given the $80 price. (Even in store, there was a 20% off discount.)
The inside is lined with what appears to be wool – I’ll post another photo in a follow up comment. In terms of size, they do seem a bit large – I usually wear a 9.5, and in these, I’m a 9.
Hope that’s helpful.
Here’s the inside of the Bar III boots:
You usually wear a 9.5 in a dress shoes?
So I just looked at the pairs ofdress shoes I have that fit the best, and turns out they are also 9’s. I was wrong – the boots are true-to-size.
Thanks!
