Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
J. Crew Factory: 30% off new arrivals + 30% off w/ VIP
The Picks: Thompson Topcoat in camel – $121.45 ($248), Thompson Flannel Suit Jacket + Pant – $208.60 ($428), Lambswool crew – $26.60 ($54.50)
Yep. They carried yesterday’s Factory First deal over to today. And the 30% off code VIP is still working and still stacking on the new arrivals deal. That code is good for free shipping as well. So this is one of the better J. Crew Factory deals in awhile. Thanks again to ari for the VIP code reminder. Full picks over here.
Jack Spade: Surplus Sale
The Picks: Wesson Leather Davis Brief – $220 ($425), Made in the USA Rancourt Boat Shoes – $80.00 ($250)
Jack Spade’s “surplus sale” ends today, but know that you do have to hand over an email address and your zip code to even access the thing. Inventory is limited, all sales are final.
Amazon: Fall Outlet Event
The Picks: Allen Edmonds Hanover in Bourbon – $254.93 ($345), Joseph Abboud Super 150s Windowpane Suit – $399.00
($995), Magnanni Grey Suede Lace-up – $154.64
($395)
Amazon is a bit of a sales cluster right now. There’s mulitple deals going on. For example:
- 30% off select shoe orders of $100
w/ TAKE30OF
- Then there’s 20% off select shoe orders of $100
w/ NEWFALL2
- They’re also running a 20% off select watches orders of $100+
w/ SEPWATCH. Y’know, in case you wanna save $400 on this… ridiculously expensive Raymond Weil
.
Got all that? Right. Weird. Plus they’ve launched a fall “outlet event” with a bunch of other stuff that’s marked down significantly and you don’t need a code to get the savings. Got the AE wholecuts on the way for an in person. A warning: they’re built on the same last as the Neumora, so they’re going to run a little long and they do have that slight chisel toe. But they might look awful smart with that made in the USA Abboud Super 150s(!) suit.
Levis: 30% off everything with FALLSTYLE
The Pick: 514 Slim Straight Jeans in Tumbled Rigid – $30.80 ($58)
This works out to $38.30 once they tack on the steep $7.50 shipping charge, but that’s still less than Zappos or Amazon who charge just over $40 total. If you buy a few pairs of jeans/pants/whatever, and get north of $100, they’ll ship free.
B.R. 40% off for cardmembers w/ BRCARD
The Picks: Tailored Fit Plaid Cotton Blazer – $150.00 ($250), Tailored Fit Black Cord Blazer – $118.80 ($198), Grey Cotton Waistcoat – $78.00
($130), Merino V-Neck – $41.70 ($69.50)
Yeah… kinda lame that you need to have signed up for a Banana Republic, GAP, or Old Navy credit card to use this code, but its worth a mention because: #1. the GAP inc brand are one of the more popular store cards to have, and #2. There’s hardly any exclusions. Even blazers get the cut. Code is good today and today only (9/12). More on the plaid blazer pictured above in the upcoming annual Best Blazers of the Fall post. The waistcoat pick is the same one seen over here.
Also worth a mention: GAP is 30% off with GAP24HR, which drops the trench seen over here to $82.60. J. Crew is running a 25% off select fall items sale with the code FALLSTYLE. Selection can be found here. LastCall is doing an extra 30% off almost everything, but pickins are kinda slim. There’s a chestnut and and black Thin Briefcase in the Dave’s Deals section of Saddleback’s website for $392 a pop. Timberland has launched a 25% off select boot styles sale, and it includes the extremely well liked Earthkeepers 6″ zip. Rue La La’s Cole Haan Sale is still going on. And finally, two Made in the USA random items: These Redwings (in black) are marked down to $150 and they ship/return free through Nordstrom… and Gilt has this Filson tote for $99, usually $225.
Aren’t the 514s the Straight fit? I believe the 513 is the slim straight.
Damn I love me some wholecuts. Thanks for the tip.
Also, I’ve never been clear on what makes something look “smart”.
The 514s were labled “slim straight” for the last 10 years… and then only in the last year or so did they just get the “straight” moniker. Right around when dudes starting wearing jeggings. They’re still pretty slim. If you’ve got some meat on your legs, the 514 is going to fit nice and slim, but not skinny.
The opposite of something that makes one look “stupid.” 😛
no spend september! AH
Damn you, Joe… I’ve been so good lately, and then you have to go and post some whole-cuts on sale… I’m still not going to get them since I’m on a spending freeze, but it wasn’t until this moment that I felt like I was missing anything. 😛
Uhh 514s? I think you may be thinking of a different fit. I am no small guy from the waist-down (Double meaning! Booya! … people still say booya right?) and the 514s fit me great.
Sooo, glasses?
I am pretty big too (6’3″, 225 pounds) and the 514s are great on me.
I like them both, but yeah the 514 is definitely roomier. The only thing I dislike about that cut is the leg opening tends to be big enough to slouch over my boots more than I’d like, whereas the 513 sits perfectly and the lower leg is slim enough to stack neatly.
When I clicked through to the BR site, a banner popped up that said “Early access” for card members. Could this mean that the 40% will be open to everyone tomorrow or this weekend?!
They’re slim…sometimes. I was in a Levis store last year and tried on 514s in a few different washes all in the same size. Each wash fit completely differently. Some were way loose, some were uncomfortably tight. I wound up getting a pair of 508s which fit slimmer than the looser 514s but less snug than the too-snug ones – even though 508s are supposedly a roomier fit than 514s.
I’ve had the same issue when ordering from Levis.com. I never do it anymore, because the same jeans in the same size won’t fit the same, so 50% of the time I have to send it back. Why, Levis, is it sooo hard to make 514s all fit the same?
Going to do my denim-head thing and suggest that if slim isn’t your preference, the 501s in Postal/black fill look really interesting, although the sizes are pretty limited.
It’s like a going thing with Levis to experiment with 501s and never produce those rinses in the more slim cuts, too. Irritating.
Haha, well played.
I think they’re quite slim in the uppers (seat/crotch/hips) but pretty darn straight down below (WODER!). They certainly aren’t what I would call slim from the knee down. They’re actually pretty wide, compared to what else is out there. All IMO, of course.
I hope you’re right. Last time they did a big “cardmembers preview”, when the discount became eligible to the general public, they tossed all their usual exclusions in there (blazers, suit jackets, “BR Picks” etc…)
Like I said, I really hope you’re right though.
Any chance you know how they fit compared to 511s? My go-to pair is a dark blue 513, and I have a white pair of 511s. I love the fit on both, with my 511s being just slightly roomier. So I’m think 514s may be similar to 511s..? Maybe…?
for my last Levis order, I got two sizes each in the 513 and 514s, just to make sure I could get one I liked. Also helped avoid the shipping charge, but just make sure you’ve got a levi’s store nearby to get free returns.
any word on fit of factory sweaters – really like http://factory.jcrew.com/mens-clothing/sweaters/lambswool/PRDOVR~05113/05113.jsp
for ref – size ‘small’ for BR merino/ RL sweaters
The AE Hanover looks like the AE Greenwich (which is still one of my favs) minus the perfs.
I’m a tall (6’5”), skinny (170 lbs.) dude and the 514’s felt a bit too baggy for me. The 511’s are my go to but I would love to try the 513’s just to have something with a little more room. Only problem is that Levi’s apparently has no intention of making the 513’s available with a 36” inseam.
511 are roomier than 513? I’m confused.
I’d be a bit leery of the Jack Spade / Rancourt boat shoes. I ordered a pair on sale earlier this year. The shoes are unquestionably beautiful, comfortable, and appear to be well made. However, the color (mine were green) bled A TON. As in, my feet looked like Shrek’s after taking them off if not wearing socks, and my socks were very green if I did wear them. Later on, the inside of one of the shoes started to self-destruct. Jack Spade was awesome about a return, but not really a product I’d recommend.
So should we go with the BR Black Cord or the Plaid blazer?
I have a pair of AE wholecuts (discontinued Fairfax), and the only thing I recommend watching out for is creasing–especially if that bugs you. I wear a 10D on several styles of last (including the #5 last used for the Fairfax), and the wholecuts creased much, much more substantially than any other AEs I’ve ever owned.
I also switched to the 513 to get the tapered leg opening. I couldn’t squeeze my calves into a 511, but the 513 fit the bill for slim and tapered without sliding into skinny jean territory.
I haven’t personally worn 511s, but I’m told that they fit like the 514 above the knee, and taper below.
I think it’s worth bearing in mind here that Levis verbal descriptors are just about worthless on their own. (see: 514s being ‘slim straight’ for a decade previous)
Hey Joe, what do you think of the Toe on the Timberland Earthkeepers 6 inch boots? I am thinking of buying them and worried they might have a larger toe than regular shoes. Do i need to upsize/downsize on these?
This. I ordered some 501s a few months back and they were tapered enough to be labeled “skinny.” I sent those back and paid more to buy a pair at JCP, where I could try them on before buying. The fit changes a lot based on which country your pair comes from, as I understand it.
514’s aren’t tappered through the leg and aren’t really slim compared to other common slim fits (alpha khaki, etc). The leg opening is quite large and doesn’t look good for stacking & cuffing.
Any Levis you’d recommend for a guy whose thighs aren’t slim enough to fit into 501s?
Uniqlo relax fit straight fit me well but only because they have stretch (which doesn’t seem to wear well) and Uniqlo seems to have dropped them.
5’10” 170 here. That would account for the fit difference.
514s are baggy for you at that height/weight? That’s interesting. They’re a straight fit. Closer than the 501 even, and the 501 is classic.
To be fair, alphas are REALLY slim. Like, tube socks on some of us slim. But I can see why a straight fit jean wouldn’t look right cuffing (I’m not a stacker and cuffer personally, but yeah, a taper would look best there, instead of a pair of bagels blowing in the wind.
what is the difference between http://factory.jcrew.com/mens-clothing/suiting/PRDOVR~05143/05143.jsp and http://factory.jcrew.com/mens-clothing/suiting/PRDOVR~47226/47226.jsp?color_name=charcoal?
the fabric…the one on sale is a blend while the more expensive jacket is 100% wool
im new to the suit game so im guessing the wool one is better? is their really that much of a difference?
I’d say it’s a little more than just the fabric blend.
A flannel suit jacket is going to have more of a brushed & soft hand-feel to it. More wintery. It might not feel right in late spring or summer. It’s not tweed by any stretch, but flannel suiting is usually reserved for fall and winter. Haven’t seen this new one in person yet though.
The plain ol’ wool option is a year round fabric. And that one has a bit of texture to it thanks to the weave. More over here in a review of the navy: https://dappered.com/2012/07/in-person-j-crew-factory-thompson-worsted-wool-suit/
If it’s your first (or second) suit, I’d go with the regular wool and save the flannel for a little further on down the road.
Trying out the STF 501s since my thigh to waist ratio does not agree with even the relaxed fit jeans (relaxed straight look like skinny jeans on me and no way I’m going loose fit…)
I’m in the same boat. 6’1″ and 210 lbs. and 514s are like sails on me. I wear 511s and 513s, even having to size down in certain washes. Goes to show how important fitting rooms are.
I have a pair of 514 in black. They fit straight til the knee then become “loose” not baggy but loose.
How does the Thompson fit in comparison to the Ludlow?
Just got in a Gap wool scout belt. Not the highest quality wool but awesome fall/winter belt. My new go to! Solid nylon backing holds it together.
