GAP inc’s 35% – 30% off Thank You Sale

September 24, 2013 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Here's why.

THANKYOU = 35% off at BananaRepublic, Gap, 30% off at OldNavy

UPDATE: Looks like they’ve extended this deal on B.R. through today, 9/25, with the code BRSHOP35. Meanwhile, over on GAP, they’re offering 40% off full priced styles (with exclusions) with GAP24HR.

Do bigger discounts roll around? Sure. Many on the BR mailing list might even get a 40% off one item code in their inboxes tomorrow. Word is there have been some 40% off coupons getting handed out with in-store purchases at BR as well. But the combination of new arrivals, the new season, the cross-brand promotion, and the fact that it works on sale items means it’s time for a look.

Standard exclusions apply. So, no blazers or suiting at BR. Shipping kicks in at $50 pre-code. THANKYOU expires today, 9/24/13.

B.R. Donegal Topcoat – $193.70 ($298)

BR donnegal coat

Pohhhhhh-tential. BR’s winter outwear is pretty consistent. They fit great, and they’re… not always the thickest things. Crazy-warm is not how many (any?) would describe their outerwear. 72% wool with the rest being mainly nylon. Know that the placket is covered, so if you’re not a fan of the ultra-sleek no-buttons down the front look, skip it.

BR Grey Cotton Vest – $84.50 ($130)

BR Vest

One of the best waistcoats out there. Cotton back, so you don’t have to deal with the shiny poly if that’s not your thing. These do run really trim, and a touch on the short side. A 38R on my 5’10” / 170 pound frame was just a touch too short, while a 40R was boxy and a little too long.

B.R. Wool Camel Trench – $193.70 ($298)

BR Wool Trench

80% wool and 20% nylon. Hmmm. Efforting an in-person look at this one, but it’s a new arrival. Not everyone likes the wool trench look, but it can work for plenty.

BR Extra Fine Merino V-Neck Sweater – $45.18 ($69.50)

gap fine merino

Banana Republic’s flagship sweater. 100% extra-fine merino wool, so the fabric is substantial, but still nice and smooth. A boatload of colors to choose from. V is neither too shallow nor dips too far. You might want to consider sizing down. That’s a small on the left, and a medium on the right. Either would have worked.

B.R. Vintage Straight 5-Pocket Cords – $45.18 ($69.50)

vintage straight cords

The winterized version of the well loved vintage-straight 5 pocket canvas style pant from the spring + summer seasons. It’s a perfect fit for many of us who have some muscle on our legs. Slim and straight without being constricting. UPDATE: Check that, these are part of the dreaded “BR Picks” exclusions. So, the code won’t work. Hat tip to Hugh in the comments for pointing this out.

GAP Striped Web Belt – $12.97 ($19.95)

GAP belt web

Made in the USA. Plenty of color options. Mega cheap and perfect for tipping a free shipping balance. These do run WAY long though, but since it’s a web belt, you can easy trim the end.

GAP 1969 Selvedge Straight Fit Jeans – $32.49 ($89.99)

GAP selvedge clearance

Already on clearance and the code works. 33 reviews, 4.5 out of 5 stars. Lots of sizes. Note that these are Dry Clean Only. Thanks to Capri in the comments for pointing that out.

GAP Slub Pocket Tee – $14.94 ($26.95)

GAP pocket slub tee

Another item that’s already marked down and once the code is applied it drifts into mega cheap territory. Proof that you can be dressed way down but not look like you just rolled out of bed. Slub weave + stripes + chest pocket = a shirt with a little more purpose but still sharper than a graphic tee.

GAP Wool Belt – $16.22 ($24.95)

GAP wool belts

Baaaaaa.

GAP Slub Henley – $16.89 ($29.95)

GAP slub henleys

Another slubbed casual long sleeve for fall. Might want to size down. Shown above: Medium on the left, small on the right. Fabric is lightweight but doesn’t feel flimsy. Not a bad layering basic.

 Waxed Cotton Jacket – $83.20 ($128)

gap waxed jacket

Struck out on trying to find this thing in-store, BUT… the one review on GAP’s website is helpful. It’s not waxed, but instead coated with acrylic to give it a waxed-like feel. That’s not that unusual for a cheap jacket to mimick waxed coating without, y’know… actual wax. Looks like they just rolled out the brown-tone “Modern Bronze” color, but that’s only available online.

GAP Washed Woven Belt – $9.74 ($24.99)

GAP washed belt

Another item you can carry over from summer and into the colder months. Casual, brings a bit of color to your outfit, but with a blazer or jacket it’s going to stay hidden most of the time. That washed-out greyish blue is a really safe play.

Lambswool blend striped rugby sweater – $35.72 ($59.50)

gap lambswool rugby sweater

Lambswool, big fat rugby stripes, and in the mid $30s. Didn’t catch this one in person since it’s a brand new arrival, but the 80% lambswool / 20% nylon blend might have potential. Wool + a small dose of nylon seems to work well together every so often. But, who knows for sure. Ships free.

GAP Basic Leather Belt – $19.47 ($29.95)

gapbelts

An essential that doesn’t disappoint. One of the best out there for the price. Perfect buckle.

For Her: Heritage Cowl Neck Top – $25.68 ($39.50)

for her cowl

Awwoooga.

The 35% off at BananaRepublic.com, Gap.com, and 30% off at OldNavy.com code THANKYOU expires today, 9/24/13. Usual exclusions apply, so once again, no blazers or suit jackets on this one.

$32.50 for Raw Selvage at GAP quality? Can’t beat. Only thing I’m sad about is I’m too broke to afford more than one pair. Just ordered my size 33×30 — remember to get true-to-size on the length, unless you want a ridiculous length that you’ll need to either get hemmed (more money) or have to cuff.

Just ordered 4 different sizes of the selvedge jeans because I remember I couldn’t find/figure out my size in the outlet store last time. Free shipping, free returns. Thanks Joe!

  3. Dominic says

    September 24, 2013 at 6:42 AM

Everything I try on from the GAP is now one size bigger than my regular size.

Gap also just started there GQ collaboration today. Doesn’t look like the code works on these pieces though.

  5. drbhrb says

    September 24, 2013 at 6:49 AM

    They are not raw

  6. Capri says

    September 24, 2013 at 7:07 AM

I’ve heard horror stories from GAP employees about the raw selvedge. One’s worker’s husband washed them in delicate and hung dried them, yet the indigo was blotchy all over the jeans. It says “dry clean only” on the tag so just beware.

I originally bought these but exchanged them for the GAP Japanese selvedge on sale. The Japanese selvedge ones are washable (or soakable, however you prefer to wash selvedge).

Thanks so much for this comment. Jeans that are dry clean only??? Ridiculous.

  8. Hugh says

    September 24, 2013 at 7:22 AM

The promo code doesn’t work with the BR cord pants, since their pinned as a “BR PICKS,” which are excluded from the discount. Made me very, very sad.

  9. Raymond says

    September 24, 2013 at 7:44 AM

Yup, got the same error. Dang, was looking forward to getting some cords.

  10. AlwaysBeenTim says

    September 24, 2013 at 7:55 AM

I’m shocked that they are doing that again. Last year’s collection was overpriced and not very interesting. It seemed that everything they did ended up in clearance (and even then it was overpriced)

I’m looking at this year’s collection and it seems to be even worse. Is it just me?

  11. Ben W says

    September 24, 2013 at 7:55 AM

My 32×30 actual size always ends up being a bit small. My last Gap jeans in that size fit right up until I washed them. Guess there’s a high chance of a return on these, considering they’ll never be washed. Dang impulse buy!

On the bright side, I got some BR chinos for ~$23. They let me combine the 35% on the jeans with 40% BR sale items.

  12. Joe says

    September 24, 2013 at 8:16 AM

DAMN. This might have happened overnight. Sorry about that. Updated above. Not a fan of the “BR Picks” exclusions.

  13. Ryan N says

    September 24, 2013 at 8:57 AM

“BR Picks” = “BR Picks These To Be Excluded From Sales”

  14. Alexander Sollie says

    September 24, 2013 at 9:06 AM

This sale can stack with the 25% off code you get for signing up for emails from them. Go to the gap.com site, scroll down a bit, and find the “DON’T MISS OUT ON… 25% OFF” box. This will bring you to a total of 51% off.

  15. Joe says

    September 24, 2013 at 9:14 AM

    Precisely.

  16. Patrick Snyder says

    September 24, 2013 at 9:43 AM

I picked up one of those Henley’s. Looks and feels good, but it is incredibly lightweight, like I am pretty concerned it will be a cropped top after a wash.

  17. Sigtweed & Corduroy says

    September 24, 2013 at 10:36 AM

The last jacket I bought from Gap was this way too. Very tight in the arms (I have big arms but still) and huge and boxy in the body, it was totally wack.

  18. xeren says

    September 24, 2013 at 11:16 AM

dang, I bought this looking for a waxed jacket- your info combined with the fact that it’s not actually waxed means I’m cancelling my order.

  19. Forrest Sobieszczyk says

    September 24, 2013 at 12:32 PM

Selvedge has nothing to do with how they are washed. The combination of being raw and sanforized/unsanforized does impact how they respond to washing. Denim can be raw without being selvedge; and can be selvedge without being raw.

Sounds like the dry clean only one just use some really, really low quality dye.

  20. xeren says

    September 24, 2013 at 12:47 PM

Yeah, I’m specifically look for a waxed jacket to see how I like them. I ordered the J Crew field jacket as well, but it’s much more expensive. I was hoping I would like the Gap one better, but if it’s not even waxed, I guess that limits my options. I really don’t want to spend the money on a barbour just yet.

  21. dackman says

    September 24, 2013 at 1:51 PM

Correct you are, had to dig through my “other” email’s junk box but found it and stacked it!

Got a couple pairs of the GAP Lived-In Straight Chinos and a fleece shawl collar cardigan for $29 each. Just had another pair of the Lived-In Straight delivered last week and am loving the fit.

  22. Capri says

    September 24, 2013 at 3:24 PM

Indeed… selvedge (aka self-edge) refers to the edging on the jeans. It does sound like the indigo dye might not be up to par on these. I do know they are not sanforized for this particular jean since I emailed their customer service about it. Basically, don’t wash these jeans unless you want them to shrink significantly while having bad dye runoffs.

I’ve found that usually most raw jeans are selvedge while I’ve seen several selvedge jeans that are not raw.

  23. Bosco Nguyen says

    September 24, 2013 at 4:09 PM

It doesn’t let me add the code online but I walked in a B&M and one of the sales rep added the 35% discount for me.

  24. coachmcguirk says

    September 24, 2013 at 6:51 PM

Just a comment on the raw denim tag saying Dry Clean Only. Im on my 3rd pair of raw denim from Gap since they started offering it 4-5 years ago – they wash just like any other pair of raw denim I own. They will fade, they will lose indigo, etc. They do not need to be dry cleaned.

The reason the tag says Dry Clean Only is “protect” themselves for those who dont know about raw denim. So even though they are sanforized, they will shrink some. And with every wash, some more indigo will be lost. Unless you Dry Clean – then they will keep looking the exact same

  27. drocpsu says

    September 25, 2013 at 2:32 PM

but….dry clean only?? Who wants to dry clean their jeans? Getting them cleaned like 3 times will cost more money than the jeans themselves.

  28. drocpsu says

    September 25, 2013 at 2:35 PM

It’s funny to me that those fake waxed-jackets also have fake rifle stock shoulder pads on them.

  29. AlwaysBeenTim says

    September 25, 2013 at 3:21 PM

I’m sure the cardigan looks nice in person, I didn’t have any problems with the build quality of last year’s clothes either but I have seen about half a dozen really nice grey shawl-collar cardigans this season. I bought a nice one for $30 a month ago. So $70 for this one? Not so much for me, thank you.

I thought it was the same thing, last year. They mostly had products that were so on-trend that every other store had them too. In fact, Gap usually had already released one months earlier. The only difference is that it’s 20-40% more expensive and you can’t get it on sale.

And everything that isn’t exactly on trend is both overpriced and ridiculous. $45 for a standard sweatshirt with a 70’s rainbow graphic on it? Really?

  30. Peter says

Just wanted to add my 2 cents in case anyone is still looking. I ordered the waxed jacket in M. I’m 6 foot, 175 with wide shoulders, and it fits me well. I will second Jeff’s comment on the material though – it is very stiff. I have some hope that it will relax given time, and since I got it on sale for $65, I’m going to keep it to find out. If the material loosens up, I think it is well worth the price, as it appears water-resistant, is lined, and the style (in grey) rides the line between classy and casual so I think it could be worn to work or to the pub.
