This might make a run at “Sweat” and “Refresh” for the title of best Bespoke Post box of 2013.
But first, now is a really good time to remind everyone that sometimes Bespoke Post will run not one, but two boxes in any given month. Plenty of us got an email showcasing “Aces.” Nice, but 360 chips isn’t a lot. Yet it’d make for a nice extra set to have on hand if you’re accustomed to holding poker nights with more than a handful of players. It’s probably selling decently, but not nearly as well as the sold-out-on-day-one “Frontier” box. Which thankfully they’re making more of, and will ship in September if you’re still interested.
Originally named for one of the most famous American Authors ever, the “bell tolled
The French-made pocket knife from Opinel is all kinds of right & simple. So much so that it once was displayed along with a Rolex and a Porsche 911 in a museum exhibit titled: “The 100 Most Beautiful Products in the World“. The handle is surprisingly light weight, but it’s very sturdy overall. The 3.25” stainless steel blade is plenty of edge. Plus, the locking collar (just spin it to keep the blade in place) is a nifty safety feature.
Second in terms of lethality would be the incredibly weighty steel bottle opener from Machine Era Co. Forget the stupid flimsy bottle openers in the middle of your kitchen shears. Reach for this next time. The whale engraving is masculine-artsy, and it’s selling for almost $40 (wow) on the Machine Era Co. site.
Third in deadliness is the fountain pen from Kaweco. (It gets a higher ranking if you posses the skill of one Martin Blank.) For a lot of us, this’ll be the first fountain pen in the collection. And it’s a nice starter. Plastic, lightweight but not disposable… this thing looks great, travels well, and it writes with more purpose than a crummy bic stic ever could. Just 4.1 inches when capped and they’ve included six ink refills.
The final item would be hard to weaponize (unless you’re J. Bourne) but it does a hell of a job helping you disconnect from the noise of electronics and the web. Think of the 5″x8.25″ soft cover notebook from Poppin as a tablet device, but without all the distractions of Twitter and Facebook. Almost 200 ruled pages, a perfect size for a briefcase or messenger bag, a ribbon bookmark and even a small storage pouch on the inside of the back cover. Use this notebook the next time you want to get some focused brainstorming done. All of the idea-recording-capabilities, yet none of the temptation to check your email.
