$170 suits, Madras, & Win a $5k watch – The Thursday Handful

July 25, 2013 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

J. Crew: Extra 40% off Sale items w/ STYLE40

jcrew 40 off trio

The Picks: Indian Cotton Plaid Shirt – $23.99 ($75),  Italian Chino Ludlow Center Vent Suit Jacket + Pant = $253 – $261 ($456), Cashmere V-Neck in Heather Sea – $59.40 FINAL ($225)

C’monnnnnnn Irish Linen Suit jacket no wammies no wammies no wammies STOP! AWWWW DAMMIT IT’S STILL NOT IN THE SALE SECTION.  Well, the code doesn’t expires until August 4th, and the Irish Linen pants are still in there, so, here’s to hoping. But the Italian Chino is in the sale section (scroll down here, you need to select the center vent jacket). Free shipping now kicks in at $100.

FRIDAY UPDATE: There was a bit of a change to the items in the sale section overnight. For those who have purchased a Ludlow before, check your inbox. J. Crew just sent out some single-user, one time use codes that are good for 30% off Ludlow Summer suiting. Chino, Irish Linen (!!!), Italian Linen Wool, etc… But not everyone got these, and again, they’re one time use. Anyway, that means what summer suiting was in the sale section has since been removed.

Need Supply Co.: Extra 20% off Sale w/ 20MORE

needsupcoextra20

The Picks: Billykirk Card Case – $47.99 ($95),  Sperry Captain’s Oxford – $55.99 ($95)

Need Supply Co is awfully hipsterish in their imagery (beards! tats! vacant stares of melancholy!), but they do carry some well made goods. Billy Kirk Case is especially tempting and made in the USA. Meanwhile… those shoes. They’re strangely intriguing. In a Centaur kinda way. Something obviously not right, but that makes ’em great (or, just hideous to others). Handsewn. NubuckSuede + Leather = Would you wear it? (Here’s a slightly more subtle boat-shoe version)

Banana Republic: 35% off w/ BRSPLASH

br funky 35 off sale

The Picks: Heritage Partially Lined Madras Blazer – $110.49 ($325), Tailored Cotton/Linen Suit Jacket & Matching Pant – $142.99 ($380), Luxe Touch Rugby Polo – $16.24 ($49.50)

This is a weird one, because while the usual exclusions are right there in the fine print (suit jackets, blazers etc…) the code seems to work as long as the item is already marked down and in the sale section. … ? … So there are exclusions to the exclusions perhaps, and creating a double negative and thus, making the blazers + suiting in sale up for grabs? Who knows. But that Madras blazer is plenty nice, being that it’is only partially lined. Nice fabric too. Discount jumps to 40% off if you use a GAP inc. credit card.

UPDATE: Looks like suits and blazers, even if they already are on sale, are back to being excluded. Dang.

Hautelook: Slim Suiting Event

DKNY Suiting at HL

The Picks: DKNY Dekalb light grey wool suit – $169.00, DKNY Charcoal (mini check?) wool suit – $169.00 , DKNY Dekalb Navy Striped Suit – $169.00

Hautelook is the flash-sale site owned and operated by Nordstrom, and it’s one of the nicer ones. But like all of these flash sale sites, you have to hand over your email to sign up. Also, know the return policy (HL = decent). For budget suiting, DKNY hits a lot of solid points: Neither too tight nor too boxy, and the shoulder pads aren’t nearly as bulky as the Hilfiger suits which are also available. You’ll need some tailoring done, but it’s not a bad template to work with. DKNY suits usually run in the mid $200s at Macy’s when deeply discounted.

Bespoke Post: “Upgrade your Wrist” contest to win a Baume & Mercier

BespokeUpgradeWatchContest

Well that’s something. Bespoke Post is running this “Upgrade your Wrist” contest, and three winners will get to choose their favorite watch from the three above. Pretty straight forward with signing up. You just hand over an email address.

The guys at Bespoke Post contacted us recently and said: “Hey, do you want a specific link/url that’ll get the Dappered community two entries with just one sign up instead of one?” … Uh. Sure? So here’s that link. And no, Dappered doesn’t get anything out it if you sign up through that Dappered specific link. None of the Dappered team can even win since we work with Bespoke Post for those monthly giveaways.  Rules are over here, and it looks like your email goes on a mailing list (or two…) and then you can opt out of those emails later on. Small price to pay for some, others, maybe not.

The Friday Polydactyly Addition: 40% off everything at J. Crew Factory

Factory Thompson Glenn Plaid

The Picks: The New Thompson Navy Glen Plaid – $255.00 ($426)

Mid $200s for a Thompson is not mind blowing, but it’s decent. And with the new MSRP of $426 being so high, waiting for 50% off would get you down to $213. But, it might be time to get a jump on fall suiting, get it to your tailor, and have it at the ready. Maybe. Wool poly blend on this one.

Bonobos is offering 25% off their really nice Travel Jeans with the code GOINGPLACES25. Code expires 7/28. Ledbury has a summer sale going on… still plenty expensive. Ralph Lauren is taking an extra 40% off select items that are marked on their site. J. Press York Street has launched a summer sale if you want to channel some inner prep. Nice made in the USA ribbon belts for around $20. Watch out for final sale, and thanks to Scott for the tip. Gilt has an Android sale going on. It’s Android, so, prepare for some funkiness. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is still on, with a few new items added daily.

Uh, they’re asking for an email address and saying the winners will be announced via Facebook and Twitter. Are they planning on publicly posting the winner’s email or what?

I should have put “posted without comment”…

Just tried to score the linen/cotten suit at BR. No dice on the BRSPLASH code working for the blazer =(

Dang, I had my eye on the J Crew shirt but no mediums available (and the $8.95 shipping is disheartening as well)

The modern fit they carry is the same one at Men’s Wearhouse. I hear it is a true half-canvas (ie not just in the lapels). However, if you’re still skeptical, call your local MW and ask if they have any Jack Victor suits in stock and see it in person.

oh man…..if only I could win one of those watches. That would be awesome. Which reminds me, I need to go look back to looking at the cheap watch post from yesterday. haha

Question about the Hautelook sale – Are the prices listed for full suits? This would be perfect for my brother-in-law, who’s looking to get a light gray suit for his upcoming wedding. Too bad he’s out of town this week to be able to check this out.

  11. Joe says

    July 25, 2013 at 1:07 PM

Nope, they won’t be publicly posting the winner’s email. They’ll contact the winners first via email, then get their names, then announce. That time/date for announcing is hours after the contest closes, so, I’m guessing that’s best-case scenario that they have winner info by then.

  12. Joe says

    July 25, 2013 at 1:09 PM

Indeed, yes, and it looks like sizes really started to move quickly, so it might be a lost cause at this point. No worries though. DKNY suits are real good, but not mindblowing by any stretch.

^ Proof that once you near retirement age, you can pretty much do whatever you want. I’d look like a jackass wearing this same getup, this guy is actually kind of rocking it.

Re: BR Tailored linen suit. I’m getting $188.48 for the pants and jacket in my checkout cart with the BRSPLASH code. Is that $142.99 price with the 40% off Gap card usage or if the 35% is off the jacket too?

  16. Joe says

    July 25, 2013 at 2:56 PM

That’s the price you’d get if the code doesn’t apply to the jacket. Wonder if they changed something in their system?

  17. Galcobar says

    July 25, 2013 at 3:37 PM

I think they did correct the unexcluded exclusion — I ran the code through and it did not change the $129.99 price on that chino suit jacket.

  18. rohmen says

    July 25, 2013 at 3:51 PM

I picked up two DKNY suits when I changed jobs a year and a half ago and needed suits on the quick. They fit fairly well for the price point and have held up okay (I wear each of them at least once a week), though I dry clean them extremely sparingly since they’re fused. The navy suit has developed a few noticeable shinny spots on my right pants leg, but I do cross my left leg over my right a lot while sitting.

I also picked up a Tommy Hilfiger, which has decent enough material and fit through the body and pant, but definitely suffers from bulky shoulder pads as Joe notes.

If I had it to do over again, I would have purchased two suitsupply suits rather than 2 DKNY and 1 Tommy (live and learn), but the DKNY will get a person by fairly well considering the price point. Especially if you only intend to use the suit for the occasional wedding or special event.

  20. rnjbond says

    July 25, 2013 at 5:38 PM

okay, I’m confused, how could you have afforded two suitsupply suits for the price of three DKNY/Tommy suits? $469 x 2 > $200 x 3

  21. ari says

    July 25, 2013 at 5:47 PM

he may of paid a fair deal more than 200 is my guess

  22. Bill S says

When you use a Banana Republic credit card the 40% applies to everything – no exclusions. On Wednesday I picked up a $750 Monogram blue pinstripe suit for les than $375 by stacking another 15% off code. Absolutely beautiful suit. Fits like it was made for me. And the fabric and finish are stunning. They have a Monogram toupe wool suit that is also stunning that I am waiting to pounce on. 40% off isn’t good enough anymore although, IMHO, they are worth $450 when their suits fit so well off the rack and require no tailoring.

  23. rohmen says

    July 26, 2013 at 7:19 AM

I picked up the DKNY suits from Macy’s, with the price around $300 or so each after tailoring. The Tommy was around $225 with tailoring. Adding that up, I would have been pretty close to two Napoli fit suits at suit supply. I can walk out the door at suitsupply in a 38R with no tailoring needed besides pants hemming.

My point though is that buying one good quality suit is sometimes a better move than buying two passable quality suits

    July 26, 2013 at 10:23 AM

Since the main post hasn’t been updated yet, I’ll just say here:

The glen plaid Thompson suit from J.Crew Factory is back down to a sane price – $268 MSRP and $160 with the current 40% off sale. Seems like the previous high price must have been an error of some sort.

Those watches are super smooth! I’m not familiar with the company/brand, but they are reminding me quite a little bit of a few Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatics. The prices (and I’m presuming the quality? – dunno) are certainly on different levels, and I may have the which-reminds-one-of-the-other backwards for those in-the-know, but to me when I saw this post on my phone screen, I initially thought they were Hamiltons:

If any of you lucky few with the ludlow code aren’t planning on using it…my hand’s in the air.
(It would seem my final-sale-discount-purchase of the English Birds-eye tweed ludlow didn’t qualify me for that code…

BRSPLASH (with BR card) is working on blazers.

  28. Nicholas Fasolt says

In the same boat, the Ludlow Chino I bought on sale didn’t qualify me either.
