Weiss Watch Co. Built in the USA Mechanical Field Watch – $795.00
What is “The Damn”? The Damn is a random collection of things that may or may not fall within the usual Dappered price range. All that is required of the subject is the possibility it can elicit a strong, often verbalized, positive response from a viewer. You decide whether or not it is worthy of such distinction by casting your vote.
Mechanical movement is a manually wound Caliber 6497 comprised of over 60 Swiss parts which is assembled, finished, and encased here in the U.S. by Cameron Weiss, their Swiss trained & certified watchmaker. Weiss also designed the dial, case, and strap, all of which are manufactured here in the states. 41.5 mm w/out the crown, domed sapphire crystal on the front and sapphire exhibition caseback. Production is limited to 500 pieces.

Could the company name be any bigger?
Certainly not a bad looking watch, but for that price tag, you can bet your sweet, sweeeeeeeeet, swwweee- err, you can bet I’d be headed in a different direction.
the “damn” is the size of that logo, in a bad way
I love the look, but the logo’s just too big. Sorry, not damn.
Not in a good way, at least.
The price is very reasonable, especially when Sinola is trying to pass off quartz watches at the same price.
The dial is what kills it for me. The name is way too large.
I’d say only Damn worthy because of the price…
The price isn’t bad, nor is the overall style. That logo, though, is hideous and way too large. The chassis looks rough cast (although I think it is a brushed finish) with a shiny bezel, ultimately looks cheap. Either polish the whole thing or use a brushed finish for the whole watch.
I’m with the consensus here, the watch looks great…… Except the logo, it kills the watch
Sorta my original reaction as well. Really like the overall look/fact they’re a small brand and working hard here in the states. Going to keep an eye on them for future releases.
You, sir, are opening a can of worms…
without a doubt, if they shrunk the logo, I would have no problem buying this without a second thought. Hopefully they’ll fix this later on.
Had a chance to try one on at the SF 111 Minna popup. Before, same thoughts about the logo (too damn big) but after trying one on… its not nearly as damn big as it looks in photos. My vote — Daaaaaamn! http://www.flickr.com/photos/shawncalhoun/9137330904/
I like the size of the face and hands and numbers. The dial looks very clean and I see absolutely no problem with the logo. For a mechanical watch the price is ridiculously low, especially when compared to shinola or fossil. I would buy this watch in a minute. In fact, I think I will. I would like to see him build some higher end watches. He has worked on some of my higher end watches and I was very pleased. I saw a chronograph of his and it was extremely nice.
Not really. Self-wound seems especially silly — at least automatic has a kind of “ooooh” factor that comes with the whole recharged-by-motion thing. But, yeah, quartz is cheaper and more accurate. It’s just less traditional and less (potentially) interesting in terms of construction… though a tiny little quartz tuning fork is cool in its own way.
I’d hit it
No go on the ‘damn’ for me. I think Christoper Ward offers better looking mechanical watches for the same price. The logo on this is just too big and for $800, I’d expect a better band.
Man, if that logo was just a liiiiiiiiitle bit smaller. Here, I fixed it for you.

Ehh I would prefer a more traditional flieger style watch for that price. A steinhart w no logo can be had for less than $500 w the same movement. For $800 you can cop one from one of the original makers of WWII german pilot watches like laco or stowa.

Wait its not even an automatic? Manual wind seems like too much work
Nice! Thanks for this Shawn.
All good Joe! If you get a chance, check out what these folks are doing up close. They really are making a hell of a watch.
Where do I enter to win it?
Not Damn because:
1. logo as mentioned by everyone else.
2. price is $200 too much.
3. design, while nice, is really just a copy of military watches from the 20’s and 30’s (Omega, et..), and doesn’t bring anything new to the table.
I do like that it’s a product of the USA and will be looking for better options from Weiss in the future.
While admittedly nice looking, the logo is far too big to be an acceptable adornment to my wrist.
Both the logo and the price kill it for me. There are several 100% Swiss made mechanical watches available for much less than this, without having a massive logo thrown in your face
The only practical benefit is that you never have to replace the battery. Having the watch opened to replace the battery, and not sealed back up properly afterwards, is a common source of water damage to quartz movements. But, Citizen eco-drive has a workaround for this – a solar rechargeable battery that never needs replacing. You get all the practical benefits of mechanical but the superior time-keeping of quartz.
Mechanicals require a lot more craftsmanship. That makes them cooler fashion-wise. I think a lot of their resurgence in popularity is due to the fact that they are a throw-back item in a digital age. Everyone carries a cell phone around with them these days, so you don’t really need a watch to tell time. If you’re going to wear an obsolete piece of tech on your wrist, might as well go all the way.
I like it. I’m not big on logos but that one doesn’t bother me and unlike the majority, I don’t find it too oversized. The watch itself is a little big for me – I have small wrists and generally feel that watches 40mm and smaller are better for me. But, if I were a little bigger, I jump on this. It’s not a bad price for a US made mechanical with a lot of style.
Back: Hawt damn. Front: LOGO!!!!!!!
They really fucked it up with that logo.
Try “gone”. I prefer a clean, minimalist look. That is one of the big appeals of the Maratac Pilot, which has quite a cult following.
The Maratac is HUGE. Logos can be tastefully executed. Sterile dials aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.
What concerns me most about this watch is the striking resemblance all the components bear to generic, Chinese-made parts sold by the parts house Otto Frei. Are the parts really made in the USA as they claim? I have purchased plenty of the O Frei parts and they are definitely made in China.
Matthew, what concerns me most is that your unfounded lies, have not been researched and border on malicious slander. My wife and I personally know Mr. Weiss and own watches designed and made by him. He also maintains our timepieces. He has always been honest, truthful and forthright with us. He has never attempted to mislead us. All of our dealings with him have been of the highest moral and ethical standards. I find your blatant accusations to be repugnant. I feel that you have overstepped the bounds and rules of this board and therefore your comments should be taken down.
