READY FOR THE WEEKEND:
I can’t tell if this is practical or just a novelty item. On first appraisal, this seems rather smart. But is there someplace to stash the portable iron? Specs and a how-it-works video can be found over here.
THE WELL DRESSED GIZMO: I would be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in one of these.
MANNERS: We really need to cultivate more of those these days. It’s not just an interwebs thing. The Art Of Manliness posted a remarkably made-for-these-times collection of rules for conversation. Here’s the rub: they’re from 1875. And we need them now more than ever. For the record, I’m guilty of breaking #3 but I’m getting way better at #10.
DAPPERED IN ACTION:
Dappered reader Kyle T was inspired by this Dappered post to rejuvenate this pair of leather derby shoes. This is pretty impressive and a great way to work style on a budge. You can see enlarged photos here and here.
GASPING FOR BREATH: This right here…there are few words. But all of them are from the world of snark. Also, the amount of denial going on here is staggering.
PERSPECTIVE: Uncle Sam was playing Big Brother long before Orwell went there.
ASK A WOMAN? I so very much want to know how Dappered’s own Beth would have dealt with this one.
STONE COLD HIPSTERS:
Paris designer Leo Caillard wondered what some of history’s more famous sculpted figures might look like in a modern context. Turns out, they look pretty Wiiliamsburg-esue. Thanks to reader David L who spotted this just about the same time I did. You really need to see the whole gallery.
BLOOMBERG’S FOLLIES: Remember that comment about the nanny state a couple weeks ago? New York City’s Mayor is doing all he can, and honestly, it’s pretty sad when it’s not funny. As is the case with his latest move which seems to come straight outta Portlandia. (And for the record, composting is good. Forced composting? Not so much.)
EVEN THE MAN OF STEEL HAS CRAPTACULAR DAYS:
.
SPEAKING OF SUPERMEN: What have you accomplished today? Goals anyone?
LESS IS MORE: Next time you grab for that third draft at the bar or that extra serving of pasta on a non-work out day, try and remember to keep this in the back of your mind. I joke, but for those of us with a family history of dementia, it’s not that funny.
INCOMING!
Need something else to read?
- Speaking of stone classics? Any new additions to list list?
- Because, please. If there’s one thing you really should not mess up, it’s this. OK, there are lots of them, but really, if you’re making people’s eyes all sorts of crazy, that’s not good.

It doesn’t matter who you are, you shouldn’t be wearing them at night.

I really enjoy this site. It’s one of the very few sites I visit frequently where I cannot immediately identify the political or ideological leanings of the writers (at least on topics other than style), which, to me, is a rare and valuable thing. I am a political consultant by trade, so I am all for voicing your opinion however you see fit. I would just like you guys to know that you are one of the few places I turn to for a break from policy talk, and would love it if it would stay like that.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. I was just sitting here trying to figure out how I am going to secure a donation from a PAC I am completely ideologically opposed to, turned to this site for a break, and found that Bloomberg bit. Just rubbed me the wrong way, please carry on.
Also, that bag is pretty rad.
Did the duffle bag people up their price after the increase in traffic thanks to the Gizmodo article? Or was there some sort of introductory pricing that expired?
(The comments in the article mentions a price of $99, but the website lists it at $149.)
I live in Portland, which has been doing the mandatory composting for several years and I lived in San Francisco when they introduced the pilot program that has since convinced all the other cities to do it. I know that many see this as standard hippy, liberal, “nannystate” BS but, in actuality, it saves money for the city by cutting down how much a city throws away and offers a possible revenue stream without raising taxes. Cutting government and reducing the need for taxes? Most cities will see that as a win-win and you are going to be seeing more and more do this. Guaranteed.
What he said.
We should learn to value and judge on their merits concrete ideas rather than abstract concepts. Sure, “personal freedom” is a great concept, but if ones personal freedom erodes the shared resources of the public, then ideas that stop that from happening are needed, even if “personal freedom” is given up. But again, it’s important to judge and evaluate things on a case-by-case basis and not just throw out loaded terms like “nanny state” each and every time we’re asked to curb or alter behavior.
The weekender duffle bag is Sold Out. According to their site.
Upvote +1000. I can’t even visit tech blogs without being bombarded by someone’s political commentary or ideology. It seems that every site, once they get enough readers about one topic, decides that their opinion on society/politics is just as valuable and decides to let fly.
Dappered is generally a respite from that crap, which is one of the reasons I enjoy it.
It’s the Dappered Effect!
