$170 Goodyear Monks, BR’s Big Sale, & More – The Thursday Handful

June 20, 2013 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

Charles Tyrwhitt: Summer Sale (including goodyear welted shoes)

CT Shoes

The Picks ( all prices include 10% off code TYR23B ): Suede Semi-Brogue – $179.10, Brown Leather Semi-Brogue – $179.10, Black Single Monk Strap – $179.10, Burgundy Double Monk Strap – $206.10

Massive hat-tip to Chris B. for this one. The Shoes that shirt-maker Charles Tyrwhitt carries are Goodyear welted. Rumor has it, some of the models might be made by Loake. Bottom line: all signs point to promising quality. But there’s a bit of a catch: They’re noticeably less expensive on their U.K. Site. For example:

  • U.S. Site: Brown semi-brogue shoes – $179.10 w/ TYR23B (10% off)
  • U.K. Site: Brown semi-brogue shoes – $152.93 (£99. conversion here)

BUT WAIT! Unfortunately, it gets complicated. There’s more to consider. Shipping from the U.K. site to the U.S. is $21.59 (£13.94). U.S. shipping for that same pair of shoes is $14.95.

Total with shipping from U.K. site is $174.52
Total with shipping from U.S. site + 10% off code is $194.05

And then what about returns? You’re on the hook for return postage if you buy from the U.K. site, and shipping to the U.K. can get pricey. Returns are free on the U.S. side. So, plan accordingly. And now, my head hurts.

UPDATE: Great call by a few of you guys in the comments. Beware currency conversion charges and other fees if you go the U.K. route.

Banana Republic: Summer Sale + Extra 10% off for cardholders w/ BRCARD

BR Summer Sale

The Picks: Vintage Straight 5-Pocket pant in Blue or Stone – $39.99 ($79.50), Slub Knit Pocket Polo – $29.99 – $32.99, Slim Fit Linen Button Down – $34.99 ($69.50), Chest Stripe Textured Polo – $29.99

Probably deserves its own post, but… the brain still hurts after that Charles Tyrwhitt breakdown. Those 5-pockets are a great way to get out of jeans in the summer. Size down on the polos. Fantastic fit after you do that. Feels weird not using a code, but a good chunk is on sale for fair prices and there’s actually a decent size selection as of post time.

Allen Edmonds: Summer Clearance

AE Strandmok

The Picks: Tan Suede Strandmok – $197.00 ($260), Lubbock – $197.00 ($295)

This is a true clearance event. Some real odd-ducks, and sizes can be all over the place. But the Strandmok is sorta the ultimate summer, slightly loud shoe. You’ll pay for it though. The Lubbock single monk is still sitting just under two bills. More on how to wear that one over here.

J. Crew Factory: 10% off $75, 20% off $125 w/ SUMMER

JCF Chino Jacket Back

The Pick: Thompson Chino Suit Jacket – $79.65 ($148)

The Thompson suit jacket in Chino is back in stock… or so it seems… since the ship date is clear out in October. But these long-distance shipping dates have popped up before, and the products usually (not always) get shipped well before that. Anyway, might be worth looking around if you’re in the market for a Thompson wool suit. Sizes are scattered there though, and the summer suits are all but sold out.

Express: 40% off Clearance + Extra $30 off $75 w/ 4246

Express 40 off

The Picks: Fine Stripe Photographer Jacket + Photographer Pant – $136.74 ($277.90)

Well that’s nice. Code 4246 is still active, and seems to take $30 off $75. That drops their cotton suit down to under $140, and it ships free. Also offered in their slightly fuller “producer” fit. Their Khaki and White “sateen” suit separates are also sitting at this price. Thanks to David for the tip about the sale.

Also worth a mention: Billy Reid’s summer sale has added some new items. Coach is offering 25% off in store and online w/ this free Gilt City voucher. EXTRA20 takes an extra 20% off L.L. Bean Signature sale items. The Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale for Men is ongoing. GILT is running a Simon Spurr Sale, with some made in the USA jeans for $60-$70, but know they’re final sale. Dockers is offering an extra 20% off sale items with the code EXTRA20. J. Crew is once again running a 30% off almost everything code (and yes, suiting is excluded but blazers are fair game). Zara’s big summer sale starts on Friday 6/12.

I’ve seen mirrors less shiny and uniform than those Charles Tyrwhitt shoes (as they appear on the site)! Is that corrected leather?

Another great deal for a goodyear welted shoe right now (IMO) is the Florsheim Veblen purchased through myhabit.com for $90. Beautiful longwing in a bunch of colors that usually goes for $175: http://www.florsheim.com/shop/style/12071-226.html.

Didn’t link myhabit because i dont know what’s kosher on referral stuff and that was the only way i could figure out how to do it.

Picked up Allen Edmond’s Navy Spiagga online as a summer shoe for $197. Shipment notification after only 2days, and I can’t wait to get this beautiful shoe! Chinos, slacks, shorts, bath robe, you name it, this shoe will work.

I bought those BR VIntage 5 Pocket pants in Stone about a month ago. I liked them enough I’ll probably pick up this pair in blue as well.

  6. Forrest Sobieszczyk says

    June 20, 2013 at 1:56 PM

When I looked yesterday they still had this one in most sizes and widths. The white version only had a couple random sizes remaining.

  7. Joe says

    June 20, 2013 at 2:40 PM

That’s something I wondered about too. ’tis a little too perfect in the pics?

  8. rnjbond says

    June 20, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Worth mentioning for BR is their find it in store program – I haven’t tried it, but apparently, you can have it held in the store nearest you and then try it on, decide if you like it, and only pay for what you want. Much better than visiting and seeing if they have it in stock.

Also, those Tyrwhitt shoes – seen them in person and they’re very nice, especially the double monks.

  9. rnjbond says

    June 20, 2013 at 2:43 PM

I don’t think so; I’ve seen their double monks in person and they’re not super glossy like the photos.

  10. Nam says

    June 20, 2013 at 2:43 PM

Something to keep in mind if you do go with UK shipping, there’s always a chance that you could get hit with some stupidly outrageous custom tax or broker fees. 20$ is kind of not worth the risk and shipping time IMO.

  11. DXLi says

    June 20, 2013 at 2:48 PM

Just did a quick search and found this eBay listing. It’s interesting… the luster definitely looks like corrected leather, but it doesn’t crease like it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Charles-Tyrwhitt-Mens-Black-Oxford-Size-9-5-Made-In-England-/230892884237

  12. rnjbond says

    June 20, 2013 at 3:00 PM

Could also be a guy who super shined his shoes for the photo to sell it.

If I had money, I’d probably buy these… but it may be worth a call to Tyrwhitt just to clarify.

  13. rnjbond says

    June 20, 2013 at 3:01 PM

Absolutely agree. Using the double monks, for example, brings out an aggregate savings of less than $10. Seriously, go with the US site.

  14. Bruschetta says

    June 20, 2013 at 3:19 PM

For £10 I would be willing to drop by their store and snap a picture for you.

It’s probably corrected grain. Charles Tyrwhitt shoes are made by Loake, and Loake has some overseas factories that use low quality leathers.

Picked up my first ever pair of AE at my local store’s tent sale,(All weekend for those in SE WI) Strand in walnut, can’t wait to bust them out!

  16. Samuel says

    June 20, 2013 at 4:47 PM

I’ve wanted to pull the trigger and buy those those so many times. I’ve got too many other brown wingtip and other brown shoes to justify it, but I might be picking up some Walnut Strands soon. Beautiful shoe, probably one of my top 3 favorite shoes!

Is the jcf jacket tts? Usually a 36r, but sometimes 38r in BR tailored jackets.

If you’re close to Milwaukee, hit the Allen Edmonds yearly tent sale through June 23rd. Good deals, but limited selection.

Pro-tip: If you have a Capital One card, they do not charge the conversion fees/transaction fees.

  24. Timbo says

    June 21, 2013 at 7:47 AM

You’re probably a 36r in J.Crew, their jackets are cut pretty large.

  25. Timbo says

    June 21, 2013 at 7:48 AM

Man, those double monks are absolutely perfect. I need to start choosing shoes over the bar.

  26. Josh says

I know there’s not a ton of love around here for Express, but I picked up the chalk striped suit and the khaki sateen. A little concerned about the fabric sheen on the khaki. I have a few summer weddings coming up and figured wool would be a bad idea in South Carolina. For the price? At least I know they fit well off the rack and I can return direct to the store if I don’t like em.

  27. Ephman says

    June 21, 2013 at 8:32 AM

Were they on sale? I’ve wanted the walnut strandy’s for too long!

  29. jamie says

I took a chance on the Factory Thompson Chino suit in navy – total was $117 w/o tax. Anyone know if its fully/partially lined? I have an H&M cotton/linen jacket in navy but I like the idea of a navy summer suit. I’d prefer a navy seersucker really, but Bonobos is $400+, and even with a decent code that’s pricey for a “summer” suit. Any other navy seersuckers out there I should know about (J.Crew had one but appears to be gone – plus it was at least as expensive as the Bonobos, I’m sure)?

I tried on the black pair at the AE store in chicago and they feel like slippers.

Must not purchase, repeat…MUST not purchase….

  31. Josh says

    June 21, 2013 at 12:19 PM

Jealous, man. Wish they had my size. Went with the Express options above for a summer suit, but I’d be much more comfortable in navy than khaki/chalk.

  32. jamie says

    June 21, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Along the lines of summer suiting – today Bonobos is having 25% off their Fairfax (“lightweight cotton twill”) suiting. Code is SUITUP25, regular price is $425 before discount.

  33. Miguel says

    June 21, 2013 at 10:41 PM

Massimo Dutti is also running a huge sale online! Its worth to take a look. Most of the stuff is 40% off and they are reasonably priced compared to US brands

    …sorry, it was right there.

  35. Jason M says

    June 22, 2013 at 6:08 AM

Picked up several items because of this. Also, it was 40% off already reduced for me.

  36. Samuel says

Thanks for the comments. I’ve received a lot of complements on them, but one guy made a mildly rude remark last night. I quietly told him, “When I feel like taking style advice from a grown man wearing an NBA jersey, I’ll let you know.”

    That quickly ended that exchange.

(The NBA finals ended two nights ago, and it was for a team not even in the finals.)
