Jack Spade + Barbour Plimpton Jacket – $314.25 ($749) w/ MEM25OFF
Code takes an extra 25% off sale items through 5/27. XS, M, and XL available at post time.
“Made from Barbour’s iconic waxed canvas, the Plimpton Jacket’s features include a Barbour tartan and orange pop lining, corduroy collar, snap-in game pocket, a classic belted construction, and custom hardware…”

The belt is what makes this jacket interesting. Otherwise it looks like something I could find at Burlington Coat Factory any given Saturday.
not a winner. strange looking ranch coat for wealthy people to look poor in
I personally like the coat, but this has to be one the best comments I’ve read.
Sure, it doesn’t have the texture of the waxed canvas one, but I’d settle for spending $99 on this instead: http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Navigation/Sale/AllProducts/PRDOVR~99946/99102808318/ENE~1+2+3+22+4294967294+20~~~20+16+4294967181~15~~~~~~~/99946.jsp
For the price of this 60% off ON SALE coat, I could get a brand new Bedale/Beaufort brand new at FULL PRICE. Those are classic, this is not. Pass.
I put two instances of “brand new” in just so you can know how brand new it is.
I’m a fan of Jack Spade. I’m a fan of Barbour. I have one of the bags from this collab. Not feeling this barn coat though. Somehow I think it would look better on an actual model, but its not something I’d drop that money on. Like the other poster has said, you could get a classic Barbour new for less money. You could also get the navy waxed sailcloth Jack Spade jacket thats currently on the site, for less, and better looking, IMO.
I don’t know if my taste in jackets is just that different from the rest of the style community, but I don’t get the brown contrast collars, often made of corduroy that seem to be recommended over and over again (quite often they’re Barbour). They tend to look like something a farmer would wear in a milk commercial (not that there’s anything wrong with that) – it just doesn’t seem to fit with the image that most of the style blogs tend to target…
I’m not just trying to nay-say, I’d honestly like to know if I’m the only one with this opinion. Additionally, can someone tell me why this look is appealing? I think I must be missing something.
Plz describe condition. Thnx.
This. I may be the minority, but I don’t understand the appeal of looking like you’re heading to the cow barn to do the daily chores…. That is to say, this type of jacket (typically green or blue with a contrasting cord collar) just doesn’t seem to fit with the overall image that this site seems to aim for most of the time; many other style blogs follow suit, too. Not saying deviating from the ‘standard uniform’ is a bad thing, but I guess I just don’t get these jackets.
Beauty in functionality I guess. Designed to be durable, protective, waterproof, etc. In addition they lend a certain element of the ‘rugged’ to an outfit. Personally, I like them. I just don’t happen to like this example – definitely not for the price.
Heavily used, some cow poop.
OOH. There’s a website idea in there. Like an anti-dappered. Expensive clothes that look bad, instead of affordable clothes that look great.
Crappered?
(I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the design aesthetics of the jacket up above. I would never drop that kind of cash on it, but I am in the “damn” camp this time.)
I can’t tell you why they look appealing because they don’t appeal to me at all. I’m right there with you – I just don’t get this look at all. There’s nothing wrong with it – it’s a fine working jacket. But the name of the site is “Dappered,” not “Averaged.”
Exactly. I’ve never understood this either. If you actually need a work coat, buy a Carhartt or something equally functional and make sure it looks like you’ve actually done work in it. But buying an expensive coat that looks like it was designed for work but is too nice to get dirty or beat up? I don’t quite get it.
I love your comment. But this kind of jacket, or item in general, really strikes a positive chord with me. There’s something about understated quality that I find appealing. I expect it to age well, like a favorite pair of shoes that cost more at first, but have worn well for so long and look even better over time. Or the way I liked the dirt and dents on my old jeep. There’s a japanese term that I can’t remember for the life of me, that refers to the way some things become more pleasing as they deteriorate. I expect this coat to be that kind of item.
This is the camp david jacket. It does have the audi understated luxury vibe. Looks like tommy lee jones or g w bush would love it for lazy days
This is the range rover on sunday coat
Scott, I think that Japanese term is “wabi-sabi”: “The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is ‘imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete’.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi
I kind of dig it. But I won’t buy it.
I would rather just have a Carhartt.
