The $77 cotton blazer, Major Shoe Clearance, & more – Thursday Handful

May 23, 2013 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

DSW: Shoe Clearance + Free Shipping w/ SHIPR

Dsw Clearance

The Picks: John Varvatos Dress Chukka – $119.94 ($298), Santoni Goodyear Suede Oxford – $249.94 ($795), Santoni Suede Chukka – $149.94 ($595), Santoni Goodyear Chukka – $249.94 ($795), John Varvatos Star USA Driver – $99.94 ($198)

DSW has launched a major clearance and at post time there’s a good amount of sizes left on most shoes. Varvatos seems to be one of those brands with head-scratchingly high retail prices (for the quality). And read the reviews on the dress chukka… these aren’t risk free, but if you can deal with that small logo on the heel, man do they look like something else. Also, lots of Italian made options from their LUXE810 section, including those Goodyear welted Santoni cap toes.

Last Call: 40% off Site wide (exp 5/23)

LastCallSuit

The Picks: Hugo Boss “The Grand Central” suit in windowpane plaid – $345 ($795), Magnanni Double Monk Strap in leather – $179.40 (suede too), Magnanni Cap Toe Oxford in Navy Suede – $165.00,  Linen/cotton blend blazer – $148.00 ($375)

The 40% drops to 30% tomorrow (5/24), and it’s not limited to just one or two purchases, but everything. Mid $300s is about as high as most will go on a fused suit. Even though retail is $795 on this one, Hugo Boss suits are usually fused… right? Made in the USA, and that pattern is terrific. Purchases north of $75 ship free with the code LCMAY75.

J. Crew: $30 off $150, $50 off $200, $75 off $250 w/ SHOPNOW (exp 5/26)

Handful Kenton

The Picks: Kenton Suede Bucks + Casual Boot Laces = $150.99 ($200.99),
Ludlow Sportcoat in Italian Linen – $272 ($348)

Those casual boot laces mentioned as a pick aren’t intended to be used with the bucks. The shoes are $198. Buying those laces bring the total price to $200.99. Which is right over the second threshold. If you were to buy JUST the shoes, they’d cost $168 after the code. So… get the laces, or, something else inexpensive like a pair of socks so you tip that balance. Goodyear welted, and you can read a full review here. As far as the blazer goes, that’s about 22% off, so, not incredible, but a decent deal. Suiting is excluded from the code. Code expires Sunday 5/26. Not Monday?

Macy’s: Two-Day Specials, also Extra 10%-15% off w/ SAVE

Macys 2 day handful

The Picks: KCNY Pincord Suit Separates – $174.98, Michael Kors Linen Suit – $169.99

If it’s a 2-day special, like both suits above, the extra 15% off code won’t apply. But under $200 for a summer suit is still a solid deal. Michael Kors suits can fall in that grey area between slim fit and traditional, so expect tailoring. The Kenneth Cole Pincord is a nice alternative to the J. Crew Factory Thompson option, but do know that the KCNY is fully lined. Two day special prices expire today, 5/23. Update: Looks like SAVE will only get you an extra 10% off on suits + sportcoats, not 15%. 2-day specials are still excluded. Good grief that’s a lot of exclusions.

EXPRESS: 40% off everything, no code needed. (exp 5/27)

Express end on end blazer

The Picks: End on End Cotton Blazer – $76.80 ($128)

That blazer might be one of the bigger winners of the spring/summer season. Cotton, just partially lined, and could very well make a perfect, inexpensive replacement for the wool blazer seen in this style scenario here. Don’t be afraid to wear a darker grey like this in the summer, as long as the sun has gone down and the temps have dipped a bit.  UPDATE: Try code 1665 at checkout for $25 off $100. Seems to stack. Hat tip to fattsmann in the comments.

Also worth a mention: Jack Spade’s sale section is now an extra 25% off w/ MEM25OFF. Lands’ End / L.E.C. are offering 20% off sale + clearance w/ EXCLUSIVE and 2226. Club Monaco is taking an extra 30% off sale items with the code MEMORIAL30. Ralph Lauren has an extra 25% off select (yes, select) sale styles with the code RLMEM13. Cole Haan has 25% off your total purchase with 25MEMORIAL. J. Crew Factory has extended a 40% off sale to everything on their site through 5/27 (and 50% off in stores through 5/27). Prices are marked, and that pushes many of their Thompson suit jackets down to around a hundred bucks. Sizes are a little scattered, but most are available. Pique was fully lined in poly, with the corded cotton just half lined. Oxford is fully lined but looks incredible. Thanks to BenR for posting pics on Threads, and thanks to Andrew for the heads up about the sale extension in the comments.

Friday Updates: Bloomingdale’s is running one of their Big Brown Bag Sales, and the code EXTRA20 takes an extra 20% off sale items at checkout. That drops these Italian made boat/moc hybrids down to $98. Brooks Brothers is doing a 2 for $99 on shorts + polos deal. Aldo has put a chunk of Mr. B’s on sale and is offering free shipping through Monday. Need Supply Co. is taking an extra 20% off sale items w/ EXTRA20 and items in their sale section include the BillyKirk Schoolboy Satchel and this pricey pair of Burgundy Alden Longwings (now $360 w/ the code). Lands’ End Canvas is taking 30% off everything w/ CANVAS and 1315. In addition to the SHOPNOW tiered code already mentioned, J. Crew is offering 30% off sale items with SHOPJCREW.

Did the Jcrew Factory online 40% sale and in-store 50% not make the top five this week?

  2. Jessy says

    May 23, 2013 at 6:34 AM

Ordered the Express blazer in X-Small. Not a lot of info on the sizing, but I’ll take a chance.

  3. BJ McGeever says

    May 23, 2013 at 6:54 AM

The JCF 40% off sale was only yesterday.

$225 is alright. I’ve seen them dip below $200 though.

  4. liurobs says

    May 23, 2013 at 6:57 AM

JCF Thompsons can dip below 200, then it’s a deal

  5. Andrew Kocsis says

    May 23, 2013 at 7:07 AM

    Hmmm… website still has the 40% deal… and the 50% in-store says it’s through the 27th… Thompson’s included… not too bad, gets it below the $200 threshold…

I saw that Express has an online-only cotten-linen suit in “olive” color. Anybody have experience with it?

  7. Zeejet says

    May 23, 2013 at 7:21 AM

Interesting Blazer. Are EXPRESS items smaller in size than most? The medium for the blazer is a 36-38 while the large is a 38-40.

  8. jdw says

    May 23, 2013 at 7:25 AM

One of these days, there will be a shoe sale (somewhere other than Allen-Edmonds) that has widths other than medium. I just know it.

  9. pratyk says

    May 23, 2013 at 7:37 AM

There are a bunch of Walk Over & Gorilla bucks available in the clearance section for 70-80$. Quite the steal. Sizes seem to be disappearing fast.

  10. liurobs says

    May 23, 2013 at 7:42 AM

Where are you seeing this? The sizing chart I see has the small as “numerical” 38

  11. Joe says

    May 23, 2013 at 7:51 AM

It did say that it expired yesterday, but they’ve since extended it to all items on their site and through the weekend. Updated above. Thanks Andrew!

  12. Patrick Snyder says

    May 23, 2013 at 7:54 AM

I was wondering about this. How is the quality and are they true to size? Comfortable? Also, how do you feel about the contrast backstay on the Walkovers? From their website and Facebook, it looks like Gorilla USA is not still in business, and reviews are hard to come by.

  13. Patrick Snyder says

    May 23, 2013 at 8:34 AM

One more: Do the tan or gray work with a range of khaki pants, or should I just stick with the brown?

  14. rnjbond says

    May 23, 2013 at 8:38 AM

Where are you getting that “SAVE” gives you 15% off at Macys? It says 10%

“Enjoy 10% off select home, select watches, shoes, coats, suits, dresses, lingerie, mens suit separates & sport coats during the Memorial Day Sale!”

  15. Alex says

    May 23, 2013 at 8:43 AM

Theoretically speaking with this J Crew discount, the 75$ credit goes flat onto the final price of the items. So if I purchased 250$ worth of stuff, returned what I didn’t want I’d still keep the 75$ off correct? To specify the 75$ does NOT lower the per-item price of the clothing, it’s just a dollar value taken off the total tab.

  16. fattsmann says

    May 23, 2013 at 8:52 AM

25 off 100 for Express stacks with the 40% off.

Do we think the J Crew sale ending Sunday means we’re gonna get another deal on Monday?

    This checks out. Awesome!

  19. rnjbond says

Reviews say this runs small… I’m a little conflicted which size to get to match a 38R everywhere else. Small could do the trick, but it also says it matches up with a 14.5″ neck, which I doubt too many that wear 38R have.

  20. Tim Hutchinson says

    May 23, 2013 at 9:10 AM

I can’t speak for JCrew specifically, but my general experience with retailers is that the discount is applied proportionally to each item when calculating return value.

Example: If you had $50 off $200 and bought 3 items at $100, $50, $50, then got the $50 off, your return value for the $100 item would be $75 (100-50/2), for the $50 items would be $37.50 each (50-50/4)

“Place qualifying items in shopping bag, then enter promo code SAVE in the box labeled “HAVE A PROMO CODE?”and click “APPLY.”You can enter the promo code in your shopping bag at any time before or during checkout. Only one promo code may be used per transaction. EXTRA 15% OFF regular, sale and clearance prices, including select jewelry, with exclusions listed. EXTRA 10% OFF home, select watches, shoes, coats, suits, dresses, lingerie, men’s suit separates & sport coats,”

Looks like suits/sport coats only get 10%. Macy’s exclusions are insane.

What’s interesting is that it seems to be 15% off some select Tallia Orange sportcoats. I found a few intriguing ones, though that would probably require ignoring your post from yesterday about too much colour…

Such as this pink linen blazer (Also available in orange!) – http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/tallia-orange-sportcoats-pink-linen-sportcoats?ID=813500&CategoryID=16499&RVI=PDP_6

Depends on holes in your wardrobe, but general ones I like:

    1) The extra slim fit 1MX shirt – seem to be really popular around here: http://www.express.com/clothing/extra+slim+1mx+stretch+cotton+shirt/pro/0306564/cat270001

    2) A pair of coloured chinos to pair with the blazer. I happen to like this colour: http://www.express.com/clothing/colored+chino+photographer+pant/pro/3082573/cat320038

    3) A pair of shorts. It is summer, after all: http://www.express.com/clothing/9+inch+flat+front+photographer+shorts/pro/3532337/cat280004

did this stop working? i added some pants to get the total to above 100 and its saying error. bummer, it wouldve meant $10 photographer pants

  30. Alex says

    May 23, 2013 at 1:08 PM

When I got to checkout via the site, it was each item rung up full price, and then a flat 75$ taken off. So wouldn’t a return come up in the system as returning for full price? I tend to agree, usually it will apply some proportional discount so I was surprised to see them deduct a flat 75$.

  31. Tim Hutchinson says

    May 23, 2013 at 3:00 PM

I often see check out displays like that simply because it makes more sense to customers who aren’t expected the proportion and it’s how the sale really worked. But when you get the receipt that show return values, it’s different. Otherwise, I could just return everything and pocket $75

  32. IUcordes says

    May 23, 2013 at 3:29 PM

Where are you seeing the sizing on this? I’m only seeing women’s as well. Need to be sure I get it right as a 6’4 200 pound dude. Thanks.

  33. rnjbond says

    May 23, 2013 at 3:37 PM

It did. Sometimes, you have to pull the trigger.

  34. rnjbond says

    May 23, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Click the sizing chart on the page of the blazer.

At the top right of the pop-up box, there should be an option to switch from women’s sizing to men’s sizing.

  35. rnjbond says

    May 23, 2013 at 3:39 PM

Just a heads-up, went to Macy’s today to look at some of this stuff in-person… and they said there’s a 25% off men’s clothing next week.

Of course, 25% off what exactly, I don’t know.

  36. Ben says

    May 23, 2013 at 4:37 PM

I checked out the Express blazer over my lunch break. I’m 6’0″, 165 lbs, 38R off the rack usually fit like a glove (especially in BR suits). The small fit best in arm length and shoulders, but was a little tight (due to this being a “fitted” type item) in the waist and chest.

The fabric is super light and the blazer has no structure. The collar and lapels were pretty wrinkly and didnt seem to lay/crease right. The Target Kensington blazers seem to be a better choice then this.

I did pick this up http://www.express.com/clothing/cotton+threetopocket+system+jacket/pro/6113043/cat1004. Heavier fabric and much better fit and no issues with the collar/lapels.

Little late to this, but I picked up an unlined slim navy cotton blazer from JCP (JCP brand) on sale for $50 (in-store).

    http://www.jcpenney.com/dotcom/men/view-all-brands/jcp%25e2%2584%25a2-slim-fit-cotton-blazer/prod.jump?ppId=pp5002440114&catId=cat100250022&deptId=dept20000014&N=1002280003&extDim=true&topDim=Categories&topDimvalue=sportcoats&dimCombo=Categories|&dimComboVal=sportcoats|&currentDim=Categories&currentDimVal=sportcoats

The material has a bit of a sheen to it so it can be dressed up easier. Great off the rack fit. I wish the lower pockets weren’t patch pockets, but still, just what I was looking for.
