Wow, such hate! I bought the non-boot version and my students love them. They’re not meant to be taken seriously, or at least that’s how I wear them.

sometimes i don’t really get these offered without comment postings. you offer them without comment, but i’m a little confused as to why you offer them at all. this is not a fashion website — you make that explicit in your mission statement. this is probably necessary, because i perceive a large gap between the world of actual fashion and the world of men’s style, i.e. simply dressing well (where ‘well’ is defined largely by social context) without really attempting to engage with traditions and expectations, communicate any idea in particular, etc. this is, of course, what most of this website’s readers aim to do; few seem to have much interest in high fashion or runway shows. i don’t think people with serious interests in the world of fashion are frequenting banana republic all that often. it seems a bit odd to take bits that are clearly much closer to this world than to dappered’s subject matter and post them wordlessly.
i kind of feel like there’s an aspect of these postings/their responses that seem to ignore the legitimacy of the high fashion (not that these are high fashion) in favor of judging articles of clothing by a more traditional set of standards. if the designer of these shoes (or things like creepers) had wanted them to look like a normal pair of longwing boots, i imagine that would have been easily doable. my point is that they’re not *supposed* to look like it fell off the back of a j crew truck and all the light-hearted mockery in these postings, while not particularly offensive, seems to not-so-subtly imply that they should. to me, this whole thing seems akin to walking past a frank gehry building and asking why it looks so weird and stupid.

This is incredible. I mean, we’ve all wondered where “unique” thrift store items come from. And now we see the birth of one.
I’m having a hard time taking Cole Haan seriously lately. They’ll have great shoes then give them neon yellow soles.

Simply put: these aren’t positioned as untouchable “high fashion”. They’re priced to sell at a nationwide brand. Your realtor doesn’t have a Gehry listing on his coffee table.
For $70 I can imagine a lot worse. Ditch the croc grain, tone down the color (more of a dusky red than bubblegum pink) and they’d actually be wearable as a casual beater boot.

that’s true! and obviously from the absurd discount, these weren’t a runaway success, though maybe they weren’t intended to be. but i think things are less cut-and-dry than prada and k-mart, and from their stock, cole haan to me has always been closer to the fashiony side. if this were old navy i’d agree, but from what i’ve read haan has some presence in that world. these don’t seem too out of place to me.
I live in Manhattan. So yes, my realtor is pushing listing in the residential Gehry building downtown. 🙂

Someone is going to hell for proposing this idea to cole haan. And it’s out of stock. This confuses me on so many horrible, horrible levels.

You wear these? Much props. You are a bigger man than me.

There is a chance, an ever so slight chance, that you might be over thinking this.

Cole Haan has been making “Nike air” versions of dress and casual-dress shoes for a number of years now — it’s a major line for them. The “sell” is comfort with style. If you’re buying.

Gross. Not buying into the lunargrand business either.

Buy em, wear em, if you don’t like em pay a few bucks & have the leather dyed a dark color. These would have rocked in the 80s–which means hipsters would kill for these today.
No.
In for 2 pairs.
Hell no.
Can’t wait for the double monk version!
Out of stock! o_O
Oh the indignity. And the boot knows it. Just look at the toe, where the sole seems to be turning down like a trembling lower lip. You sad, sad boot.

A picture is worth a thousand words!
Seems like a simple and fun posting that many of us enjoy commenting on. You don’t have to get it or even read it if it doesn’t interest you.
Color aside, it has an air of Cronmok.
You teach at clown college? I kid of course.
Hey, if you like em, wear them in good health.
Missing the boat, man…
Hey, anything to get 19 to 22 year-olds to participate at 3:30!
But it’s fun…

Haha, I hear ya man.
I could not help but chuckle. lol

It’s great because you can just rip off a piece of your shoes when you want some bubblegum
“This [Air Jayhawker] is a fitting example of a sophisticated and gentlemanly shoe,” said no one ever.
The pinnacle of fashion, if you’re a ’70s pimp.

Absolutely not.
Cole Haans stuff has always been a little out there. Not my personal style, but hey, these I am sure will float somebody’s boat.
spot-on! What a movie, guaranteed to cheer up the surliest of folk.
