Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
.
form•function•form: 20% off w/ StaleEasterCandyStillYummy (exp 4/8)

The Pick: Shell Cordovan Timex Weekender – $88 ($110), Architect’s Wallet – $80 ($100)
Well that just might be the best promo code of all time. The FFF team is cutting out early this week for a long weekend, so they’re running an “escape the studio” sale with that promo code. Only restrictions are that it’s limited to stock on hand, and since they’ll cut the goods when they get back, later orders might have to be refunded if they run out of, say, cordovan leather. Full review of the Shell Cordovan Weekender over here. StaleEasterCandyStillYummy is good through Monday.
BillyReid: 25% off Friends & Family w/ SPRING25

The Picks: Tobacco Leather Briefcase – $221.25 ($295), Espadrille Chukka – $221.25 ($295)
A warning, this stuff can get pricey. But American designer Billy Reid has found a nice position in the retail industry when it comes to offering high quality, luxury goods, that while expensive… aren’t European runway designer crazy quadruple digit costly. Code doesn’t expire until Sunday 4/17. Sadly, it won’t work on the Bond Peacoat. Meanwhile, also sadly, the Horween Cordovan option for the briefcase is sold out (that in reference just to the color perhaps? It was going for just $295.) Meanwhile, the Nordstrom owned HauteLook has launched a duo of Billy Reid sales (Clothes + shoes… looks like last season’s stuff?).
Ralph Lauren: Extra 25% off Select Styles w/ RLGIVING13

The Picks: Telly Suede Driver – $149.99 ($395), Penny loafer – $74.25 ($99), 2-Tone Sunglasses – $105 ($140)
It’s Ralph Lauren’s Spring Pink Pony Fund donation time, and they’ve activated a 25% off most-items code to help showcase their $100,000 donation to cancer care and prevention (you can also make a donation at checkout). There are some excluded items, but the majority of the site seems to be up for the code. Even sale. Which drops these already marked down, Italian made, suede drivers to $150. Still expensive for a driver, but they were, wait for it… $400 (holy crap). Available in brown, olive, “sand”, navy and red.
jcp: $10 off a purchase of $50 w/ SPEND50

The Picks: jcp striped jersey polo ($14) + jcp Flat Front Chinos ($30) + jcp Oxford Shorts ($16) = $50
You can also just print off a coupon and head in store. Meanwhile, from the department of “is this just a blip or is something really weird going on here?”….
What’s with the major Price Jumps?: The well loved jcp OCBD’s have jumped from $25 to $40 online. Their terrific Stafford slim fit suit separates have gone from $180 total to $360. Anybody got any ideas as to why?
UPDATE: The guys on threads are all over this. Bravo to them. Thanks to Juan for the heads up. It was nice to always have those $25 OCBDs available, with clearance and every once in awhile sales on top of that. But it obviously wasn’t working, and this… this just seems like flailing doesn’t it?
Lands’ End / L.E.C.: Extra 20% off all Sale & Clearance w/ AFFCLX20 + 4205 (exp 4/5)

The Picks: Tailored Fit Supima Twill Sportcoat + Matching Pant – $166.20
, Pincord Jacket
+ Matching Pant – $139.98
, Tailored Fit Donnegal Trouser – $47.99
, L.E.C. 5-Pocket Straight Fit Moleskin Pants in currant – $31.99
Combine the code AFFCLX20 and pin 4205 with their “Button Downs + More” 25% off shirts, ties, suits and sport coats event, and some of their tailored fit options dip real low. Still going to need some work by your tailor if you’re slim, but mid $100s for a cotton suit isn’t half bad. Works on Lands’ End Canvas sale too.
Also worth a mention: J. Crew Factory continues to roll with 30% off everything w/ code MOREPLEASE. J. Crew‘s sale section has been slightly restocked, and SUNSHINE takes 30% off already marked down items (this worker blazer/jacket is a new addition to sale. Maxton Men is running 25% off gifts with GIFTS25. Express has launched their semi-annual clearance and knocked an additional 20% off clearance items. Charles Tyrwhitt has launched a mid-season sale, and they’ve got a few slim and extra slim shirts in simple checks like this one for under $40 (some of you have mentioned you like CT shirts). Cole Haan has launched an up to 70% off Warehouse sale.
JCP is raising prices so they can go back to their old sales model. There is a thread about it here: http://threads.dappered.com/showthread.php/9694-JCP-Fake-Price-Hikes-Begin
story about it: http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSBRE92Q03G20130327?irpc=932
Sounds like jcp may be bringing back coupon codes if they are doubling retail prices.
Great pick list, thanks for putting it together.
Updated above. Standing ovation for the guys over on threads. Missed this one.
And boy, this just looks awful to me. Debut new shirt at $25. New shirt is awesome. New shirt drops to $15 or $20 on clearance (or with an every once in awhile code). That’s just awesome (to me at least). Now new shirt is $40. Annnnnd we wait for at least 40% off?
The old strategy obviously wasn’t working though.
Flailing indeed. Especially after their price comparison stuff. They’ve now surpassed the “everywhere else” price. For shame, jcp.
Heads up on the tailored pin cord suit from LE. It’s waaaay slimmer than you’d expect. I have their tailored chinos in a 31 waist and the pin cord was unwearably tight through the seat and thighs. Jacket was also slimmer than I expected with a disappointingly strong shoulder.
I am just glad that I bought the stafford suit seperates coat couple weeks ago!
I don’t feel as if the old strategy was given a proper time limit to take hold. Bouncing back and forth will only make things worst for those who did like that sales model. (Unless the sales are frequent)
I just don’t know anyone who goes to jcp looking for an “upscale” and costly clothing experience. Could be the nail in the coffin
FYI – those JCP chinos run wicked small. Size up. Of course, they don’t list it as a “slim/skinny fit”. IMHO they run tighter than BR’s tailored slim fit trousers.
Really? 32×30 fit me well. And I’m a straight fit over slim fit guy.
I’m a 34×34 in Bonobos straight (35×34 in the aforementioned BR) and the JCP were too small. Had to go 36×34 and even then a bit snug on the thighs. Otherwise a very nice chino.
The only reason I was remotely interested in JCP was to try out their OCBD’s. I will not play their little price games. They just lost me as a potential customer.
I had to size up on JCP pants as well – normally a 30×30 or 31×30, but went with 32 on the cords I bought a couple months ago.
I don’t think it’s so much an issue of the clothing running big or small, as it is an issue of inconsistent sizing/quality control. In this price range, that should be a given.
Same here. I was going to go in and pick up one or two but now I don’t think I’ll bother…
Agreed. The luster that brought me to the store was their decently fitting clothes at a steal of a price. If they take that away then I will definitely jump ship.
Me too! I purchased the Blue Glen suit (jacket and pants) for $107 total. I am wearing it now, actually. Disappointed to see it marked up to $360.
Bah! The only thing I would have wanted from Billy Reid was the Bond peacoat. Ah well.
Like the Billy Reid suitcase, although I wish it didn’t have the zipper on it.
You didn’t buy it when the shirt was $20, and not even when it was $10 on clearance? Did they really lose you as a ‘potential customer?’
Timex really makes a good looking watch for under $100, even under $50. Great picks today Joe. Should do an Espadrille post sometime, classic or trendy? (And if you already did that, I apologize.)
Saw that worker/blazer jacket at JCrew yesterday. Their sizes run a bit big though. I called and got measurements and I’m a 38R which equates to about a S in that blazer which they don’t have in stock.
Sweet. Just the excuse I need to pull the trigger on a FFF watchband.
they lost you as a potential customer because they raised their prices to unreasonable levels and will go back to offering frequent promotions instead of just having low prices to begin with? i agree, this technically constitutes a “little price game,” but if it’s that alienating, i kind of wonder where you shop! a good chunk of the stores dappered focuses on does this exact thing; banana republic, gap, lands’ end canvas, j crew factory, etc. all artificially inflate their prices only to offer 30-40% off on a regular basis.
i don’t blame jcpenney for doing this at all. it’s not a little game — it’s marketing. this is how they always worked and it served them well. they tried changing to a strategy more easily taken at face value, as most of us would prefer, and it was a colossal disaster. “sticking to their guns” as one person suggested in the thread joe linked would be foolish.
Land’s End Code DECK/5313 may work for 25% off. Valid 4/3 to 4/11. Oops should be thes ame as the AFFCLX20 code.
yeah, they’re making things more expensive. which is bad! but, who’s going to know? from the looks of it, they’ve been hemorrhaging old customers for a year now. this is clearly a play to win back old shoppers, and being that they’re old shoppers, they probably haven’t been in jcpenney enough over the past year to remember how much these same shirts used to cost, or the hypocrisy of the switch given jcp’s fondness for “us vs. them” pricing comparisons on their items.
i don’t think it’s the dappered crowd that jcpenney is really worried about losing.
As pointed out, they are just doing what everybody else does. Gap. J Crew. LEC. Macys. Bonobos. Everybody. They tried to be different and treat Americans like we were intelligent and rational and that blew up in their face (and then blew their face across the room and then their face melted!) I’m happy to give them credit for trying and, since I like their stuff, I’ll shop their sales.
If you still want to try their OCBD, last season’s version (which I think is slimmer and better) is still clogging up clearance racks for $10 or so. Also, they haven’t upped the price on most of their stuff. It seems like they are targetting a few key items first so JCP so it might be a while before they go full-bore.
Does anyone know if one of the form function watch straps would work with a citizen eco-drive? (or if it would look weird)? Thanks
Don’t see why not, but I guess it would depend on the model. I’m considering getting one for my eco-drive BN0000-04H, which is a pretty stock-looking diver. Just gotta figure out which shade to go with and convince myself that I need such an expensive strap (thanks to the fine folks at Saddleback for my unhealthy fixation on high-quality leather).
On a side note, does anyone here own the shell cordovan strap in whiskey? Has it darkened at all over time?
Well said Tim!!!!!!
“As pointed out, they are just doing what everybody else does. Gap. J Crew. LEC. Macys. Bonobos. Everybody.”
Right. But now that they’re playing the same price game as everybody else…why should anybody shop there?
Target and Uniqlo still have the value basics pretty well covered. J Crew Factory, Macys, LEC as you move up-market. Bonobos on the higher end. What does JCP do that stands out?
I bought 5-6 items at JCP in the last few months. Shorts, a polo, some OCBDs. More than I’ve bought there in the last 10 years. But the flat pricing on value basics with a good fit was their big appeal to me. Otherwise I probably would have waited for a sale at Banana Republic. I just don’t think they’re differentiating themselves enough in terms of style or quality to play the same game everybody else plays.
Agreed. They botched the rollout of what would have been a solid change in their business model and customer demographics.
Now they’re floundering back. But they’ve already lost the old customers. They’re about to piss off the new ones they just earned.
Seems like a spiral down the drain, to me.
I’d been hoping for a FFF code soon. I never figured that Color 8 would be on sale, so I figured natural chromexcel would be the way to go – but I don’t ever remember there being Color 4 available before. That’s gonna be awesome.
Geox makes a suede driver that looks the spitting image of the RL one right at that (discounted) price point, just using perforated suede which works great for going sockless. Italian brand, not “made in Italy” though.
Just saw a post on FB that a couple of cordovan bands (including Whiskey) are fold out on FFF, but the new cordovan Saddle is apparently pretty close to the Whiskey.
Just received the new English Derby Vegetable Tan band and cannot say enough good things about it. It is awesome.
Also, I can’t praise Shawn enough for his awesome customer service…top notch. If you can get in on the sale, it’s an absolute steal…
