Win it: The Orient Mako XL

Orient Mako XL in black – $145.00 via Amazon ($320)

Note:  Also available in luminescent white for around $160.  In case Amazon runs out of the dirt cheap option, these are also available through OrientWatchUSA.com for $224.00 with code spring2013.  The code also gets you the Orient “freebie” package, which includes a quartz watch of Orient’s choosing, a lanyard, and their catalog.  Meanwhile, instructions on how to enter to win are at the bottom of this post.

If you’ve got somewhat larger wrists/forearms, or, you just prefer a larger watch, the original Mako from Orient might leave you asking: “where’s the rest of it?”  Yet around 40 mm in diameter is a traditional size for a diver (the Rolex Submariner is the prime example).  But maybe it’s the fact that we as humans are getting bigger.  Or maybe it’s the rule of thirds, and therefore, many of us like the dial on our watch to take up a bit more than half the real estate on our wrist. Whatever the case, at 44.5m in diameter, the Mako XL is physical big brother of the original Mako, and for many it’s easier on the eyes from a design perspective.

You could easily argue that this thing should really be called the Ray XL.  Like the Ray, this one loses the arabic numerals at 12, 9, and 6 that the standard Mako carries, and instead just goes with indices/batons all around to mark the hours.  Looks a bit cleaner and symmetrical.   The day adjuster button at 2 o’clock is also more recessed and subtle compared to the original (and the Ray).

Links are terrific.  This isn’t a dainty, overly-busy stainless band.  And the shine is kept low thanks to a brushed finish.  In-house automatic movement, 200 m water resistance, screw down crown, and a 40 hour power reserve.  22mm lugs.  Crystal is mineral instead of sapphire.  Bezel rotates one way.  Has a real nice substantial feel without being heavy or totally dominating an average sized wrist (unlike, say, the large Maratac Pilot.)

Is it big?  At almost 45 mm, you bet.  But it’s no wall clock.  Is it a welcome option for those who personally think, for them, the original Mako or Ray is just a touch too small for their own tastes?  Absolutely.

Enter here to win the Mako XL from Orient. One entry per person. Deadline is 11:59 pm ET on 3/20/13.

UPDATE:  Congrats to Scott P. who won the random drawing for the watch.  Thanks to all who entered!
