The Friday Handful 3/8/13

March 8, 2013 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier.  Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look.  Those are what make up these handfuls.  Expect these things when necessary.  Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below.  Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
.

Dappered Donates: Starting to see more items up for bids
Shoes heading into the weekend.
Shoes heading into the weekend.

The Picks: New 1901 Longwings (size 10.5), J&M Melton Oxford (size 8.0)

A million thanks to the guys who have jumped on the Dappered Donates bandwagon right away.  Sprung this on Monday, so I’ve heard some of you were waiting until the weekend to get some items up on ebay.  Looking forward to seeing those, and if we really get the ball rolling, I might throw something extra in from the personal wristwatch collection.  Clean out those closets, sell what you’re not wearing as it is, and donate a % of the sale to Career Gear (hoping for 50% if it’s a basic item that you didn’t cash out your 401k on once upon a time).  That way, you stand to make some cash too.  More info over here, and feel free to post your items up on Dappered Threads.

Brooks Brothers: $25 off Supima Collection Orders of $100+ w/ SUPIMA
BB Supima Sale
3 for $225 + $25 off.  Double Discount? HEY RODGERS!!!

The Picks: Three Extra Slim Dress Shirts in White, Gingham, and Medium Check – $200 ($255.50)

Not the most mindblowing sale because you have to spend quite a bit and you’re limited to their Supima collection, but if you’re a fan of their dress shirts (and plenty are) then it’s worth a look to buy in bulk.  Pick shirts that are 3 for $225, apply the code, and you’re getting three shirts for $66.60 a pop.  Still ain’t cheap, but worth a look if you like BB shirts.  You can see the entire Supima collection that’s available for the discount right here.

HauteLook: FINAL SALE “Mad about Menswear Event”
2 out of 3 here actually made in the USA.
2 out of 3 here actually made in the USA.

The Picks: Cole Haan Melton Coat – $149 ($755), Abboud Blazer – $119 ($595), American Apparel Polo – $10 ($32)

Yesterday afternoon the Nordstrom owned flash sale site HauteLook launched a big final sale / clearance blowout.  Be ready to filter by your size.  Categories include Sweaters, Shirts, Pants/Denim, and Outerwear… which also includes sportcoats and blazers.  Read that fine print.  It’s ALL final sale, so be careful.

DSW:  $40 off $199, $100 off $399, $200 off $599 Luxe810 purchases w/ LUXE810
Not the more wallet friendly Mercanti Fiorentinis.
Not the more wallet friendly Mercanti Fiorentinis.

The Picks: Santoni Half Brogue – $299.95, Santoni Wingtip – $299.95, Ralph Lauren Dunlay Monk – $259.95, Ralph Lauren Haden Suede Driver – $209.95

This is to help promote their new “Luxe810” section that carries high end brands like Santoni, Gucci, Tod’s, etc…  So the low end price point on these isn’t low end at all.  Annoying that DSW.com doesn’t bother to show you the price until you click into the specific item’s page.  Makes for crummy browsing.

J. Crew Factory:  ANOTHER Summer Thompson Suit
Has that classic seersucker pucker.
Has that classic seersucker pucker.

The Pick: J. Crew Factory Thompson Seersucker Suit Jacket & Pant – $177.50 ($236)

There’s no code right now, but the price is well under $200.  This isn’t the same suit as their corded cotton.  Expect a review on the corded cotton and pique options next week.  They’ve gone hog wild this year haven’t they?  Getting to the point where it’s tough to keep up with all of the Factory options.  A heads up about the Corded Cotton option:  Like last year, it’s a little stiff in the fabric.  And you’d think the seersucker is going to be pretty breezy.  So if you’re in the market, and live in a boiling climate, lean towards seersucker.  NOTE:  If you’re on their email list, check your inbox.  Early yesterday morning they sent out an email to some customers with the subject: “You’re invited…” Inside that email was a single use code good for 20% off orders of $125+.  That code would drop the suit to a silly $142.00

Also worth a mention: Express has launched their spring sale.  Use the code 1128 for $25 off every $75 you spend (their website is promoting $25 off every $100 w/1130).  The Bonobos sale section has not one but two Woolrich X Frost River, rugged, Made in the USA briefcases for half off and now under $150.  Maxton Men is doing 25% off all socks with code SOCKS25.  jcp just sent out an email with a couple of $10 off a $25 purchase codes:  GO4TEN and TEN4YOU , but, and this is key, they’re one time use codes with specific user serial numbers attached.  So check your email.  Otherwise they seem to be non transferable.

Love Brooks Brothers supima shirts and fortunately for us small guys they offer extra slim fit– only other shirts I find otr that fit are Express (terrible quality)

I would love to get that seersucker suit, I just cant justify it.

Hrm… I’m looking for a warm weather suit. I copped the J. Crew (not Factory) navy chino suit from eBay for a good price, so I have that covered, but I am still intrigued by seersucker. I tried both corded cotton options from JCF and Lands End featured on the site recently and did not like either. Third time a charm, or should I just stick with the chino?

I bit on the Factory seersucker. Been wanting a seersucker suit for a while and really like the tan chino Factory Thompson I’ve also bought recently. Looking forward to summer even more now!

Just pulled the trigger on the seersucker suit. Been wanting one for a couple of seasons. At $142 (with the 20% code), it’s hard to say no.

Anyone get a JCrew code they would be willing to share?

  8. Jeffrey D says

At $142, I had to order it just to see how it fits. I received the code. If this one fits, I’ll likely grab the other two chino suits, assuming that they fit the same. One thing to note. The seersucker pants seem to be much slimmer than the rest of the Thompson pants.

Just when I think I’m good, Joe has to post this suit at this stupid cheap price. If I don’t get invited to a summer wedding I will just crash some to justify the purchase. I mean, you can’t live in Louisiana without a seersucker suit right?

Same here. I did snag the khaki chino suit though. A bit less peacocky and probably more practical here in New York.

I think its still cheaper to use the corporate discount (15%). Unfortunately, they don’t let you stack them.

Where’d it fit poorly? I haven’t gotten the pants on quite yet, and only got the jackets on once each. Seemed like the sleeves were a little more tapered at the forearm this time, but otherwise, pretty close to the same? The corded cotton is a bit stiffer in the fabric though. Hoping that the seersucker is nice and breezy like seersucker should be. Wish I could be of more help…

I snagged up the chino jcrew suit. just need to get it tailored now.I’d like to buy the seersucker jacket but I can’t justify doing the whole suit. I always see colonel sanders when I see the full suit. The jacket is a nice lightweight spring summer option. Wish it was less padded in the shoulders for an even more casual look.

Can anyone comment on American Apparel’s quality, fit, etc? I see them mentioned now and then (mainly in undershirt/tshirt discussions) and I never know what to make of them. I usually just keep moving because, for the price, I typically can’t justify the blind purchase.

    gixen.com

There probably is. You can use that website to set your max bid on an item and it bids automatically for you until that limit is reached.

Thanks Joe- on the corded cotton, I felt the jacket was cut longer and the pants baggier in the seat, but maybe it was just the stiffness of the material? Look forward to the full review of the cotton pique.

Can you list your measurements and the size you wear? I’m always cautious with sizing down because of my arm length. My measurements are 16.5″ neck, 36″ sleeve, 41″ to 42″ chest, 35″ waist, 6’1″ tall, 175 lbs. I’m tall and quite slender with long arms. Shopping is getting easier as things trend slimmer and slimmer, but I still need to be very careful with blind buys.

I just read about that- unfortunately my company is hovers around 30 employees and you need to be atleast 50 to get the corp. membership
