Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
.
Kent Wang: Spend $100 get $150 Urban Daddy Deal

The Picks: Rugby in Grey – $85, Sterling Silver Stirrup Cufflinks – $55, Horn Comb – $20
Thanks to everyone who sent in a style tip on this one. Kent Wang is known for, among other things, really good polo shirts. Polos with collars that are made like standard shirt collars. So there’s less flop, curl, and all that other junk. It’s no bargain brand, but it’s not outrageous either. The Urban Daddy deal costs $100 to get, but the $150 you get is a nice jump. Orders take 24 hours to process and you have to use it by 3/3/13. (Yes, the picks combo is actually $160. Don’t need a comb? Want to flash your inner Dandy? They’ve got lapel flowers for $10. Meanwhile, those polo shirts are $65 a pop, and there are lots of pocket squares.)
J.Crew Factory: 40% off + extra 20% on $75+ w/ SCOREMORE

The Pick: Thompson Suit in Med. Grey – $180.00
It’s hard to find better in the low $200s, let alone well under. Note that the navy option is spitting out an absurdly long “estimated ship” time of March. Meanwhile, the 80% wool / 20% poly lightly marled dark grey from last year is down to a beyond nice $151.20. That’s “first suit & I don’t have a ton of money” territory. Pretty sure most of us wish our first suits felt like and were cut similar to the Thompson. Code SCOREMORE + promotion expires 12/16/12.
Bonobos
: Extra 30% off Sale w/ YULELOOKGREAT

The Picks: Woolrich Tweed Jacket – $175 ($450), Lambswool Blend Scarf – $29.40 ($60), Cashmere Scarf in Navy & Red College Stripe – $49 ($108), Eastland Sherman Suede Boot – $105 ($225)
Many times it’s just an extra 25% off sale. Other times there’s spending thresholds. This time around it’s an extra 30% off and you can go as low as you want, as long as it’s already on sale. The pants are a bit picked over (except for those flannel lined lumberslacks, now $55), but there are some real gems lurking. Such as that investment Woolrich 3-button for $175. Ninja service and free shipping both ways of course. Code expires today, 12/13/12.
LastCall: Extra 40% off Select Items Sale

The Picks: Magnanni Burgundy Lace up, Cap Toe Oxford, or Single Monk – $179.40
For plenty, this trio falls in that range between More than Slightly – Dead Sexxxy. Yes, the toes are slightly chiseled, but they’re far from Frankenstein shoe blunted squares. Part of the extra 30 – 50% off LastCall sale that’s going on right now, with shoes getting an extra 40% off. $180 seems fair for Magnanni, and those burgundy lace ups nail that sharp simplicity thing.
Ernest Alexander: 20% off site wide w/ DAPPERED20

The Picks: Spencer Nylon Brief – $72 ($225), Anderson Duffel – $68 ($195), Chocolate Wax Flask – $40 ($50),
Well that’s awfully nice of them. The guys at Ernest Alexander wanted to make up for sending a more expensive bag for review (there’s nothing to make up for) so they’re offering a 20% off code that’s good site wide through Friday. As BorrowedSuits put it in the comments: “This is why I can’t have nice things…they’re ****ing expensive.” Yeah. Lots of times they are. But with the 20% off code, some of their small goods start to fall into the realm of possibility. That code also makes a few items in their sale section real hard to pass up. Thanks again to Ernest Alexander for providing the Bedford Overnight Bag for giveaway, and now this code. Expires 12/14/12. Free shipping on all domestic orders.
Hexadactyly Bonus – J. Crew: 30% off & free shipping no min. w/ WISHLIST

The Picks: Ludlow Corduroy Sportcoat – $96.60 ($188)
Just launched this morning. Not just sale items either. 30% off “every purchase” EXCEPT FOR… Men’s suiting and some 3rd party merch. But sportcoats are up for grabs. And their Ludlow cord sportcoat in Graphite and Navy are already marked down. The extra 30% off drops them under $100 shipped. Last year’s version was outstanding. Here’s to hoping this year’s is just as good. Full review of the 2011 cord sportcoat from J. Crew can be found here. WISHLIST expires Mon. 12/17/12.
Also worth a mention: Banana Republic, GAP, and Old Navy are all doing 30% off through today w/ HOLIDAY. Park & Bond has launched their winter sale. French Connection is taking an extra 50% off sale styles with FCGIFTS, which make this waxed jacket ($100? Navy? …nice) and this 100% wool tweed blazer ($150) tempting… careful though, those are final sale.
Just got an email that Banana Republic Factory is doing 50% off everything and a coupon came with the email for an extra 15% off for December 15/16. Sounds pretty good to me…
I jumped on the wool/poly Thomson a few weeks ago and was terribly disappointed. The weird low button stance aside, the fabric seemed a lot like my college graduation gown — super thin, scratchy, noisy, and you could easily see through the jacket and pants. It was such a let down I thought J Crew was playing a joke on me and set me a halloween costume set. I’m dying for a dark grey suit, but now I’m turned off of the Thompson completely 🙁
Nima, your experience is spot on to mine. I jumped on the sale too, and I barely even wanted to try the jacket on once I unwrapped it. I’m returning it asap. I went with the BR charcoal suit during their 50% off day a few weeks before, and couldn’t be happier.
I’m all over that Woolrich Tweed Bononbos Jacket. Ordered some super cheap Travel Pants while I was there. Been looking for a great tweed jacket for sometime now – hope this fits the bill.
Interesting. I purchased it last year, and love it still. I didn’t have extremely high expectations for the fabric, so wasn’t disappointed. I have felt far worse, personally, and feel it stacks up favourably with many off-the rack competitors at much higher price-points, and I would certainly never remotely call it see-through. I actually appreciate the lightness of the fabric, as it makes it more viable in warmer temperatures or hotter venues.
In my opinion the fit is excellent on my admittedly slightly long-torsoed frame, and I have received many compliments on it. It seems to me like a much more expensive suit.
Makes me wonder if they’ve changed it since last year, somehow… I know everyone has different standards and expectations, though, so it’s likely that. It’s too bad this one didn’t do it for you guys!
That said, I’m sure the BR would be far superior, but even at 50% off, I imagine it was a fair step above in terms of pricepoint. Likely worth the investment, though.
Cheers,
Ben
You’re right Ben. I think I paid $300 for the BR suit, but it was SO worth it as it fits like a dream right off the rack – no tailoring needed. I’m actually hanging onto the navy Thompson pants (Joe ain’t kidding about the absurdly long wait for the jacket) with hopes that somehow the navy will please me. I’d really like to LIKE this suit.
Very fair. In my experience it’s NEVER worth paying less if you’re not totally happy with the product. Yes, there’s always some way anything could be better (and there’s always a pricier option that improves), but if something actually bugs you… it doesn’t matter how much you save, it’s always going to bug you (unless it can be easily tailored away). When something works, though, it just works.
I’m keen to hear what you think when you finally receive your Navy jacket. I, too am interested in the 100% wool and probably would have pulled the trigger on the Navy had it not been for the absurd backorder time. That said, I’m wondering if it’s not just worth waiting on a big BR sale and going that route. It seems they’ve really overhauled their suiting in 2012. At least then I can try in store.
Cheers,
Ben
BTW – Bonobos has some of their jeans on sale too. Selvedge, slim-straight fit, dark and only $68.60 with the discount. Mine should be arriving today!

BR Factory stores manipulate their prices to account for sales, so the “50% off everything” part leaves me underwhelmed. The extra 15% is nice, but I get 30% off coupons (for cardholders) in my email all the time.
How are the J. Crew Thompson pants? Would they be classified as “slim fit”?
Not as slim as the jackets (or at least that’s my experience.) They might need some hacking done by your tailor.
That’s wild. I wonder if they’ve changed their fabric since last year? They haven’t changed the pics on their site. I really liked the fabric when it was ordered for the in person (closer up here: https://dappered.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/JCrew-Factory-Suit-Sleeve.jpg )
As far as the button stance, they’re pretty close to most of their ludlow jackets from the main line. Just got a new ludlow blazer, and while I like the lower button stance on it, you can tell that overall, designers are going to be rebounding now and raising that button stance back up. At least, that’s what I’m thinking will happen since it can’t get all that much lower.
If you can hang on for a big BR sale and nab their navy suit separates for a bit discount, then go that route. I like the Thompson. Really do. But the fabric on the BR is fantastic. Button stance is a little higher too, but not absurdly high. Right in a sweet spot for most. Same goes for the lapels. Not too huge, not too slim. It’s pretty timeless in a nice athletic cut.
A disappointing list. I’m sick of JCrew & Bonobos. How about some new different brands like Gant, Gitman, Todd snyder, Sid Mashburn, etc. I like this site but lately it feels like the same stuff recycled
Code is not working. Is there anyone? I refuse to pay full price on GILT and for anything this time of the year.
Hmm the comments section lately has been losing some of its sense of propriety. I agree with the basic premise of what you said, but I will attempt to reword it in a way that makes people more likely to respond positively to you:
“The Bonobos are J.Crew wares seem a bit worn out this year. Have you considered reviewing brands such as Gant, Gitman, Todd Snyder, Sid Mashburn, etc? They are often a bit outside of the Dappered price range but offer a really nice selection.”
Let me guess: suits are excluded? SMH
I should have phrased it better and do appreciate your efforts on this site. Ive made some great purchases thanks to this site. I rely on sites like this and my Svvply for my wardrobe needs. I’m the first to admit that I’m not an expert and don’t usually have the time to find new stuff. Thanks for your hard work and I look forward to seeing some new finds on here
Excellent. I think I’ll go that route. The also have some pretty tantalizing lighter grey options which I’m torn between vs. the navy. Ah, patience, my precious, patience.
I’ve noticed that too. I’ve been getting emails everyday this week that say TODAY ONLY 30% OFF!! But it’s like the boy who cried wolf because, sure enough, I get the same one the next day.
Gant pants for $275? Sid Mashburn shirts for $195? Gitman ties for $100?
I feel like you’re forgetting the “affordability” part of Dappered’s mission.
To be fair a $465 bag was reviewed the other day, so at times quality takes precedence over price. I’m betting some of those items can be had for great deals on sale (I know I’ve seen Gant shirts for crazy sale in the past, as well as Gitman goods) and variety is the spice of life…
Mr. Woosley, I appreciate your nice response to my previous comment. Perhaps you can let Joe know if any of those brands are having a great sale sometime? Or join us over at threads.dappered.com and keep us posted in the Deals Around the Net thread. I know I would be curious.
I enjoy saving money like everyone else. I tend to buy brands like Gant, Theory, Snyder, Mashburn when they are on sale. I rarely pay full price. I also get my Brooks Brothers sweaters whenever they are on sale. I think its a better investment to buy from some of the higher tier brands if you care for your clothes as they tend to last longer than stuff from BR or J Crew. I will keep everyone updated when some of this stuff goes on sale, but the MR Porter sales are usually pretty good. Stores like Barneys & Nordstroms also have sales around this time of year. I will post in the forum when I see these brands on sale.
I WANT that Sheppard Shetland Jacket in the gordon check pattern! That looks killer. I’ve never worn French Connection, how is their sizing? I’m a 38 in JCrew and most others.
Does anyone have the J Crew sportscoat? I’m looking at the graphite on the website but the picture makes it look brown-ish. I assume graphite would be a shade of gray?
Click on the little graphite color square; the model is wearing a
brownish coat, but clicking on the square will pull up a photo of the
correct color.
This makes me wonder about consistency in the suit making process, because I also got the Thompson for Black Friday and I feel like MC Hammer with those pants.
