The Thursday Handful – 11/15/12

November 15, 2012 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier.  Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look.  Those are what make up these handfuls.  Expect these things when necessary.  Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below.  Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
.

J. Crew: Extra 30% off SALE items w/ MUSTHAVE
Code MUSTHAVE expires Sunday 11/18/12.

The Picks: Workwear Jacket – $112 ($168), Leather Gloves – $54.60 ($88), Billykirk Briefcase – $259 ($380)

Yes, it’s no surprise that you’re seeing the J. Crew sale (and Factory sale below) here.  But as expected, J. Crew claims they’ve added over 150 items to the sale section.  There’s more than a few worthwhile picks lurking in there.  The Workwear jacket is a herringbone cotton that looks a  little like a lighter version of what 007 wore in Scotland.  The gloves are available in three colors (saddle shown) and are cashmere lined.  And points to J. Crew for including a few more “in good company” items, like this made in the USA padded briefcase from Billykirk.  Shipping is a flat $8.95 until $175, which at that point it becomes free.

J.Crew Factory: 30% off + Free shipping no min w/ SCOREMORE
Code SCOREMORE expires Tues. 11/20/12

The Pick: Washed Gingham Shirt – $20.65 (was $29.50)

One of the better offers out of the J. Crew camp in a long time.  30% off, no spending threshold, and you get free shipping no minimum.  Need a new shirt with some pattern to layer under sweaters and sportcoats?  Sure thing.  This washed gingham is now less than $21.  Shipped.  A great code for those of us who buy one piece at a time.

Bonobos: Extra 25% off Sale w/ 25EXTRA
New items have just been added.

The Picks: Baja Travel Jeans – $58.50 ($98), Jack Spade York Brief – $129 ($245), Greystokes – $74.25 ($175)

Tis the season for extra % off Sale Section codes.  Like J. Crew, Bonobos just injected some new stock into their sale section, so at post time there’s a surprisingly wide array of sizes to pick from.  The 5-pocket travel jeans in tan are a perfect cure for the common khaki (should probably trademark that…), the Jack Spade dipped york brief is down to a terrific price of $130, and the Italian wool Greystokes are now $100 off.

Lands’ End / Lands’ End Canvas: 40% off one item w/ JOLLY & 1112
Summer can take its time getting here.

The Picks: 628 Straight Fit Moleskin Pants – $42.00 ($70), OR 628 Straight Fit USA Jeans – $58.80 ($98)

Lands’ End was just doing a 30% off everything F&F sale, which is great for buying more than one item at a time, but their 40% off one item sales are like the J. Crew Factory sale.  If you go one item at a time instead of buying in bulk, then it’s worth the wait.  A heads up:  sizes are starting to get a little scarce for the Made in the USA Jeans.  Review of the denim over here with fit comparisons to their slimmer 608 fit.  Code expires Monday, 11/19/12.

Four641 Vintage Collection
Hm….

The Picks: Vintage French Police Coat – $149.50, Vintage Italian Map Case – $27.99

Not so much a sale as more of an odd discovery.  Never heard of this outfit until yesterday.  Anybody?  Thoughts?  They appear to be a shop that specializes in photography based in Delaware.  And they’ve launched a line of vintage-goods that they’ve… somehow come across.  Interesting explanation from the owner/founder, Nic, who while searching out rare film and cameras often came across strange characters looking to move some other vintage goods.  See the email we exchanged here.

    J. Crew Slim fit shirts fit me pretty well, not sure how the classic fit will treat me.

Has anyone noticed significant bleeding from the LEC jeans? I’ve washed mine which they say locks in the color, but I have a wallet fade mark on the rear pocket and a white leather seat which is now blue…

I really need something like that Italian map case…I’ve been looking for a camera bag that isn’t one of the generic looking nylon ones.

    Any suggestions?

every factory tie falls to $10 and change shipped. that’s way better than the tie bar who is probably the standard bearer for cheap ties. will report back on the quality.

Think Tank retrospective series (a range of sizes), anything by Billingham, Domke’s oilcloth bags, and Ona Bags. I have the ThinkTank Retrospective 30 and it’s excellent.

Grabbed a few pair of the glen plaid slacks from Bonobos yesterday, hope they look good in person. With the discount, I can live with $75-90 for a pair of slacks that don’t need tapering.

Refinery 29 has $100 of Club Monaco credit for $50. You can buy two. Can only use online and one coupon at a time and cannot stack with student discount. Must use the $100 in one fell swoop. Still seems like a good deal to me.

Have any of you athletic types tried those 628 moleskin pants? I’ve got Serena Williams thighs and fear they might get a little snug. They look a little tight in the Land’s End shots compared to the 628 USA denim on the same model. For reference, I’m a 501 jeans kinda fit.

Has anyone ever owned those J.Crew gloves? How is the quality of them and how bulky are they? I really wanted to get some Dents Hairsheep leather ones, but man that price isn’t Dapper enough :p The J.Crew sale here seems more reasonable, but I don’t want a pair of crap gloves (within reason).

30% off AND free shipping at J. Crew factory? How can I say no!?

  23. Jayy says

    November 15, 2012 at 9:58 AM

Joe, why do you keep stating the factory 30% off code is good for buying one piece at a time? There is no purchase limit. There is free shipping. I dont think you understand the rarity of this code. The amount you are discounted obviously increases with the more you spend… so why not pick up 3 washed shirts. Or a couple ties. Hell maybe some boxers. Just saying

  24. Andy says

    November 15, 2012 at 10:14 AM

If you have thighs like Serena Williams, I’m amazed you can find a pair of Levi’s that fit you, I’ve had no luck with their jeans that fit me both in the waist and thighs without being ridiculous constricting, same for the very nice looking LEC denim too unfortunately.

  25. Ian says

    November 15, 2012 at 10:23 AM

That’s not how I read it–I think he’s just mentioning that with no minimum for free shipping, there’s no disincentive for only buying one or two things. Even with a 30% discount, I wouldn’t normally have bothered ordering a $15 belt, but I leapt on it this time since shipping is free.

The fit of this shirt is “regular” and not “slim” however, there is a “slim version also available on the site which is a great slim fit.

With the discount, I snagged a few Lands’ End tailored fit dress shirts for less than $13 each. They’re a lot less billowy this year than in years past; I won’t need them taken in at all. If you do need them taken in, they’re still really inexpensive for very high quality fabric and a few decently conservative patterns/colors.

  40. Bryan says

    November 15, 2012 at 2:18 PM

I have washed mine 4+ times and they still bleed blue on my hands when wearing all day.

  41. Ian says

How are the arms? My experience is that the arms are usually super baggy.

  42. Mark Johnson says

    November 15, 2012 at 2:28 PM

I got the LEC tweed top coat that was mentioned last time they had 40% any one item, and it’s pretty nice. The fabric is real tweed, woven in the British Isles – the union jack trademark “woven in the British Isles” is sewn into the lining.
The tailoring is pretty nice – it’s definitely designed to be a top coat but the fit is reasonably tailored. If you don’t plan on wearing it over a jacket, maybe size down, but it fits great over a sport coat at normal size – snug but not too tight (except the sleeves are long but that’s an easy and cheap fix). I think the fabric is seriously nice, but I really like tweed – the base is a charcoal and brown herringbone pattern but there are all kinds of color highlights – blue-grey, yellow and green. It’s definitely not your standard black or grey overcoat. Very nice for $150.

Didn’t find anything for me, but I actually found a dress for my wife with the 30% off Factory sale.

  48. bryclops says

    November 15, 2012 at 4:08 PM

Mine weren’t the Canvas ones, just Lands’ End, which only has Tailored and Regular fit, I think. I found them by clicking into the “Sale” section of Lands’ End, and I got several by using a now-expired code. I had to comment, though, because I was surprised by the quality and fit. Here’s an example of one of the shirts I ordered: http://www.landsend.com/pp/mens-spread-collar-tailored-solid-no-iron-pinpoint-dress-shirt~240700_59.html

Speaking of the fit, the arms have gotten significantly slimmer. They’re just fine for me, though I generally can’t wear BR sportcoats because the arms are too slim for me. You might have to get them taken in if you run more on the slim side.

  49. aqwayne93 says

    November 15, 2012 at 4:50 PM

Oph that French Police Coat… it looks big on the guy though, will probably look too baggy on me. I wish they put more information regarding the fit on the website.

  50. Bo says

    November 15, 2012 at 4:53 PM

Some of those items on the vintage website look sweet, but I’m worried that the Soviet training sneakers (which do look cool) are too far leaning toward street style versus classic style? Might go for it still though, to inject some color with more neutral jeans/outfits….

  51. gregsir says

    November 15, 2012 at 8:47 PM

Does anyone have any experience with the J. Crew cotton cashmere sweaters? For $24 after the promo code, I might take a shot on one.

  53. arvasque says

    November 16, 2012 at 12:03 AM

I’m taking a chance and hoping I’m able to pull this look off. You just don’t see a jacket like this everyday. Wish their site was a bit more descriptive on fit, but it looked like a decent fit for that style based on their pictures.

  54. patrick says

    November 16, 2012 at 2:46 PM

I own the slim cotton cashmere shirt. It’s got a nice texture and looks good, but it’s kind of thin. Construction seems a little iffy, too, and I’m constantly worried that I’ll tear it. Of course, I’ve never owned a really “nice” sweater, so maybe all sweaters are like this.

For $24, though, not a bad deal.

  55. Alex says

Trying out the Gingham shirts. Way too cheap to pass.

  56. elias says

    November 19, 2012 at 9:23 PM

i got one and it was terrible. not better than just cotton. in fact it was worse. thin fabric, bad fit, i returned it.
