The Friday Handful – 11/9/12

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier.  Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look.  Those are what make up these handfuls.  Expect these things when necessary.  Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below.  Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

J.Crew Factory: 20% off & free shipping of orders $100+ w/ HAULPASS
Grey, black, and garnet. 3 other colors to consider after navy & camel.

The Picks: Three Solid Merino V-Necks – $82.80 ($103.5)

Is this the end of 30% off J. Crew Factory items?  20% is nice, but when you have to tip a $100 balance and add on top the fact that we’re all used to those 30% off J. Crew Sale / Factory item codes… then it’s certainly a switch.  Meanwhile, for the picks, it’s putting all of your sweater eggs in one brand basket, but the Merino V-necks from J. Crew Factory have worked out just fine for a few of us.  They do suffer from some piling after awhile, but they’re a terrific medium-thickness, well made, and even the non-slim fit is decently trim at the sides.  Featured as the go-to sweater in this year’s $1500 wardrobe.  Breaks down to $27.60 per sweater, shipped, after the code.

JC Penney: Various markdowns on their new jcp line
Ships to your door, free, over $50 w/ JCPSHIP

The Picks: Dark Wash Jeans – $22 ($30), Gingham Poplin – $20 ($25), OCBD – $20 ($25)

If you missed it over in the $1500 wardrobe “shirts” post, it looks like the jcp brand is getting handed their first price cuts.  Their outstanding $25 oxfords are now $20, their great for $30 jeans are now $22, and a few other items are marked down as well.  There’s also some new items that have been added to the line.  Yes they’re basics, but they fit well, are well made, and without the sale they’re incredibly affordable.  Overview of the jcp line can be found here.  Ships free at $50 to your door with code JCPSHIP.

Brooks Brothers:  Veterans Day Online Clearance Event
Been eyeballin’ these for a bit.

The Picks: Buckle Waxed Jacket – $134.40 ($448) | Unstructured cotton blazer – $74.40 ($248)

Wow this one is a haystack.  And the needles are in there, but it all depends on your size.  The buckle front jacket is waxed and “tailored for a slimmer fit” … but it’s probably best to ignore that “machine wash” part in the description.  That might: A. do some damage to those metal buckles and B. machine washing waxed canvas isn’t the best idea.  The unstructured blazer has the potential to be a major quality upgrade over the Merona Kensington from Target.  Fit is unknown though.  Good size selection for the waxed jacket.  Blazers down to L-XXL.

Last Call: 40% off one item.  Free shipping at $75 w/ LCNOV75
A slim toe waterproof wingtip.

The Pick: Sebago Hamilton Waterproof Wingtip Boot – $105.00 ($175)

Been awhile since these got a mention.  Did a full review about a year ago and they seemed at the time to be a home run for many.  The obvious key detail is that they’re waterproof.  They’re not a big fat pair of Sorels (these aren’t insulated at all) but as long as the temps stay reasonable and you wear wool socks, these could get you through most of winter looking better than most.  Very grippy sole.  Leather isn’t as supple as most, but that’s because they’ve been waterproofed.  Also available in black.  $175 through Sebago.

L.L. Bean / L.L. Bean Signature: 10% off w/ NOV10
One of the warmest suits out there.

The Pick:  L.L. Bean Signature Searsport Flannel Blazer & Pant – $288.00 ($320)

Yes, you guys have seen this one plenty.  But it’s as warm and as tough as it gets at this price.  Does suffer from some awfully long sleeves and those damn functional sleeve buttons.  It appears that some LLBean email list people got an email with a 15% off clickthrough one-time-use code, so this drops to $272 with that.  Full review here.  Part of this year’s tweed suit roundup.  Ships free.  Also worth a look: their Maine Lodge boots, now down to $63 with the code.

BONUS = Rugby: Extra 20% off sale + free shipping w/ INSIDERFALL
Made in Italy & Made in Scotland.

The Picks: Lambswool Striped Scarf or Lambswool Plaid Scarf – $33.32 ($59.50)

By now,  most seem to know that Ralph Lauren is shutting down their Rugby brand in early 2013 (thanks to all who sent in the style tips).  So stay tuned for more price slashing.  For now, these are worth a good hard look if you want a new bold scarf for winter.  Made in Italy for the striped, made in Scotland for the plaid.  The extra 20% off happens with the code INSIDERFALL, and the free shipping no minimum is a very nice add on.

Also worth note:  Lands’ End / L.E.C. has launched their 30% off everything Friends & Family event.  Use the code FRIENDS and pin 3010 to get the discount plus free shipping no minimum.  GAP is also doing a 30% off F&F event with code GAPFRIENDS.  Banana Republic has 30% off full priced items with BRSAVE30.  They also have a Friends & Family event going on for Luxe cardholders good for 50% off up to 5 full priced items in store.  Bonobos is offering 25% off orders of $175 and up with the code BOLDFORCOLD.  Macy’s just launched a one day sale which runs through Saturday 11/10.
