Would you wear it? The $58 Corduroy Suit

October 29, 2012 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Jos. A. Bank Tailored Fit Corduroy Suit – $58.00 (or $49 per if you buy two or more)

UPDATE:  These are apparently polyester.  Yep.  Polyester corduroy…   Thanks to ColoradoGuy and BTP for taking the time to note this in the comments.  Damn.

Enormous tip of the cap to D.R.S.R. (dappered roving style reporter) Alan S. who sent in the style tip on this one.

Is Merril Hoge doing their tie knots for them?

Hm.  So it’s from their tailored fit line, but still might require work by your tailor.  Shoulder pad thickness/strength is unknown.  Lapels and button stance look decent, and there’s four colors to pick from.  6″ drop on jackets from 38 – 43.  That means take the jacket size, and subtract 6 to get the pant waist.  5″ drop on 44 – 48.  4″ drop from 50-52.  And they come un-hemmed so your tailor can finish them off with your preferred break.

Shipping to your door is a steep $10.95.  And you’re on the hook for returns, but it does appear you can return in-store for free.  Appears to be a “deal of the day” type of promotion, so who knows if the price expires at 11:59pm.

Worth making a run at?  Or are you staying as far away from corduroy suits as possible?  Leave it all below.

    What color would you suggest?

  2. Alan Skinner says

    October 29, 2012 at 3:31 PM

I ordered two (tan and brown) and will likely keep at least one. The brown is nice and dark. Not that “old man brown”. For the price, I’m willing to gamble… But I’m one of those guys that’s willing to forgive the shoulders on a Tommy Hilfiger suit from macy’s when they’re on really good sales.

BTW, you can order to the store for cheaper than you can order to your house, but you might have to call the store in order for them to arrange the sale. It might be safer that way, anyway. It’s what I did.

  3. Austin says

    October 29, 2012 at 3:32 PM

    No, I would not.

  4. Alan Skinner says

    October 29, 2012 at 3:33 PM

If shoulders are a concern, you can try sizing down. It didn’t work for me, but I’m not super skinny. Or just play the safe bet and order multiple sizes. Just return whatever doesn’t work.

  5. TominDC says

    October 29, 2012 at 3:35 PM

They don’t have any in my size, or I’d be sorely tempted to buy them to see if they’ll work as separates.

  6. Alan Skinner says

    October 29, 2012 at 3:37 PM

As usual, black is least preferable. My personal favorite is tan, but choosing between brown and olive as a second choice is hard. I finally settled on brown because I think it will mix/match easier with other stuff I own. Unlike wool suits, you can probably break up a corduroy suit to wear the jacket separately (or even the pants separately if you wear them with another jacket).

  7. Daniel Judge says

    October 29, 2012 at 3:42 PM

I took the gamble too on tan and brown. Hopefully they work out ok.

I don’t see the reason for getting two corduroy suits, personally. just because my grocer has 3 for $5 frozen california pizza kitchen pizzas doesn’t mean i need to get three. i only need one pizza.
interested to hear the word on these, though. I would try one (and only one) for that price – especially since my tailor is pretty inexpensive!

  9. Matt B says

    October 29, 2012 at 3:55 PM

    What’s the jacket length like?

  10. Alan Skinner says

    October 29, 2012 at 4:03 PM

Grabbing two suits hedges your bets because you can always return one. And I see your point about two suits, but you can break them up. What about two pairs of pants? Or two sportcoats? FWIW, the $8 saved isn’t that big of a deal. Eariler, it was $80 for one or $100 for two so the decision was easier.

  11. Alan Skinner says

    October 29, 2012 at 4:03 PM

If they’re anything like the other “tailored fit” suits I saw in the store, they’re perfectly average in terms of length.

  12. Andrew says

    October 29, 2012 at 4:16 PM

I’m still waiting to see if my Uniqlo corduroy jacket works. It’ll be a few days for me, but any chance the review will be up today, so we can pounce on this if needed?

  13. Nick P says

    October 29, 2012 at 4:16 PM

I’m torn as to whether or not I should order one, and if I should go with 38R or 36R since they don’t have the 37. Not to mention that I haven’t found a tailor yet (recently started growing up with my style) to get the pants finished. Not to mention I’m a 30×32 and am afraid that the pants might be too small for the 36 or too large with the 38. … what to do?

  14. Alan Skinner says

    October 29, 2012 at 4:25 PM

    Get both. Return one. Done.

  15. Nick P says

    October 29, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Ahh, to make it worse, they have other suit options as well, a twill, in Navy/Tan/Brown/Olive with a 37R but only in tan/brown. http://www.josbank.com/menswear/shop/Product_11001_10050_336529

  16. Jeremy Brooks says

    October 29, 2012 at 4:33 PM

Based on other suits I have purchased there, I would say nope. Not to mention their marketing materials:

    REGULAR $495 NOW $58!!!!

Come on. Are people still falling for that?

  17. Dave says

    October 29, 2012 at 4:35 PM

If you live near a brick and mortar store they will deliver the suit to the store for $6 instead of the $10.

  18. Andrew Mitchell says

    October 29, 2012 at 4:46 PM

My father used to work at an upscale dry cleaners in a ritzy part of town. He has told me time and time again NEVER to get anything from Jos. A. Bank as it can’t hold up to dry cleaning. They had to buy more of those suits than any other because they fall apart while being cleaned. So, for me this is a no go.

  19. Justin says

    October 29, 2012 at 5:13 PM

I’m a manager at JAB, this is a decent set, especially for the money. This one and the Cotton Twill will usually go on ~$60 sale together. I personally prefer the twill. They both need some tailoring, but not bad OTR. I’ll start sending in the great sounding Deal of the Days as they arise, some are honestly too good for me to pass up.

  20. Redford says

    October 29, 2012 at 5:25 PM

No 39S? Boo. At least they have the odd numbered chest sizes.

  21. Joe says

    October 29, 2012 at 6:23 PM

The post does say “the $58 corduroy suit”, which is the price for one.

  22. Joe says

    October 29, 2012 at 6:24 PM

Yeah… markup is pretty insane there.

  23. Joe says

    October 29, 2012 at 6:26 PM

As with most affordable (or, extremely affordable suits) dry cleaning as little as possible is a must. Now with a cotton suit like this, I’m thinking the construction is going to be a little different, it’ll wear a little different (maybe worse?) etc… Got one on the way. If it self destructs after a few wears assuming I keep it, you guys will be the first to know.

  24. Travis says

    October 29, 2012 at 6:31 PM

    Love the Merril Hoge reference.

  25. Archie says

    October 29, 2012 at 6:44 PM

The side vents make this very tempting. If I take it to the tailor, he should be able to work with it. Decision made, I’m on it.

  26. JacksonNC says

    October 29, 2012 at 7:16 PM

I’m tempted to get one myself.

  27. BTP says

    October 29, 2012 at 7:48 PM

Word of warning: these are 98% polyester, 2% spandex.

  28. Anotherjames says

    October 29, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Where are you seeing this information? I don’t see any material listed (which makes it suspect.) Thanks.

  29. Anotherjames says

    October 29, 2012 at 8:14 PM

Are the pants pleated? What is the fabric make-up (synthetic? 100% cotton, etc?).

  30. Alan Skinner says

    October 29, 2012 at 8:19 PM

Considering this suit currently costs as much as the cotton twil suit and cotton is a very common materiel for corduroy, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this suit is cotton.

  31. ColoradoGuy says

    October 29, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Joe — I actually noticed this exact deal a couple of weeks ago and ordered it in a few sizes/colors just to be safe. Surprise! The suit is corduroy all right, but the material isn’t cotton at all. It’s … wait for it … 98 percent polyester!! (Yes, you read that right.) The website didn’t mention that when I placed my order, and I mistakenly assumed that corduroy = cotton. Keep that little fact in mind when making a decision.

As for the “tailored” fit, the jacket isn’t half bad, but the pants are extremely voluminous. The price is certainly attractive, but you’ll probably want to budget just as much money for alterations to the pants as for the jacket, if not more. Again, you can’t beat the price, but the polyester material combined with the fairly baggy pants makes it likely that I will pass in the end.

  32. ColoradoGuy says

    October 29, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Sorry to break the news to everyone, but it’s not cotton. Polyester — 98 percent polyester, to be exact. For more info, see my reply higher up in the thread. (I actually saw this deal online a couple weeks ago and I currently have the suit(s) in my possession.)

  33. ColoradoGuy says

    October 29, 2012 at 8:42 PM

OK, so I actually didn’t “break” the news — BTP did. I’m just confirming what he said. The material is not mentioned on the site, but I am reading it directly off the tags.

my apologies – I didn’t mean to come off as rude or troll-like! I was targeting my comment more towards the parentheses, as well as Alan’s topic on Dappered threads.

  35. BTP says

    October 29, 2012 at 9:28 PM

From the tags on the one I bought one about a month ago. It’s okay for what it is, but what it is is polyester. 🙁

  36. BTP says

    October 29, 2012 at 9:32 PM

This summarizes my experience with the suit, as well.

  37. Alan Skinner says

    October 29, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Can you verify what it’s made of?

  38. ColoradoGuy says

    October 29, 2012 at 9:41 PM

Alan — I promise you, the material is 98 percent polyester, 2 percent spandex. No cotton at all. I can say this with certainty because I ordered the suit in several sizes more than two weeks ago, and I have the tags right in front of me. I have never heard of polyester corduroy, but that’s what the label says. Even so, the feel is not too stiff, and the price is so low that it might be worth it for some.

  39. Joe says

    October 30, 2012 at 9:11 AM

    That’s… nuts. Updating above.

Hi Justin – Can you confirm that we can return for free in-store? Thanks!

  41. Don says

    October 30, 2012 at 12:06 PM

Does anyone have the cotton twill version and care to comment on it, mainly for the feel and thickness? Like some others, I saw this deal a few weeks and thought I’d go to the store to take a look before buying, but they said they didn’t have any (in fact, the salesman said he’d never even heard of it). Didn’t matter either way since by the time I got home they had sold out of brown and navy in my size. Now that it’s back just a few weeks later with those colors back in my size, I figure I’ll have the opportunity again at some point.

  42. MrF says

    October 30, 2012 at 1:11 PM

Price has jumped up to $79 on the poly cord suit. Still $49/each for two, though.

  43. LAB says

    October 30, 2012 at 8:28 PM

I own 2. At the price I figured why not for a beater suit. Got them at that price and figured if nothing I’ll have 2 sport coats. Turns out after tailoring they fit great. I mean I got compliments the first day I wore one of the jackets separately.
