Inexpensive suede almost always looks better than inexpensive leather (some evidence here and here.) But that wasn’t the case with the Urban Outfitters wingtip boots from last fall.
The cognac/almost orange pair of leather boots looked great and even got a nod in GQ. The suede on the other hand had some heavy burnishing at the toe and ankle. Not a deal breaker for a $50 on-sale boot, but not everyone’s style either.
Looks like UO has flipped the script on their two wingtip boot options for this fall.
This time around it’s the leather option that looks overly burnished. And the suede… man alive they have potential. Starting at $89 and you know they’re going to drop in price. Looked for these in-store, but they haven’t arrived at the Urban Outfitters closest to the Dappered Home Offices yet.
One potential hiccup would be the color. By now, most of us have ordered something online only to have it show up looking a few if not more shades off. The color is listed as “maroon.” That’s fine if they look like this in person… but how red are they really?
Standby for an in person since a pair is on the way for testing. If they’re as good as they look in the flesh, expect them to make the upcoming best affordable boots of the fall feature. Thinking they’ll play nicely with everything from a pair of jeans, a grey sweater, and a chambray shirt, all the way up to a thicker flannel or tweed suit layered over a v-neck.

Oh man! I forgot about the snuffleupagus! So thats what happened to him..,,,
I happened by the leather option in-store just a few hours ago. It was nice enough that it caught my attention from across the store, and it was surprisingly nice. The burnishing didnt seem too bad to me, and the color is actually a bit less cream-like in person, slightly more towards cognac, which is maybe why i didnt notice the burnish as much
The sole just ruins it for me somehow.
I would have preferred something a little more substantial (similar to what you see on the newer boots from Mr Bs @ Aldos).

It lacks a white vibram sole. It could double as a red velvet cupcake shoes for halloween.
I wouldn’t. Color would be hard for me to coordinate, but moreover I wear boots for inclement weather, which you shouldn’t do with suede.
Shouldn’t do with cheap suede. Decent suede holds its own.
Just bought two pairs of shoes (a pair of wingtip bucks and black cap toes to do relief duty for my Park Avenues) so I’m probably fine on shoes for now. That said if those get down towards fifty I’m there; the leather McGills I bought last season are some of my favorites. Though maybe I should take it easy on the wingtips.
Ronald McDonald is stepping up his style. Good for him. Seriously, that color is…unattractive, shall we say.
Based on one previous experience with UO wingtip boots I’d have to say I have very low expectations for these.
The color of the suede just doesn’t mesh with the wingtip design. No thanks.
I’m all for making your shoes pop, but this might be pushing it a bit far for my taste.
You kidding? Mine are going strong…
They go great with Don the Magic Juan’s wardrobe just not my own.
The dark sole ruins it…
would look great in my miata (not letting that go), like a common dandy

Not for me – I’m all for a 70s revival, but better Superfly than Rock Opera
The uppers are fine, but the heel gets worn down through to the wood incredibly quickly and severely. I still love mine (the brown suede), but taps are a must if you’re walking on the sidewalk frequently.
I bought the full grain boots for $50 about six months ago and my experience with them was pretty poor. The leather felt like plastic painted on to cardboard, while the fit was really, really uncomfortable. I had resigned myself to having to buy something much more expensive until JCP came out with their Stafford boot, which I am far happier with.
