J. Crew / Factory Extra 30% off Sale

September 4, 2012 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

J. Crew 30% off Sale with code MUSTSHOP

Takes 30% off factory sale items as well.  Careful of the “final” sale items though, you can’t return those.

J. Crew offered free shipping yesterday (Labor Day).  Which was nice.  This is better.  So we got that goin’ for us.

Stock is a little limited on the J. Crew side but there are some finds.  Factory has a bunch of their newer stuff “on sale” which is what you need for the code MUSTSHOP to work.  Keep an eye out for final sale items.
..

J. Crew Italian Wool Aldridge Suit Jacket & Pant – $370.97 ($650)
Might require a little extra work at the tailor.

So it’s not a Ludlow.  So what?  Lapels on suits are starting to widen out, jackets are getting a bit longer, and under $400 for a half-canvassed J. Crew suit is a steal.  That’s less than a Suit Supply.  These ship free and don’t appear to be final sale (but be careful, your size might be.)  The Ludlow has a 2.25″ lapel, shorter jacket, and is cut slimmer off the rack.  The Aldridge has a 2.75″ lapel, doesn’t have as short of a jacket, and comes with a little more room off the rack.  We’re talking half an inch for the lapel, and when it comes to the jacket… you’ll get it tailored anyway, right?  Pants might need some slimming for some.  Might be worth the risk of return shipping.

Ludlow Navy Herringbone Suit Jacket & Pant – $385.00 ($590)
There’s a serious lack of pants.

Oh but there’s a catch.  Tons of sizes in the jacket, but hardly any in the pant (35 was the smallest waist size as of post time.)  Too bad too.  Could have been a terrific steal at this sub $400 price.

J. Crew Broken in Long Sleeve Pocket Polo – $28.00 ($49.50)
Jersey. Not pique. Makes a world of difference.

It’s the poor or sweaty man’s rugby.  Super lightweight, under $30 (which is still kinda expensive, but it’s J. Crew… )  and a go-to shirt for those warmer than you had expected fall weekends.

J. crew Factory Thompson Suit Jacket & Pant – $207.20 ($336)
Less than an Alfani RED. Much, much better.

And there it is, the first real deep sale on the new J. Crew Factory Thompson suits.  100% wool, has a bit of a rougher texture to it, but for a shade over $200 it’s as good as it gets.  Minimal shoulder padding, nice off the rack contour, decently high arm-holes, good buttons, etc…  Pants can feel a little loose and might need some slimming.  Full review over here.  (Meanwhile, the 80/20 poly version has dipped under $200.  Most sizes are available on that one.)

J. Crew Factory 8-Wale Cord Blazer – $68.60 ($118)
Jeans. Really easy to wear with jeans.

Definitely more rugged than polished, but if you’re hooked on jackets, this is a casual one you can wear just about anywhere without looking dressed up.  Three button front, elbow patches, throat tab/latch, and thicker 8-wale (note: when it comes to corduroy, the higher the number of wale, the smaller the lines of cord.)  all make it more of a hunting style jacket than a dressed up blazer.  Great grey color.  Pretty sure a couple of you guys have this and seem to like it?

J. Crew Factory blue/white striped OCBD – $17.15 ($54.50)
Easy to layer basic.

Dirt cheap at seventeen bucks.  Don’t worry too much bout the logo.  Use it as a layering shirt.  Under v-necks, under blazers, under cardigans (if you’re the man-cardigan type), whatever.  Lots of sizes.

J. Crew Factory Tweed Sportcoat – $110.60 ($198)
Last year’s blazer. 70% wool, 30% nylon.

Now a little lower than what it was during the extra 30% off sale from last month.  Word is the Herringbone Sportcoat is lacking in quality.  Anyone get their hands on this one yet?  Got one on the way for an in-person.  Shown is last year’s model, which was outstanding.  Full review of that one over this way.

The sale code MUSTSHOPT expires on Friday 9/7/12.  Again, be careful of the final sale stuff.

    The site says, ”
EXTRA 30% OFF FINAL SALE ITEMS WITH CODE MUSTSHOP.* *details”

Is it safe to assume then that, if the coupon works (for example, on the Thompson Suit) that it’s ineligible for returns?

  3. Shawn says

For anyone else as confused (or daft), as I was:

Danielle A: Even though the promotion applies to them does not make them final sale.
Danielle A: Final sale items will have a sentence appear in red after selecting your color and size. Final sale items usually end with $.99. They are also labeled final sale in your shopping cart.

  4. Joe says

    September 4, 2012 at 10:58 AM

Yep, that’s correct. This has been the case for as long as I can remember. I don’t know why they say “final sale” in all their graphics, just doesn’t make much sense. Sometimes an item won’t be final sale in one size, but will be final sale in another. It’s strange.

  5. Ian says

Anyone know if you can combine shipping between Factory and the main site?

Does anyone have experience with the Factory Merino Cardigan? Trying to decided whether or not to size down.

I bought a couple of the slim merino sweaters in medium, which fit perfectly. Wondering if a medium on the cardigan would be too baggy.

If you use an AMEX card nothing is final sale.

  10. BenR says

Have the corduroy jacket, love it. I really like the county-inspired details. Perfect for casual fall wear. The sleeves are a little long OTR.

  11. BenR says

    September 4, 2012 at 12:24 PM

If price is no issue, wool is superior. Wool is tougher and longer-lasting than synthetic.

Just a word of warning for anybody getting the OCBD, take Joe’s advice and only use it for layering. While searching for the right OCBD, I picked a couple up from J. Crew Factory and they were rife with placket puckering.
Amusingly enough, if you zoom in on the picture on the website, you can already see the placket starting to pucker.

I’m thinking of ordering the factory thompson suit but not sure of what waist size to get on the pants… my waist is 31″. I noticed Joe’s measurements have him at 34″ but he got 32″ for these pants. What do you guys think? Order a 30/30 or a 32/30?

What’s the big difference between the JCrew Tweed above ($110) and this one priced $298? I’m asking or an answer that’s deeper than “$188”! 🙂

That’s good news about the sleeve length! Is there any room to let them out more? I’m a medium, but I’m tall so the arms are probably still too short.

  17. John Giardiniere says

  18. Furious Styles says

I’m so tempted by the Thompson suit sale. I love my charcoal one a lot, but I have a couple of navy suits and a similar gray color already. Sigh…

  19. JimH says

    September 4, 2012 at 2:08 PM

Thanks for the heads up, I was looking at this one. How is the fit though? There’s not much of a description.

  20. Chet "The Rocket" Steadman says

    September 4, 2012 at 2:32 PM

Awesome. I took the plunge on the Factory Thompson in wool–my first suit from J. Crew. We’ll see how it compares to my other beater suits (Abboud, CK, etc.) that I typically pick up on sale from Lord & Taylor or Macy’s,

  21. TiggerMD says

    September 4, 2012 at 2:43 PM

Wow, awesome deal on the Thompson suits. Ordered those while opening a new JCrew card, and the price for the whole suit came out to $156.88. Too good of a deal, so I got it in charcoal and navy. And not final sale, which means I don’t have to worry about this thing not fitting and then being stuck with it.

  22. Farhan says

    September 4, 2012 at 3:29 PM

I got the tweed jacket during the last sale. I’m a 38R and it fit me perfectly. Only alteration I have to make is get the sleeves shortened an inch or so. It is a bit on the thicker side and is a bit itchy since it’s not fully lined. Still, it’s well worth the sale price.

  23. AlwaysBeenTim says

    September 4, 2012 at 3:35 PM

In general, I found the fit to be pretty good. Sleeves were spot on and it was pretty trim. My one fault with the size is that I thought it was a little short. I sometimes had an issue keeping the shirt tucked.
Keep in mind that I’m 6’4 with a solid gut so your mileage might vary.

  24. Matt says

    September 4, 2012 at 3:39 PM

FYI I have seen the Herringbone sport coat (referenced above) in person at a Factory store a little while back and was not impressed. Something looked a bit off in the pattern and construction…clunky maybe? Not sure I can put my finger on it.

  25. Maverick785 says

    September 4, 2012 at 4:05 PM

Can anyone who’s received the Thompson wool suit comment on their thickness and breathability? I actually got the Thompson in 80/20 during the last sale. While I’d love to send it back and upgrade to full wool and navy, I’m worried that it would feel pretty brutal on a typical South Florida day, whereas the 80/20 is a featherweight.

  26. Ed says

    September 4, 2012 at 4:06 PM

Anyone know if the “new” grey all wool Factory suit is significantly lighter in color than the “old” wool/poly grey suit?

  27. Iain says

    September 4, 2012 at 4:10 PM

Not quite. Chargeback happens when you dispute a charge, because of fraud/services not delivered as promised/etc. Amex cards offer purchase protection, which refunds your money if a merchant refuses to take an item back with 90 days. I haven’t yet used this benefit, but their customer service is generally excellent, and they recently gave me $79 dollars without question to buy a new laptop charger, which I claimed against the extended warranty benefit.
That said, repeatedly buying items on final sale and then asking Amex for a refund is likely to put some red flags on your account.

  28. Joe says

    September 4, 2012 at 4:30 PM

It looks like it leans closer to a medium to lighter grey, like the Indochino essential grey. The 2011 Thompson is pretty dark.

  29. Joe says

    September 4, 2012 at 4:33 PM

The J. Crew Factory is going to have some poly in there, and it’s not going to move quite (nearly?) as well as the full J. Crew blazer. The J. Crew version also uses wool from Moon Mills in England: http://www.moons.co.uk/ (if I recall correctly.) It’s nice. But I don’t know if it’s $200 extra nice.

  30. Andrew Mitchell says

    September 4, 2012 at 4:50 PM

Been looking at the Thompson suit ever since the first car wash pics floated up on Dappered. Finally pulled the trigger. We’ll call that an early birthday gift to me…

  31. JDH says

    September 4, 2012 at 5:01 PM

How did you get it for $156.88? The sale price on the wool version is $207.20 as Joe notes above, then an additional 10% for opening the card brings it to $186.48. The wool blend comes to about $174 including the 30% + 10% discounts.

  32. Jordan says

    September 4, 2012 at 6:45 PM

I’ve got both the Tweed and the Herringbone here. Herringbone isnt great quality and the shoulders are weird. The tweed fits awesome (38r) and seems to be made much better. The herringbone is going back.

  33. Joe says

    September 4, 2012 at 6:56 PM

Awesome. Well, not awesome that the herringbone stinks out the joint, but awesome that you have both and the Tweed seems to have been replicated from last year. Thanks Jordan…

  34. Calico says

    September 4, 2012 at 8:51 PM

I have regular sweaters from both J Crew and Factory, and a cardigan from each. The cardigans are definitely baggier (is that a word… help me out Grammar Nazi) than the regular sweaters. The arms may actually be a little longer too (but not by a ton), which could helpful if you choose to size down.

  35. Brad says

    September 4, 2012 at 9:32 PM

There is a picture of the suit, being modeled, in the “looks” section off the Factory home page (look nine in the mens section.) The color looks to be as Joe describes it. Medium/light gray.

  36. JimH says

    September 4, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Thanks for the update; that’ll help. The length shouldn’t be an issue, I’m 6 ft and gutless….wait…..did I say that?

  37. Kris says

    September 4, 2012 at 11:29 PM

Hey Joe! So, I have the 2011 Thompson, and am still deciding whether to keep it or send it back. I really do like the fit, and the more stylish cut… I don’t particularly like the poly blend feel to it though. I saw you’d posted the Indochino deal recently, and am considering getting a charcoal Indochino instead, but I wanted to ask your opinion between the two.

Do you (or anyone else) know if the Indochino is cut as modern/fashion forward as the Factory Thompson suits?

I figure after, tailoring, etc, that the Thompson suit would get me closer to the high 200’s, reaching closer to the $300 range at the end of it all. The Indochino deal being a bit more expensive off the bat at $320, but having the free shirt and tie, with tailoring included…That they’d be a similar cost price at the end of the day.

Which do you think is better though? Lets look at fabric, construction, and having a stylish fashion forward cut?

    Many thanks in advance!!

  38. Guest says

    September 5, 2012 at 2:17 AM

I also received the blend from the last sale (for ~30 more, but snagged a 36S) and its a
lot thinner and rough than I was expecting. Are the wool ones similar? Its a shame those dont come in charcoal.

  39. Guest says

    September 5, 2012 at 2:25 AM

I guess I shouldnt have waited on the navy suits, 36s doesnt ship until Oct and the 30/30 pants arent even listed any more!

  40. JRok says

    September 5, 2012 at 6:06 AM

I purchased an Indochino suit and had it remade and it was still horrible. The armholes were so awkward. Then the remake came in too short and still fit like crap. Total gamble with them. And there is no phone number for customer service. All email. I would avoid them and go to a local tailor.

  41. JRok says

    September 5, 2012 at 6:11 AM

Thompson suit doesn’t come in short sizes?

  42. Guest says

    September 5, 2012 at 6:59 AM

Some short sizes like 36s for sure, but its its not listed its sold out

  43. uncle joe landis says

    September 5, 2012 at 8:49 AM

The tweed blazer looks great in this pic. The one on the website makes it look like there’s some serious real estate between the top button and lapels. Weird.

  44. John Sharry says

    September 5, 2012 at 9:42 AM

Anyone have experience with the Factory Weekend Duffle Bag (http://www.jcrew.com/browse/single_product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTprd_id=845524441818549). The extra 30% brings it to $54. Worth it?

  45. djx says

    September 5, 2012 at 1:15 PM

Joe – Aldridge (and Ludlow which they price similarly) is half-canvassed? Are you sure?

  46. JDH says

    September 5, 2012 at 1:18 PM

This has been gnawing at me so I just contact J Crew online support and they told me you can’t combine discounts so 30% off is the best you can do. Can anyone confirm if they’ve been able to use the additional 10% when opening a card, or if they also picked up the suit for $156?

  47. Guest says

    September 6, 2012 at 7:33 AM

These stories always scare me away

  48. Guest says

    September 6, 2012 at 7:34 AM

Still kicking myself – is the medium grey worth getting?

  49. Maverick785 says

    September 6, 2012 at 9:40 AM

In the exact same boat. I ordered the medium grey to compare it in terms of color/feel to the dark grey poly Thompson. It’s such a bummer that the 30/30s seem to get gobbled up so much faster than the other sizes.

  50. Jesse says

    September 6, 2012 at 10:28 PM

Very. Bought mine for $75; it’s durable enough, and fairly natty. Roomy enough for a few days’ worth of garb easily; I packed a week of casual vacation clothes in it without trouble.

  51. Jesse says

    September 6, 2012 at 10:31 PM

I’ve had similar experiences; I’m 6’1″ and 150 lbs, but when it comes to J.Crew cardigans I take an XS (yes, XS) to get the proper fit.

  52. Kyle Joseph says

    September 13, 2012 at 11:06 AM

Thank you guys for the comments. I went with a Small, and it did the trick. Glad I sized down.

    Thanks again!
