Croton Silver
or Gold Minute Hand Japanese Quartz Watch – $59.49
w/ 15WTCH512
Code 15WTCH512 gets you 15% off watches plus free shipping. 15OFFMAY512 is good for $15 off orders over $50, SAVE20MAY9 gets you 20% off, but those lack free shipping ($6.99), and thus, aren’t the best deal.
Croton ain’t Cartier. Hell, they aren’t Citizen. But these two use Japanese quartz movements (the brand as a whole has used automatics from time to time) and they’re awfully classy looking at first glance.
But where’s the hour hand? You thought reading a blackout watch wasn’t the easiest thing in the world. These will take some getting used to. As you’ve already figured out, the hour hand is on the top 24-hour subdial.
Subtle stripes to the dial and very slightly raised subdial cutouts are both nice touches. The texture to the crown and the lizard-like embossing on the leather band (as opposed to the usual croc look) are also pluses.
But would you wear it if you were in the market for an ultra cheap dress watch? Leave your take below.

No. Buy a Timex or this Bulova below if you need a simple cheap dress watch. This Croton looks like one of the instruments on an airplane that you have no idea what it does.

Do you want the airplane to fly straight to your destination or do you want to stop at 2 other airports along the way?
No, the practicality loss is more than any style gain
Yeah Joe had it right in that other article
No, that’s just weird.
Technically, this is a regulator watch with a 24 hour subdial and a sub-seconds hand. That being said, it is quartz and ugly as sin.
True one-hand watches ONLY have an hour hand and represent a life a luxury where time does not really matter. Pompous, yes, but also with some flair of style. This is devoid of style.
Ever hear on the one armed fisherman? He caught a fish this big _____________]
the phrase “one hand wristwatch” pretty much answers the question for me.
Looks like I might be alone here, but eh, why not. I wouldn’t buy it, but if it was given to me I’d sport it form time to time.
Yeah, I don’t know. I like the look of the dials, but the single hand is just…weird ?
I am a fan regulators, but not this one in particular.
I have an Alpha automatic that is a little flashier than this one, and I get a lot of compliments on it.
It came with a black leather band, but as you see I traded it out for a red nylon strap; it brings out the red seconds hand of the sub-dial, and shows better contrast of the blued hour & minute hands.
It also has a crystal on the back to see the automatic movement.

Not for everyone, but definitely a nice change up from all the desk divers and G-Shocks.
Agreed
I do like this watch – it is a classic regulator look and I think it looks good for cheap. I probably wouldn’t wear it, its too hard to dress down and if I wanted a regulator I would probably get a Perpetual Watch automatic for not too much more.
I agree. Not because I particularly dislike the Croton (I actually think it looks pretty cool), but I’m planning on getting that Bulova. The two watches I wear at work both have the silver metal bands and I want something with black leather to work into the rotation.
I realize that most people use their cell phone for time and wear watches purely for style, but loss of functionality does not equal style in my opinion. You don’t want to be that guy who is addicted to his phone.
If you want a cheap dress watch, I’d go Skagen or Bulova. Sleak, low profile, never looks out of place.
I guess I’m in the minority here, but I think it’s a cool watch. I like the dial texture a lot. And I doubt it would be much effort to tell the time once you get used to the minute/hour configuration.
I wish the retailer mentioned the case size. I’ve stopped bothering with watches over 40mm.
I wish this silver dial had brown leather. i can never seem to find that combo in cheaper watches, and it is my favorite look. I want the bulova in brown and silver too…. gold is too “old-timer” in my opinion…. and I rarely wear black shoes, etc.
is this not a good combo? why isnt this option more widely available?
I like the colors and stripes. Would look so much better as a regular hour/minute hand watch
You can easily buy your own strap for $20 or less and change them out yourself.
I think it looks great.
Looks like a conversation starter to me
I like that Alpha a lot, in fact I like a lot of their stuff. One day I will get one of their Paul Newman hand-winders.
The Bulova is excellent for the money. The band is awfully thin, but it looks just fine and that’s easily replaceable.
These aren’t a what’s better type of post. It’s a way to show something different. So… y’know… that’s all it is. There is no “right” or “wrong” here.
It doesn’t evoke strong negative reactions in me. But it does leave me somewhat indifferent.
No no my friend, this… is ugly as sin: https://dappered.com/2012/02/anti-style-battle-dumb-watch-vs-indochino-paisley-shirting/
The Bullova mentioned above (and in a few posts here at Dappered already) is a very classy watch. I don’t wear it very often, as I like to save it for dressier occasions (it just feels that way to me), but it had gotten numerous compliments, even for that fairly cheap tag (I think I paid $90 or something, a while back at JCPenney). A very nice, simple-yet-elegant timepiece.
Touché, Joe.
I got the silver cased watch as a gift and do wear it occasionally.
You get used to the time telling system pretty quickly.
Although I do find it rather large on the wrist, but then I feel that way about most modern watches.
And I personally tend to lean towards automatics, so I probably would not have bought this myself. But again, it was a gift so I can’t complain.
Sure, I’d wear it on occasion just for something a little different
I really like it. classic inspiration with enough uniqueness to be noticed but not obnoxious. that is if the dial is an appropriate size….
It’s a regulator. since I don’t adjust clocks, I don’t need it. Minute hand isn’t the most important hand for me.
The look is good though, had it been a regular layout with 3 hands, a day of the week and date of the month sub-dial, I would consider it.
“If Kermit the Frog impregnated Voltron, this right here would be the darling little amphibibotic embryo”One of the best laughs I’ve had in a while. Thanks Joe. If nothing else its these tasty gems that keeps me coming back. “If Kermit the Frog impregnated Voltron, this right here would be the darling little amphibibotic embryo”
