Lands’ End / Lands’ End Canvas Spring Sale 2012

March 23, 2012 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Free Shipping No Minimum with code SWIMHQ1 and pin 2512

Free shipping at $50 code is also active: WARM & pin 1940.  Expires 3/27/2012  But again, SWIMHQ1 and 2512 gets you free shipping no minimum, so hopefully that one stays active.

So this is odd.  When Lands’ End Canvas launched their Spring sale yesterday, there were a whopping 21 items in the men’s sale section (and there was much rejoicing?).  Kinda paltry.  But if you head over to big brother Lands’ End’s website, they have a bunch more under a section called “Canvas Clearance.”  Seems like a similar strategy that L.L. Bean has used before.  If it doesn’t sell on the sub-brand’s website, shift it on over to the big site, and see if it moves?

Who knows.  But there’s different stock on the Lands’ End site when it comes to Canvas sale items, and there’s some solid items available from the plain ol’ Lands’ End brand.  No matter the location, here’s the best of the best:
.

Lands’ End Cashmere Watch Cap – $34.99 ($59.50)
100% Cashmere.

You probably won’t be wearing it for the next, oh, half to 3/4 of the year, but Cashmere honks will tell you that now’s the time to get your hands’ on cashmere if you’re on a budget.  And since this’ll be on your head, and some wool hats can get itchy, a soft cashmere hat could be a good upgrade.

L.E.C. Blackwatch Wool/Leather Belt – $27.97 ($79.50)
Merry March Christmas

A blackwatch plaid wool blazer in spring will look out of place.  A blackwatch plaid wool belt might be the perfect way to mix it up.  Now under $30, and… wait, they were selling this for eighty dollars?

L.E.C. Cotton Cashmere Sweater – $14.97 ($59.50)
Give camel a chance.

It’s only 5% cashmere, so don’t think you’ll be able to really tell a difference, but it’s far from some thick, spongey, bulky fit all cotton sweater.  Fit could be trimmer, but it’s a good layering piece.  Six color options available, with sizes spread out, but three of the six colors, like this camel, do have a bulk of the sizes left.  V doesn’t dip too low either.

LE Spread Collar No-Iron – $44.99 | L.E.C. “Not Quite Perfect” Gingham Poplin – $19.95
Let them wear checks?

Dress shirt on the left is from Lands’ End, comes in neck and sleeve sizes, and has a spread collar.  Casual shirt on the right is from Lands’ End Canvas, has some “Measuring/sizing faults; fit issues” and has a button down collar.  Yup, sizing faults.  “Some Shirts had minimal sizing faults. Maddening as these defects are, they’re also quite minor. If we felt otherwise, you wouldn’t find us offering these at any price.”  You’ve been warned.

L.E.C. Suede Montrose Alpine Boots – $39.97 ($138)
Three colors, plenty of sizes.

Wow.  A hundred off.  You won’t walk around the world in these, but if you want a light suede boot that’ll be super light on your wallet?  Hard to beat $40.

L.E.C. Nailhead Blazer – $24.97icon ($99.99)
Not this fitted in person. Needs some work.

It’s a little stiff.  Needs to be broken in, slept in, balled up, and thrown up against a wall a few times.  Runs a little long in the sleeves.  But the color/pattern is just different enough, and after your tailor goes to work on it, it might become a useful player to come off your closet’s bench.

L.E.C. Cream Stripe Supima V-Neck  – $39.99 ($60.00)
Jack & Meg unavailable for comment.

Yes you’ve seen this before.  But it’s worth repeating:  While some guys will be out in pink pants, lime green polos, and all sorts of bright colored accoutrements, if you’re just not that type and don’t want to look like a 3rd grader picked the color palate for your getup… stand out quietly with white.  Or off -white.  You won’t blend in but unlike the dude in the canary sweater and purple shorts, you won’t risk looking silly either.  Until you drop your ketchup covered hotdog on this thing while at the ball game.

L.E.C. Refined Herringbone Slim Fit Wool Chinos – $38.97 ($130)
Probably going to be prickly in June.

Not going to be wearing these for awhile, but they’re 100% wool and started off at a whopping $130.  Now under $40 and ship free with the no minimum code.  A warning, these should fit slimmer than the “tailored fit” from Lands’ End.  And speaking of….

The wait till next’ season splurge:  Tailored Fit Flannel Trouser –  $99.99 ($149.50)
Hell of a pair of trousers. For Thanksgiving.

95% wool and 5% cashmere.  From the regular Lands’ End line in can’t miss Glen Plaid.  Awesome pants.  Hard to pull the trigger on when you know you’re just going to have to put them in storage until… what… November?  And yes, it’s not really a “wait till next season” splurge, but more of a “wait till the season after next” season splurge, since technically the next season is summer.

For her:  L.E.C. Women’s Surf Shack Bikini Top – $6.97 ($34.50)
Four color options. Stare until you can pick out all of them.

It appears they’re out of the matching bottoms.  So your wife or girlfriend is out of luck.  But who cares.  This was only an excuse to post the memorizing Cintia Dicker.  And somehow she gets more mesmerizing when set to Sandstorm:
.

Word is the Lands’ End / Lands’ End Canvas spring sale is set to end on Tuesday 3/27.  Possibly.

Free shipping on any Lands’ End purchase through April 6 with code SWIMHQ1 and pin 2512. The WARM code only works if you buy more than $50 of L.E.C. (not regular Lands’ End) merchandise.

Bought four of the Cotton Cashmere sweaters @ $16 last time they were on sale. Wearing them to work now that the weather is cooling down (in Southern Oz). They are fantastic – maybe a little short compared to my other sweaters (I’m 6′ 2″), but fit and feel very nice, and will be great under a jacket when it gets even cooler.

Also, really nice khaki chino blazer for $54 down from (a ridiculous) $180.

JJust got the nailhead blazer in the mail yesterday. Not impressed with the fit out of the box. Chest is good, but the shoulders are slightly tight, the sleeves billowy and long (with functional cuffs to add to the frustration), the waist is a little wide and it is far too long, IMO. Hangs down a good half-inch past the bottom of my butt.

Contemplating whether I’d be happy with it when tailored, or if it’s even worth it..

  12. Andrew says

    March 23, 2012 at 8:09 AM

I bought the collegiate orange chambray and was pretty disappointed. First off, the buttons are huge – much bigger than they appear in the picture. Also, the shirt just feels kind of cheaply made in general. I’d probably go for a nicer option from J. Crew, because I can’t really see myself wearing the L.E.C. one much.

  13. Mathis Vila Kennington says

    March 23, 2012 at 8:14 AM

Picked up the Supima sweater and went with a chambray blazer given the bad reviews on the nailhead.  Maybe it will be different, maybe not.

  14. antonio moore says

    March 23, 2012 at 8:19 AM

Ok I would buy that nailhead blazer in a heartbeat. $24 bucks plus $15 for my tailor. Still a good price for a nice spring blazer.

I like how, when they move items to the clearance section or to the mainline site, that all the product reviews magically disappear. I know over half these items weren’t selling because of issues brought up in the reviews, such as the cheap eyelets on the Crosby Moc Toe Boot.

  20. Ryan N. says

    March 23, 2012 at 8:48 AM

What all would that $15 cover? Doesn’t seem like enough, IMO.

  21. poolboss says

    http://reviews.landsend.com/2019/212396/mens-cotton-cashmere-v-neck-sweater-reviews/reviews.htm?sort=helpfulness

Deciding whether or not to pull the trigger on it. I always get size small in their shirts. 6’0″ 160lbs.

Anyone have any comments on the sweater’s length?

  25. the passenger says

    March 23, 2012 at 9:43 AM

I’ve had one for over a year (red, seems to be gone now). The sleeves are too long, which has been a problem for me with all the LEC shirts (I wear a 34 sleeve in dress shirts so it’s not even like I have short arms), but otherwise I like it. I don’t care for the extended “throat latch” thing that J. Crew still has on its chambray shirts, which is one reason I chose the LEC shirt. I fall between L and XL, sleeves were a bit more reasonable on the L but it was just a little too tight across the chest and stomach, there was a bit of button pull which I find more embarrassing than too-long sleeves. I also like the pencil slot, not that I use it for pencils but it makes the rest of the pocket less “floppy” when using for other things.

For comparison, I have some L.L. Bean Signature shirts and the L is a good fit for me overall—still slim in the chest but just enough more room so there is less or no button pull, and the sleeves are actually the right length for my arms.

As for the other commenter’s feelings about the buttons, I don’t think they are too large. They are larger than typical buttons on a dress shirt, but since this is a “work” shirt I think that’s okay. But these things are very subjective, as I’m sure you know. For a clearance price of $15 it’s probably worth picking one up.

What size did you order and what neck/sleeve shirt size are you, if you don’t mind me asking?

  27. KurtMac says

    March 23, 2012 at 10:10 AM

I don’t have that particular sweater, but have gotten a few V-neck wool-blend sweaters from LEC in the past. I’m 6’2″ ~160lbs and got the Medium size, the arm and torso length are just barely long enough, and they fit well in the shoulders. My complaint is with the chest size, which is far looser fitting and oddly cut. When I hold my arms out it looks like I’m wearing a skydiver wing suit. Not a problem if you’re planning on layering under a blazer or something, but otherwise I’ve stopped buying LEC tops and sweaters for this reason.

  28. BKA says

…and here are the reviews of the Nailhead Blazer that don’t show up on the sale-price link (http://reviews.landsend.com/2019/226874/mens-nailhead-oxford-blazer-reviews/reviews.htm), similar experiences to Ryan N.’s it seems…though I like the one guy’s suggestion to solve the fit/sleeve length problem with a hot water/high heat dryer, given that worst-case scenario it’s a $25 mistake…

5’10” 165-170 and the length of the sweater seemed just right for me.  Didn’t wash/dry it though, just tested it.  Chest did seem to be a little roomy, but nothing too bad on my end.

  31. VeloTime says

Could anyone make a comparison on how the fit of these are compared to the J Crew chambray shirts?
Smalls from J Crew are perfect for me but I wear a Med in shirts from most other brands.

This is apropos of nothing, but since Dappered Threads is down at the moment I figured I’d post here. If you’re looking for a basic navy blazer, Macy’s has got some 100% wool Michael Kors blazers for $85 in-store (after a stacking discount + coupon) and $99 online. The fit in the picture looks pretty wonky but it’s slim and relatively soft-shouldered in reality. Pewter-colored buttons instead of traditional brass. It’s a solid price for an item that should be a staple in most men’s wardrobes.

I’m a 15-32, and ordered a small. Fits well on my 35.5″ chest, but can’t help feeling the shoulders are slightly tight.

Of course, might just need to be broken in a bit as Joe suggested..

  35. BKA says

    March 23, 2012 at 8:40 PM

Thanks for the info, Ryan, I appreciate it.  I took the gamble and ordered it in a small (I wear a 14.5×32)…I worry about the un-tailorable sleeve length issue you mention, but at $25, it’s not much of a gamble anyhow.

Those herringbone wool chinos are too good to leave, and I had to add a couple of other pairs of trousers and socks to justify the $28 freight on an order under $100 to Oz – Almost made it through the month without buying 😉

I didn’t get turned onto LE until noticing GQ and TheStyleBlogger featuring their down vests. Why pay $100+ when the LE alternative can be had at $25/each? Really loving this sale, may pull the trigger on a few pieces.

FWIW, there’s a decent amount of space between the last button and the end of the sleeve.. too much, IMO. Almost like they expect you to get it tailored. There’s a good 1.25-1.5″ there on mine.

I picked up that blackwatch belt a month or so ago when it was $49 and have never received so many compliments on an article of clothing before.

$15 is a standard price for altering the sleeves.

I bought them too. Old Navy had a pair of wool pants that looked like a sack of potatoes. These actually have shape and are 100% wool for a great price.

Of course – you’ll get to use these now as you enter winter! lol

how’s the sizing of LEC clothes?  I’ve never purchased anything from them, but am looking at a few button down shirts.  For reference, I’m usually a medium (though sometimes a small, depending on the shirt) from Banana Republic.

  43. VeloTime says

    April 3, 2012 at 3:49 PM

I just got a couple of the chambry/workshirts and a buffalo plaid shirt. Sizing seems to be on pare with J Crew if that helps. I wear a Small in the J Crew stuff, Med in thier slim fit. Smalls from Lands End Canvas were correct for me. There was some variations in sizing though. I’m 5’11 170lbs, 38 suit.
The two workshirts were pretty close but the plaid shirt was a bit looser. Also, plaid shirt had some stiching issues on one of the chest pockets. Prob just have the tailor run a quick fix on it. For the $14 price I don’t think it’s worth the trouble to send back and mess around with a return…
