Red Wing for J. Crew Round Toe Boots – $138 ($240) | Beckman moc-toe – $186 ($320)
*Use code OURTREAT for this extra 40% off price. The graphics do tend to say that it’s good on “final” sale items, but it still works here, even though they aren’t labeled as final sale. Code expires 1/25/12. Credit Geoff with the style tip.
Red Wing is a name that deservedly carries with it a ton of weight. Hell, they’re worshiped by some. And J. Crew excels at these types of collaborations/partnerships which they’ve labeled as their “in good company” offerings.
But not everyone can lace up a pair of Red Wings without feeling like they should be singing this:
.
………………………..
For the Round Toe Boots: Crazy cheap for Red Wings which are made in the USA. Ugly, but a good ugly to some. Like a bulldog. Goodyear welt construction, dark brown tanned suede, and a couple sets of laces. But would you wear them? And what about the price?
For the Beckman moc-toe: Jeebus. Look at em’. These are like a well endowed woman showing a devastating amount of cleavage. They are big and they are hard to ignore. They’ll walk into the room before you do. Wear them with jeans and a plain sweater and everyone will keep looking at your feet. Under $200. But would you wear them? And are they still out of your price range?
It’s worth mentioning that the code OURTREAT takes the extra 40% off, and while the graphics on J. Crew’s website says it’s good on “final sale” items, the fine print reads: “40% off discount applies to J.Crew sale and Factory sale online items only. “ So for now, it looks like they can be sent back if they don’t fit since they’re not labeled in the usual red text as final sale.
Would you wear one but not the other? Both? Neither? Leave it all in the comments section below…
I ordered the Beckman Mocs a few days ago, should be getting them soon. This will be my third pair of Red Wings…amazing boots. I couldn’t pass up the price. All of their boots are extremely comfortable and built to last!
I wore Red Wing Loggers for years. These are a man’s set of boots for sure. Simply the best fitting/lasting boots on Earth.
Not sure about these though.
I could use a pair of heavier boots with the weather we’re getting these days (it’s a bit slushy), but I need a smaller size.
By the way, this is the last day to use the code OURTREAT. I was planning on buying two shirts from J.Crew
Factory. Will it get any better or is this my last chance? It would make me feel better if I could wait until Thursday.
Get these instead — LL Bean Signature Work Boots – on sale for $99. I bought some a month ago — great boot for the money.

The Beckmans are just too much boot for me. I looked like a junior lumberjack. Had to send them back.
There is no question here… Red Wings are awesome.
While that is nice looking and cheap, it is imported. Doesn’t say where. Red Wings are made in the USA and literally made to last your entire life. They offer recrafting services on their boots as well. Admittedly, these things matter to some more than others.
Yea, that front detail is way too flashy more me. If they had the one with out the detail or the gentleman’s traveller’s I would be first in line.
A new year, and I have to be more selective
I ordered the Beckmans as part of this sale. I have wanted a pair of Red Wings for years. I couldn’t pass up the deal. These are not too dissimilar to the one’s my grandfather wore. I do enough manual labor on the weekends to need a pair of boots. These will replace an old pair of Salomon hiking boots that I had been using. Plus the Red Wings will be fine for wearing to the local watering hole at the end of the day.
Also, I thoroughly enjoyed the Monty Python. Hadn’t seen that sketch in years.
I would spend a little bit more for the Frye Dakota laceups, in cognac.
Just bought the Beckmans…can always return them to the JCrew store down the road if they dont work.
The promo code is not working. for the brown Beckmans.
I bought a pair of Chippewa 6″ Classic Lace-up Boots just after Christmas and I can’t recommend them enough. They are Goodyear welted, have Vibram soles, made in the US, and at $130-140, are a lot more reasonably priced than the similar Red Wing Iron Rangers. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/theantiduck/chips2-1.jpg
I think I would go for the Beckmans over the round toes. Based on style and color. They would look pretty slick with my super dark 505s.
Joe- this is totally unrelated, but have you done a post on shopping at at Target? Between the Merona button-down, the pocket squares, and the NATO straps, it seems like a place where I could stock up on certain staple clothing items whenever I’m planning to buy random household good; but every time I head there I just get intimidated and head straight to the toasters/coffee mugs/trampolines/whatever else I specifically went there for, then leave asap.
I thought these were final sales? I want the Beckmans, but Im pretty sure I cant return them since it says final sale, which makes me reluctant to buy them.
Fryes are nice but they are impOrted too. Red wings are superior in quality and look better in my opinion and are made here in the US
I recommend you search the site – he has done numerous posts on finds/reviews/opinions regarding Target
ordered the beckman and the 2904 (not featured here, but definitely worth a look…might be even more boot than the other two, though remember that most will be covered by jeans) the other day; they’re here tomorrow. we’ll see…there are nits I have with both of them, but they may be overcome with an in-person look.
…there is jcrew SALE and jcrew FINAL SALE. discount applies to
both, in this case, but FINAL SALE are not returnable. neither of the
boots I ordered were final sale (beckman and 2904). click around and you’ll see the text
on the product page as to whether the items are final sale…or put them
in your cart and you’ll see it.
When it comes to boots, I am really a Doc Martens fan at heart. Nothing beats a nice pair of originals – so long as they’re made in England.
worked on both of them for me, in my cart, just now?
Given that I’ve specifically named several items that Joe has discussed in the past, does it not stand to reason that I’m familiar with at least some of his numerous posts referencing Target?
My suggestion was a comprehensive Target staple-items post that one can reference if they are planning to make a trip there for whatever reason. Throwing “Target” or “Target Merona” into the search box doesn’t exactly offer a concise set of results. I think it would be helpful.
I want to agree with you Colin, but like Jr just above you, the Beckmans are a LOT of boot. They’ll be overwhelming for some. But damn. The price.
+1
I got the exact same pair (but with cap toes) a few years back. They look really good. Not that I have anything against Red Wing, they make beautiful boots.
Those Beckman’s are a beautiful boot
I’d totally wear them, and I’m pretty sure I could pull it off. My vote is on the Beckmans. I was actually eyeing them yesterday. Too bad I’ve blown my clothes budget for the next couple months (and I’ve promised myself that my next shoe purchase would be a pair of cap toe balmorals).
Yeah… not knockin’ Red Wing (Minnesota pride woo!), I just think the price point on the Chips makes them a little more accessible. L.L. Bean sells the cap-toe version under their Katahdin line. They’re a bit more expensive than the standard ones. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/49464?feat=592-GN1&attrValue_0=Brown
Isn’t everything from LL Bean guaranteed for life?
Those are fucking fantastic!
Bought the Beckmans in the last 30% off sale and felt that they were a great deal at $224–$186 is an absolute steal. They’re a heftier boot, but look great with jean, and are a little dressier w/ the mini-lug rubber sole. One thing to bear in mind is that the color is closer to a warm brown than the chestnut they show in the pictures. This is a much better representation of the true color.

Laughing at the fact that the auction price has exceeded the J.Crew sale price…
Those beckmans and Red Wing in general are indeed outstanding. That price is also outstanding, but still a little too much for me personally unless I would be wearing them all the time. Being that I live in Southern California, they aren’t that necessary, despite being very stylish.
I was in the market for my first pair of boots and ended up with the gray Timberland Earthkeepers that Dappered highlighted during the Nordstrom sale. Great boots and I really like the unique gray color, for me the $55 price was unbeatable though.
Those look ok, but they are very tall. And if you wear a 13, like I do, those get big fast. The lower ankle of the red wings sit perfectly between rolling your ankle and ankle doenst bend. But thanks for the link. Nice to have multiple options
I’d easily wear either and both pair. Both are fantastic boots. The price is good on them, but a solid pair of boots is an investment. If the red wings were under $100 I dont think I could pass them up. $150 for the Beckman’s
I really wish the Beckmans had a plain toe instead of the moc toe. They might actually work with me, because I have broad shoulders, but long lean legs so the bulkiness at the feet might balance me out but I just really like the plain toe look better.
Also wish the color was a true chestnut rather than the warm brown (thanks for pointing that out Weston). I might have to go for the Frye Arkansas in Cognac for what I’m looking for, despite their being made in Mexico.
What do you mean by “a lot of boot”?
The Lands End Canvas book have moc-toe and are under 100, been wearing them for a while. Lot darker (and now limited sizes after i got the link then the Redwings but if your in the market
http://bit.ly/xKKKT0
I got the Beckmans, it looks like it could possible be a weird orange color but hoping it is more brown
Fyi, sounded like you were suggesting those items to Joe as well. I do think the comprehensive Target staple idea is good.
I was checking the Beckmans out last night also, but didn’t pull the trigger because I was thinking, hey, I’m an idiot. Not only do I already have too many shoes, I have more than enough in the way of boots as well — I already have 3, two of which are RWs, one of which are the plain toe black cherry Beckmans.
But today, I said f*ck it and bought ’em.
The Beckmans arrived yesterday, and it is like the heavens opened up and a choir of angels began singing Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
I picked up the Timberland’s for $55 too. Great boots for that price. Can’t beat it!
I bought my first beckman for 230 last fall, and purchased my 2nd pair today for 140. Why do I need two of the same pair? I still haven’t figured that out but I’m so happy I’ve got two of these bad boys!
