J. Crew Aldridge Fit Colburn Tweed sportcoat – $104.99 w/ MUSTHAVE ($278)
The code MUSTHAVE is good for an additional 30% off sale items. Expires 11:59pm ET tonight.
Think of a word that’s associated with J. Crew sportcoats, and you’re likely to think of “Ludlow.” (Or “expensive” but hang with me here.) Ludlow is the term for J. Crew’s closer, more modern fit. Slim lapels, a nice contour at the waist, and plenty of guys can get away without any tailoring in one.
This ain’t a ludlow.
It’s an Aldridge. Which is their more traditional, roomier fit, so despite the pictures online, it might need tailoring upon arrival depending on your body type. And that means more money. But the fabric is English Wool from the Abraham Moon Mill, there’s pick stitching on the still pretty slim looking lapels, and there’s a good amount of sizes left (update: They’re almost sold out… looks like people are jumping on it.) There is just one other tiny issue…
It’s final sale.
.
That means once you buy it, it’s yours. No returns. And that’s a big risk. Now while this one certainly has a lot going for it, there’s a few potential dealbreakers thrown in there too. So where do you come down on this? Cast your vote below, and leave any explanation in the comments…

At this price, definitely worth the risk because I seem to be a good fit for most 44L. Only trouble is, J.Crew won’t ship to Australia…:-(
Oh so THIS they have in 36? boo
It’d might be worth the risk if I could find an Aldridge fit to try in store first… size varies between brands too much to buy something online final sale without knowing if itll fit or not.
And they have my size ? Oh the decision !
I see the Ludlow chino blazer is under $100 with the code. All sizes and a few colors. Could be worth it to stash for spring.
I bought a heritage tweed sportcoat in the Ludlow fit as soon as it hit the final sale and a big thing that helped me get over the final sale jitters is to GET MEASURED PROPERLY then call or chat with customer service and ask for the exact dimensions and measurements on the jacket. Once you have those it’s just a matter of knowing if it’s worth having to tailor or it may be a perfect fit. That Ludlow fit is pretty dead on for a skinny man like myself.
I get too nervous buying anything off the internet that’s final sale. I’m 6’4, with monkey arms. Sometimes a 46L is perfect. Sometimes, it’s way off. a hundred bucks is a lot of margaritas at my local tequila shop…
I would say NOTHING: J Crew is one of the mos condescending brands, insulting the basic intelligence of the customer at every turn. Their products are crap, their markup is huge, justified by an extremely insulting marketing approach (i.e. we know that you want nice things but can’t afford them, so here’s some run of the mill crap, jazzed up with an aspirational, cool vibe, and you’re good to go). Please. Of course, most other brands do the same, but most also have the good sense to be a tad more subtle about it.
I currently wear a medium in their ludlow blazers, but am unsure if I would be more likely to wear a 38 or 40 regular in their ludlow sportcoats. I’m pretty sure I measure right at a 38″ chest. The small blazers are a little too snug for me. I’m 5’10” 165ish lbs
Any suggestions from anyone with experience with their sportcoats.
Those lapels look REALLY slim. Not my style.
Might be pulling the trigger on this deal. I have too much chest and shoulder to wear the trendy modern fit/skinny stuff. So my issue asn’t so much the fit as the color/texture. At this price I’ll take the risk.
I have a 36R Ludlow yorkshire tweed blazer from j crew and i bought it 2 weeks ago for $186. Best purchase i ever made as it is the best blazer i own.
Out of 42R so it is a dead conversation for me, but after trying this on in the store you would have to get it cut no matter what due to some extra room on the back shoulders. Sorry but this is fools gold.
150-160 bucks (after tailoring costs) isn’t a bad deal for a blazer.
Despite what Kaboom says, I own the Ludlow version of this blazer and it’s incredible. It fits perfect and the quality is great. In fact, it’s the best blazer I own. I tend to buy all my suiting from J Crew because it fits me well. I am 5’9″ 155lbs and wear a 36R in their Ludlow fit. The only tailoring I ever need is to bring the sleaves up slightly. I’ve tried on some Aldridge jackets and they are slightly more boxier ( I hope that makes grammatical sense). However, I did not feel that the Aldridge would need tailoring other than the sleeves. I go with the Ludlows because they fit perfectly, while the Aldridges fit well. I hope this helps.
Beautiful jacket IMO. I’d pay up to $150, assuming it fits well and only minimal alterations are needed.
Exactly what I do.
Holy crap, that dramatic chipmunk is awesome…and I guess the sportcoat seems okay.
I can’t possibly disagree more.
I gotta say, I don’t think sizing up to the less-modern fit would cut it at any price. At least, I doubt it would for me. The Ludlow fit is PERFECT. I wore my Ludlow corduroy blazer to work today, and it fits like a glove, and that just comes in “Medium.”
Pay a little more, and you can get this: http://www.jcrew.com/browse/single_product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441797168&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032653&nav_type=PRMNAV&bmUID=1326914927971
Code MUSTHAVE brings it down 30% off the sale price, to $170 shipped. For what I am damn sure would be an impeccable sportcoat. If I hadn’t JUST bought this: http://canvas.landsend.com/pp/WoolHerringboneSportcoat~226939_-1.html , I’d be jumping all over the J. Crew blazer.
Oh, and the J Crew blazer I just posted is available in a LOT more sizes!
I need to stop staring at this friggin’ sportcoat, or I’m gonna buy it anyway.
The difference between Ludlow and Aldridge in six words. Go.
Uniqlo has great blazers on sale for $79 down from $199. AND you can return them.
I don’t know much about J Crew as I don’t shop there but for them to be condescending is really odd. As you say, their products aren’t exactly “high-end” (not sure if they are crap though a la Kenneth Cole Reaction). We’re not talking about Canali, Zegna, Oxxford or Brioni here. Don’t get me wrong, J Crew does have some well designed stuff but it is by no means upscale and they are in no position to be dishing out attitude.
I own the Ludlow version. I’m wearing it right now as a matter of fact. I’m not terribly fond of the narrower lapels, but the fabric and construction are great and I get many compliments on the fit and texture. I got a similar deal during the Christmas sales. I was unable to try on the Aldridge since they rarely carry that fit in the store near me. In my experience the J. Crew runs short. I had to get a 42L for the appropriate sleeve length.
quarter inch more in the lapels.
What Ian said. Longer jacket, too.
Did you work a J Crew at one time?
Is the button stance too high, or is it just the impression those low rider pants impart?
I find the sizing for the J Crew Ludlow suit jackets to be different from their tweed blazers. The Ludlow 42L suit jacket fits me perfectly, but the tweed 42L in Ludlow fit is just way too big. 40L fits me with a little of tightness in the shoulder causing the fabric to buckle underneath the shoulder pad, but still better than the 42L. I verified this on several different tweeds and ultimately I passed up on them, even though the fabric is nice. I haven’t tried the Aldridge but just something to keep in mind regarding size.
I’m sure the jacket would fit me like a sack (and it’s not in my size anyway), but I must say I really like the styling on the model. Not the shirt collar poking out over the jacket, of course, but the general color combo, especially the tie and the pants. It’s a little more visually interesting than your standard light shirt/dark tie/khaki chinos look.
They have my size…38s…tempting. Maybe I’ll stop by the brick and mortar after work and take a looksee
Final Sale items now 40% off with code OURTREAT.. only 46S left, though. Makes it $79!
*edit: $89.
