Rugby Tartan Newbury Jacket – $169.99 ($398)
It started off as expensive as a basic SuitSupply suit. Then it dropped down to the high $200s. Now it’s at $170, and all the sizes are still available. That’s more than $200 off retail. And Rugby isn’t afraid to keep their goods at full retail for a good long while.
Maybe it’s because the pattern is pretty loud. Maybe it’s because the styling on the model is so over the top that most guys can’t see this thing existing on it’s own. Y’know, without a bow tie, club collar shirt, and preppy as all hell sweater. Or maybe it’s because it’s thrown in the “outerwear” category as opposed to the “Suiting & Sport Coats” section (sure looks like a sport coat to me.)
Maybe it’s a combination of all three.
100% wool, ships free, all sizes available.
Regardless, it’s a once was $400 3-button jacket, in a distinctive as all hell pattern, now down to $170. And that’s right in the blazer wheelhouse for those of us who don’t stray that far from Banana Republic prices.
But what would you pay? Is it just not your style at all? Would you wait for maybe another extra 25% off code to come along? Cast your vote below, and leave any reasoning in the comments.

It looks like something a kid would wear to a private school.
Or maybe option 4: They scared away their straight market by hiking the model’s pants around his bulge to an uncomfortable-to-view degree. I mean seriously now…. What poor, horrified intern got that tucking job?
$70 tops. It’s an ok looking blazer, but that pattern, along with being pretty loud, is also seasonal.
Is it a 3/2 roll? If so, I’d buy it now if I had that kinda money to throw around.
Wish it was the $70 price listed at the beginning. I prob wouldn’t pass it up for that cheap
I’ll buy it and wear it when I find it in a thrift store next year 🙂
looks great but I can never picture myself wearing it. over the top preppy, in my opinion
I’d pay half that. You’re only gonna wear it once or twice a year.
$70 price is probably a typo. Probably meant to say $170.
Under $100, yes. Not at what it’s going for right now. And the model (or whoever styled the shot) isn’t doing that jacket any favors, because it seems like a huge mishmash of spoiled-rich-kid-prep. Was the bow tie and cricket sweater with ridiculous crest logo necessary? Tone it down and anyone call pull it off.
I would never wear that.
A typo that made me sad. I would probably have bought it at that price….
I’d wear it, definitely. But not for anywhere north of $100… and preferably for south of $50.
I said it before when this jacket showed up, but those white stripes really kill the jacket. It would look killer with just the blue, green, and subtler red stripes. Black Watch-esque.
I’d try it, but the Small/Medium/Large sizing puts me off. Already knowing RRL sizing leans a little on the short side, this tall dude will have to pass at any price.
Just for future reference, RRL is an entirely different line then Rugby Ralph Lauren. RRL is a high end workwear line that Ralph Lauren put out a few years ago that has become highly successful, whereas Rugby is their more youthful, prep look. RRL stuff generally runs in the 500$+ range, even for basic items.
Maybe I’m alone in this, but I don’t think it’s all that loud if you’re wearing it as a fall/early spring piece of outerwear. With jeans or khakis and dark chukkas, it wouldn’t seem as outre (or ridiculous). That said, Rugby is going to be short and tight on me, so “no” in this case.
How does this thing fit? Is it going to need a lot of tailoring? That would certainly help in making a decision.
I bought the full suit (including pants) when I called the DC store. Including shipping, I got it for $250. The only thing that needed tailoring were the pants, I had them cuffed and everything fits perfectly. Looks amazing with a knit tie and fits to a tee.
I like it, but I’m 5’8″ and loudish patterns on someone like me looks clownish…
I like it but I’d like it more if it were a 2 button. Also I feel like anytime I’d want to wear it would be a time I’d rather wear my J. Crew Blackwatch.
Good point.
awful styling of the model aside, I love it, i would buy it at around $170 if they had my size and it were two button.
For a second I thought I could pull this off. Then I woke up. Seems cool but no way I could pull it off, personally.
You’re not alone. I don’t think it’s all that loud either. The colors are dark and there aren’t too many stripes. I’d wear it with the right pants, shirt and sweater.
My thoughts exactly.
I like it. I actually bought one while thrifting. Ralph Lauren is the best for classic styling. I would spend the full price for it.
