Urban Outfitters Stapleford Port Weekender Bag – $79.00
Someone might label you a carpetbagger, but then again you’d have to have had carpet made of Lumberjacks. (The finest of all carpets in the world no doubt.)
It’s a traditional doctor style, with a reinforced bottom and those over the top buckles. Even though it’s a “plaid flannel” exterior, it doesn’t seem to be natural. Polyester and with faux leather polyurethane trim. But that’s why it’s under $80 (and ships free.)
At 20″ wide it has almost 2,000 cubic inches of space, so it’s not miniscule. But would you carry it? Or is it a little too Al Borland meets Grandma Ma’s over-sized purse?

Meanwhile, if you want the plaid in a more traditional duffel style, Ralph Lauren’s “Denim & Supply” line has one on sale for just under $100. About the same space inside, wool/poly/acrylic blend.
No because I am too boring, but I think someone could work with it. Just don’t wear the matching shirt.
I attempted to be William Wallace a couple Halloweens ago and I’m not even a little bit Scottish, so ya, I’d rock that in a heartbeat.
What is with men and murses? And where are men going over the weekend where they need one of these?
I pack my gear in Cabela’s duffels all da,y fellas.
I would for sure if it were wool flannel and leather. I’m tough on bags though, so I’m not sure how long the polyurethane would hold up.
Murse…oh, I get it. But does this apply to only bags? Should I also be referring to my shirt as a “man-blouse” and my watch as a “man-bracelet?” I mean, because I didn’t get them at Cabela’s.
I totally would as a duffel. As is, it does remind me of gma’s big ass purse.
That doctor bag is classic Americana. Would have no problem carrying that around.
what?
Okay fellas…
I agree with Johdus. Would I prefer wool and leather? Of course. But for $80 it seems pretty solid. Like the style, love the over the top straps.Still, my favorite bag you’ve ever put up on the site is this Rugby bowling bag. Pricey, but so slick.
Patagonia mlc is the way to go Not wearing a skirt or carrying bagpipes either
If your weekend trip goes awry and the state trooper or tow truck driver has to give you a ride, the look on his (or her) face will be priceless when you try to explain to him that it’s a “weekender!” and not a “purse”. Good luck.
Aw Joe, that could have been fun to watch!
Definitely prefer the duffel to the size/shape/details of the weekender bag. Then again, I stay conservative with accessories.
Well I would, because I’m a lumberjack and I’m okay. I sleep all night and I work all day.
I might, but i am not a huge fan of the red. does it come in other colors?
This one I’d pass on. It looks good, but then you’re talking about having to match your bag to your outfit, as this would look terrible with something you’d wear and great with another. That’s trying to hard.
Right. And once you start down that road, you’re on your way to dandytown.
It’s not bad — Tom Wolfe lives there — but not for me.
We came close to losing the classiness. Nice save, Joe.
Agree on all fronts Matt Court. When I saw that Rugby bag, I decided I needed a weekend bag, even though I am still not sure I need a weekend bag…maybe a bowling ball. Either way, I’d use the UO bag for $80.
I was not being facetious when I asked where men were going with these man-purses. I seriously have no idea where a guy would use one of these. They look too small to pack for a weekend.
Let it be known, men. JRok does indeed aid in others’ preferment, even if he simply doesn’t get it.
Ha…but it would go great with one of these…
I would. Very nice looking bag.
A great looking bag, great design – much better than the regular boring duffels. Funny how many people here substitute conservative for boring. Not sure about it’s built though. The low price does make me wonder.
I picked up the Woolrich John Rich Bros bag from last year. It was part of their 180th Anniversary collection, where they only made 180 of each piece. They did a traditional Woolrich plaid (black and red) with brown leather and a little suede accents. Love the bag and I use it during the Winter months. I waited a few months to get them, but pounced on one at Gilte and then at Barney’s. Got two of them for more than half off and will have them forever.
This year the bag of the Winter season was undoubtedly the Pendleton Portland Collection bags. Grabbed two of those at 75% off. Leather wasn’t as nice as I would have expected for a $400 bag, but it looks great and it’s a quite big. Great overnight bag that’s just bigger than your traditional duffle.
