The Eliminator – Five from Sierra Trading Post
You can get more than outdoor gear at Sierra Trading Post. A lot more. And they’re proving that they’re a well kept secret right here. These five items are all competing to survive. Each day we’ll eliminate an item until only one remains. Vote for the item that you’d LEAST like to own at the bottom of the page. The item with the most votes gets ejected at the end of the day. The item that remains at the end of this battle royal will be won by one of you.

ELIMINATED: Sebago Fairhaven Boots – $70.20
($135)
From a well loved brand with weekend good looks to spare. Moc toe with contrast stitching, a contrast sole, and equipped with a wet traction outsole. Sebago knows their way around docks as well as city side walks. Rugged but not so rugged that it looks like you just got back from a backpacking trip. Use code ALSNOW1 to get this price.
John Varvatos Star USA Subtle Plaid Sport Coat – $223.97
($495)
The subtle and shadow plaid thing ain’t going away, and for good reason. While everyone else is in boxy fit boring solids, it’s good to have not just well fitting jackets, but something with a bit of depth and character in your arsenal. Varvatos is one of the best at combining tradition with modern looks. A 60% wool / 38% poly / 2% lycra blend. Use code ALNOV1 to take 30% off orders of $150 and above and to get this price.
Swiss Military Hanowa Chrono Pro – $181.97
($525)
It is a quartz, but made in Switzerland and looks incredible thanks to a white face, contrasting black sub-dials and black outer tach ring. One of those watches that you’ll wear casually plenty, but can also use to dress down a suit and tie thanks to the sport influence. 41mm in diameter means it’s right in that not tiny but not gigantic wheelhouse. Use code ALNOV1 to take 30% off orders of $150 and above and to get this price.
Marc New York Boston Lambskin Motocross Jacket – $237.97
($595)
A lot of leather jackets take a turn for the worse once they add too many zippers, hardware, epaulets, etc… This isn’t one of those. Just one review on STP but it’s pretty glowing. Lambskin and retails for almost $600. Use code ALNOV1 to take 30% off orders of $150 and above and to get this price.
ELIMINATED: Barrington Leather Burke & Willis 15″ Briefcase – $279.97
($700)
Seven hundred bucks retail, marked down to $400, and according to a five star review made from “harness leather.” Contrast stitching throughout and a “low-luster” patina so you wont blind anyone on your way into work. Has a cleaned up but still sort of rugged look to it. Not some stiff hard edged attache by any means. Use code ALNOV1 to take 30% off orders of $150 and above and to get this price.

Here comes the tough part. Pick the item that you’d LEAST like to win and vote below to have it eliminated. One item gets cut every day. The item that’s left at the end of the week will be up for grabs and you’ll be able to enter to win on Friday. Make your case for what needs to go and/or what should stay in the comments. Voting closes at 11:59pm ET.
Day 3: Which Sierra Trading Post item should be ELIMINATED?
- The Varvatos Sport Coat (35%, 302 Votes)
- The Swiss Military Hanowa Watch (25%, 217 Votes)
- The Marc New York Leather Jacket (40%, 349 Votes)
Total Voters: 867

NOTE: If a size specific item (the boots, sport coat, or lambskin leather jacket) makes it to the end, the winner will be given the option of a Sierra Trading Post gift card equal to the STP price of the item if their size is not available.
I think the watch and the blazer are more essential than the leather jacket. I know people will disagree, but that’s my reason for axing the leather jacket.
To all of you who voted for the boots…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0ejnD3qIOo
Keep the Leather Jacket! (wait, does it come in tall sizes, 6’4 with monkey arms here).
The jacket looks better to me every day. Too many leathers look stiff and new, even when they’ve been in the closet for years, since they’re often worn only on lazy weekends by, well, middle aged guys like me. This one looks wearable with a tie, and supple enough to avoid the I’m not up for a yellow Porsche but I need something look. It should never be worn with a hat. I’m thinking how to make it work for me. It would be a challenge. How could I avoid the cliches? I like challenges.
ditch the blazer.
If you win, and the item isn’t in your size, you get a gift certificate for the value of the item.
I am going to keep voting for the watch. I don’t care if its not going to be eliminated. THE TWO PARTY SYSTEM IS A PLAGUE! NADER!!
Bye bye blazer!
I have to vote the leather jacket off the island. Leather jackets jumped the shark a few years ago. Heck, my sixty year old parents just bought leather jackets. My dad’s jacket is not too dissimilar from the one above.
I’m gonna have to disagree with you on this one. Leather jackets are timeless pieces that everyone wears. As evidenced by your parents. I’m voting the blazer on this one because I already have a suit in a similar pattern.
Voting against the jacket. Leather just isn’t my thing, unless it’s shoes or gloves of course.
leather has to go. come on sportscoat
I don’t know who “everyone” is but FWIW only one person I know wears a leather jacket. I would venture to say that most people DON’T own leather jackets these days.
Gotta vote off that coat again. The other two are way more versatile. (for me at least).
I didn’t like those boots at all, but you get a +1 for the link, broseph.
I agree with Richard Pacific. It’s not that the leather jacket isn’t nice, it is. I just have a freakishly long torso and look terrible in shorter style coats. Frankly, I’d be cool with either the watch or the sport coat but I could really use a non-work sport coat and that Varvatos really fits the bill.
Fair enough. My anecdotal experience obviously varies greatly from others’ experiences. I should have caveated my statement by saying that based on my observations for me the leather jacket has become oversatuated in groups of people that I would not consider sartorial.
Tough call. I still maintain that a leather biker jacket should be a leather biker jacket. Not a knock-off of the style with little of the functionality. Like steel-toed work boots: if you use them, wear them. If you “sport” them, knock it off.
Leather jackets = boring
Winner better have a motorcycle if that jacket wins
indeed, and voted as such
Agree with Ron up there. Also, as cool as leather jackets look, they’re really not as versatile as you’d think; can’t dress them up and the weight of it pretty much restricts to fall or spring weather … when it’s not a rainy day.
Unless you ride a motorcycle– at 70mph a heavy, collarless jacket is perfect.
Watch. Just not feeling it. Classic, but the sport coat and leather jacket are handier with CA weather.
I have to vote against the plaid jacket. I know they work on most people, just not me….
Tough, but it had to be the leather jacket. I just don’t rock much black.
The watch gets my vote yet again. If the sport coat survives, its next!
Leather Jacket has to go. The jacket is just to hard to work into a everyday wardrobe, and at the end of the day this jacket is just boring.
I agree. Most people look awful in leather jackets, or, god forbid, leather coats. I know this article is from Details but I found myself agreeing with it completely:
http://www.details.com/style-advice/rules-of-style/200611/men-shouldnt-wear-leather-jackets
Black jackets look thuggish and motorcycle jackets look odd if you didn’t just get off a bike.
Just sayin’
I definitely see your point though, for every one good leather jacket, there’s 30 awful ones
Gotta vote the jacket off the island this time. It’s not bad, but 40% synthetic isn’t for me.
By jacket, I meant sport coat….not the leather.
Out of shape people look awful in leather jackets AND everything else they wear.
I’m more of a Richie Cunningham than a Fonz. I’ve never been able to pull off the leather jacket.
The watch still has to go because of the quartz movement.
I really don’t get why people are so in love with that watch, its the least thing that you would want from this.
watch is played out
I feel the same way. And I think most people would get more use out of the watch and blazer than the jacket.
I agree, ditch the watch!
down with the watch
The watch definitely doesn’t come in my size, I will need a GC for sure :p
Moto jacket needs to go still. I’m not a big fan of the Sport coat either. Even with a Quartz movement, the watch is still the best piece.
I like how so many people are down on black leather jackets. Makes me all the more glad I just bought one. Of course I like mine a lot more than the one in this article…
axe the leather jacket!
I don’t know how that coat is still in. It looks stupid. Those shoes that were eliminated were actually pretty cool
get that jacket out of here!!
We have to get the quartz outta here!!! lol
I’m surprised the bag and boots went first. Those were my two favs haha. I don’t see the usability in the blazer being plaid. Not conservative enough for business dress, not distinct enough to be a character piece.
I think I’m pulling for the watch at this point.
I think the blazer is more important than the watch. Although nice, the watch doesn’t look special. The blazer makes more of a statement and will always be in fashion. The leather jacket looks like every other leather jacket. But then again, I’ve never been a fan of leather jackets.
Day 3: Varvatos Sport Coat. Hate to see it go, but I really love the Marc Motorcycle Jacket & Swiss Watch! 🙂
Tweeting @jsg1818
No, it’s the least thing that YOU would want from this. 🙂
Looking forward to winning the leather jacket! The JV jacket isn’t too bad either…
