Herschel Ravine Black & Tan Duffel – $55.00
We’re heading into a major travel season. You’ll need something to put your clothes in, and all the better if it’s something that’s as inexpensive as this.
Not too gymish to take on a vacation, and not too vacationy to take to the gym. Over 2,000 cubic inches of storage space, so it’s big enough to be a true weekender, and stacks up well against a standard sized duffel from Hilfiger.
The straps are a soft but fake leather-like material, and while the exterior isn’t Kevlar strong, it’s not paper thin either. Plenty sturdy enough to hold clothes, shoes, and maybe a bottle of wine or something else heavy. The interior is a red candy stripe, but getting to it shows the one drawback: The zipper is kind of flimsy.
Available in grey over at Maxton Men for $55 with free shipping (everything ships free there, and more on Maxton Men soon.) Same price at Need Supply Co. but you’ll get nailed with $6.95 shipping.
Want to support a company that makes their gear here in the U.S.? For a few bucks more, see the Primer Magazine approved Possibilities Bag from Beckel Canvas. A little smaller but made in Portland.
Is it washable? If I take it to the gym it’s gonna end up smelling like it.
How bad-ass are these wallets at Maxton?

Not to steal your upcoming Maxton thunder, but I just couldn’t help myself.
I have 3 bags from Beckel Canvas and love each one of them. They can also customize the bags to your liking, which they did with mine adding interior pockets, and outer zipper pockets. Very friendly people over there.
I own that Herschel bag. Because of its ‘taller’ shape (as opposed to the duffles that are perfect cylindrical) it actually holds a lot more than you’d think and the separate shoe compartment is nice to have. It’s the perfect size for an overnight/weekend road trip. The ‘hardware’ is plastic, the material is knid of thin (but lined), and the zipper is not heavy duty but it’s not a bad deal for the price.
Correction: mine is the Herchel Novel, not the Ravine. The Ravine does not have the shoe compartment.
How much could these realistically hold? I’m really interested but not sure if this could hold enough items for a short 2-3 day trip…
They need to change their picture on the second link you provided. It shows a Wachovia Card sticking out of the wallet…Wachovia was bought out by Wells Fargo plenty months ago.
Well in regards to your question @Cameron, This bag looks to be a little bigger than the Tommy Hilfiger duffle depict’d in Joe’s link. With that said, I own that exact Tommy Hilfiger bag, and it does plenty well for me on 4-5 day trips. This may give you an idea of how well it should do if it is a little bigger than TH’s.
Wait, you telling me I can’t keep my Pan Am frequent flyer card in my wallet anymore??!?
Totally depends on how heavy you pack. It’s bigger than my standard duffel that I use for quick getaways, but I also bring my smaller briefcase along. Also depends on what’s going on with the trip and how I’m getting there. It’s a good size though.
With the leather handles, I wouldn’t count on it.
I have the Hershel Novel which is a bit bigger and has the shoe compartment and I love it. Great carry on travel bag.
Faux leather. That being said, doubt it’s machine washable.
I checked out the Beckel Canvas site and I’m really impressed with what I’m seeing. My only issue is their lack of color.
The olive drab War Bag looks like exactly what I need. It is bigger than the bag that Joe linked to and it has a splash of color. Being in Portland, I’m gonna stop by the store on the way home from work!
@ Joe, @Tat, thanks for the responses about the size..I think you guys convinced me to pull the trigger on this one
STYLEGIRLFRIEND coupon code gets you 15% off the entire site and the bag is $44 after coupon.
Anyone have suggestions for a great dopp kit for cheap?
Hey Lance – any advice on how I might get them to customize my bags if I don’t live in Oregon?
…and what other customizations they offer?
They are able to do a lot of different things. I got an outer zipper pocket that runs along the whole side of my possibilities bad, and 3 interior pockets that run along the inside of the war bag. I also have the small necessary bag, all in olive drab.
Your best bet is to just call them. I live in Louisiana so everything was done over the phone.
Joe,
I’m looking to get the larger version of this bag (novel). Can you tell me what material the bag’s exterior is made of? I’m assuming the two bags (novel/ravine) are made out of the same material. Will it keep the contents dry in rainy weather? Thanks.
