Columbus Day Weekend Sales Breakdown

Sale Picks – Columbus Day Weekend 2011

Leif Ericson really gets the historical shaft.  Beating Columbus to North America by 500 years and Christopher gets the day?  The Norseman got hosed.  But it’s not like we parade in the streets here in America (Vespucci, you’re my boy.)  Most of us don’t even get Monday off.  Columbus Day in the 21st century basically means the stores have an excuse to mark some stuff down, and your mailbox will be empty that afternoon.

Picks below, and feel free to add more sales and other items in the comments section.  Make sure to check underneath the pics of the picks for any codes.
.

Macy’s:  INC Cord Blazer – $59.42 ($99) | Hilfiger Slim Windowpane Suit –$292.49 ($650)
Use the code SAVEMORE

The Deal:  Site Wide Selections + 10 – 15% Extra off with code SAVEMORE
Looks like prices have gone up on suits, but the windowpane on the Hilfiger Slim Fit is subtle and unique.  Ships free since it’s over $99.  If you can’t shell out the $100 for the J. Crew cord sportcoat, the INC is a reasonable alternative for cheap.  When it was released it was just available in navy, but it’s now available in grey and black too.

Express:  Wool Blend Peacoat – $149.50 ($278) | Merino V-Neck – $48.93 ($69.90)
Code 1746 and 1750 should both work.

The Deal:  Express: 30% off Outerwear and Sweaters plus tiered code 1746 0r 1750
Been awhile since Express got a mention.  This weekend Express is running one of their tiered sales.  $15 off $60, $30 off $120, and so on.  Remember when it used to be $15 off $30?  Anyway, with the 30% off and the code, you can get two of their Italian Merino V-necks for about $40 a piece before shipping.  Not incredible, but not terrible either.  The peacoat was pushing $300, and with the sale and code it drops to a very nice $150.  Half price ain’t half bad, and the length looks to be perfect.

Timberland: Malden Plaid Bomber – $103.60 ($148)
Use the code TBL1492

The Deal: Timberland: 30% off new arrivals with TBL1492
And that 30% off drops this high necked plaid bomber down to a more than reasonable $103.60.  Red if you want to stand out, grey if you want to stand out… less.  You have to use the code TBL1492.  Get it?  1492?  Har har.  (Thanks for the link Jackson.)

Lands’ End Canvas: Crosby Moc Toe Lace-up Boot – $89.99icon ($145)
Dirt + Shine = Good. MJ11 + 4423 = better.

The Deal: L.E.C. Fall sale plus $10 off over $50 with MJ11 and pin 4423
Just in case you missed these yesterday.  Black or brown.  Ships free too with the code.

GAP: Italian Moleskin Blazer – $94.40 ($118) | Birdseye Cardigan – $27.48 ($54.95)
Don't forget some kind of color.

The Deal:  Up to 50% off site wide sale.
No codes here but most of Gap.com seems to be on sale. Birdseye cardigan is a full half off.  The moleskin blazer gets dropped well under $100 but it was down to $82 just a few days ago.   Between the eyes of birds and the skin of moles, this is starting to sound awfully like a witches brew.

Ralph Laruen Wallinford Suede Ankle Boots – $111.75 ($150)
Use the code RLGIVE2011

The Deal: Ralph Lauren and Rugby – 25% off with code RLGIVE2011 / MATCH2011
They’ll take 25% off plus donate 10% of your purchase price to charity.  The suede boots above are $111.75 after the code, so $150 full retail.  That’s oddly affordable for Ralph Lauren (even though they’re from the lower “Polo line.”)  What’s even more odd is that they’re made in the United States.  Really?

What else?  At “press” time these were some of the top sales, but some good to great ones have probably been added since.  Leave your sale finds in the comments below.

When there is contrast Stiching like the Moc Toes…are you suppose to use a neutral polish? Using a black or brown polish would turn the contrast stiching their respective colors no?

Sweet, I had tried on that INC cord blazer this weekend. I know where I’m headed after work.

I think Timberland’s out of that plaid. Link redirects you to the main site, even if you go and select it from the ‘Outerwear’ category.

I bought the Express pea coat last year (the picture is the same as last year so I’m thinking it’s the same one). I like it a lot, but don’t expect it to be as warm as a military-issued pea coat. A sweater or suit underneath is usually fine, but a t-shirt is a bit rough on the east coast in January.

I believe the leather Ralph Lauren made in USA shoes are manufactured by Allen Edmonds. Who knows who does the suede.

That’s odd.  It was there yesterday, and I still have the grey one in my “cart.”  Says it’s in stock too.  Strange….

DAMN.  Didn’t catch the lack of sizes.  Saw these in-store the other day in plenty of sizes.  Didn’t see that online they were all but gone.

Jay is spot on. The express pea coat is nice. And fits fairly slim. Not as warm as the navy issue but looks real good dressed up. Be wary of the buttons, as with most pea coats, the come off and needto be re-sewed regularly. Maybe it could just be my peacoat b/c I have the one with the brass-like buttons from a year or two ago.

Wow.  $25 for a corduroy sport coat?  Can that coat really be worth a damn? Anyone know anything about the John Blair line?  I’ve had my eye on the J. Crew ones for a while.  This outfit seems to have good choice of sizes and colors (the brown and the grey).

I just clicked the link and it seems to be working for me…

  15. BenR says

I can recommend the J.Crew Factory cord blazer if that’s the one you’re looking at it. Picture here. I’m 5’9″, 145 lbs, wear a fitted 36R in jackets, and I’ve got the size small in the picture. It’s fairly casual, though, so if you’re looking for something a bit dressy it might not be for you.

I’d be skeptical of those John Blair ones. No idea on the quality, but the fit looks pretty bad (i.e., standard sack suit shape). They might seem a bargain at $20 but the tailoring it will take to make it look modern and fitted will run you a pretty penny.

It wasn’t working this morning, and now it is.  Double strange.

What are your opinions about the Gap Moleskin in brown? It appears warmer and more versatile for fall and winter. Maybe it’s just my aversion to black during the day.

What is your opinion of the jcrew merino wool sweaters vs the express ones shown here? The jcrew is 10 bucks cheaper per sweater. Any comments on quality and how they will layer over a shirt or under a jacket?

Jcrew merino sweater or express that’s 10 bucks more? Any thoughts on quality and will layer over a shirt the best?

In general I’d go J. Crew over Express.

  22. BenR says

    October 9, 2011 at 1:13 PM

Yeah, J.Crew is higher quality and more classic style. A lot of Express stuff is just not well-made, requires tons of extra care and feeding to keep it from breaking down.

I recently picked up a black corded blazer and want to pair it with jeans. Need some opinions. First, what color jeans? Second, what color belt and shoes are appropriate?
