For as easy as it is to bag on the eyebrow raisingly expensive J. Crew Timex watches ($150 and $195 respectively)… they seem to have sparked something of a style renaissance with Timex.
Look at the Timex Originals collection (specifically the early 1900’s, 1950’s, and 1970’s inspired watches.) The blue dial 70’s watch has shades of the Tag Heuer Monaco, and could be had for less than $60. And that’s “could” in the past tense. These things are tough to find.
An easier to find and perhaps slightly better looking option is the Timex T Series Perpetual Calendar. Simple face, textured crown, perfect low 40s mm diameter, and get a load of that sextant shaped contrasting day & date cutout. Gotta love the day window heading North/South while the date runs horizontally below. Looks like it fell out of the originals collection, but it’s in a different wing on the Timex Website.
*Warning: The white dial isn’t available on the Timex site, and they were at one point being fulfilled by Amazon. As of now it looks like it’s just a buy from a 3rd party through Amazon, which can get a little iffy. So be warned because, y’know, nobody wants to buy a… counterfeit Timex? Sounds weird to say, but still…
Hmm. I was set on the white easy reader, but this one I like more. But do I like it $80 more?
I think the reason the blue Timex Q Dial is so difficult to find is that it was mostly marketed in the UK. I bought one a while back and when you google it by model number (T2N405) almost all the hits are UK-based, or else European. It seems as though Nordstrom was the only US retailer to get their hands on that particular model.
The Q Dial is a nice-looking watch, but the leather band is cheap and plastic-y and it’s the loudest-ticking quartz I’ve ever encountered. You could buy it from one of the UK retailers but I don’t think it’s worth the extra trouble and expense… I’d say the watch was an ok value for the ~$50 I paid, but not necessarily at full retail and certainly not full retail plus the bad exchange rate and international shipping.
Ah yes, the old counterfeit Timex. I think they’re going for $5 on Canal St.
I bought the blue Q dial and I’m having problems with the battery. Got it with a dead battery from Nordstrom and then when I got the back off to replace the battery it would not go back on. Took it to a jeweler who couldn’t get it on either. I was in a rush so I didn’t leave it with him for when the watch repair man came in. Did you have any similar experience or a trick to getting the back on?
The White Dial is now fulfilled by Amazon. Also, I’ve been on the hunt in my area for the Blue Q dial, I’ve actually found the black-faced version going for about $40 locally.
I haven’t had that experience, and haven’t removed the caseback yet. I’d say let the actual watch repairman get his hands on it. They know what they’re doing.
