GAP Vintage Oxford Polo – $24.15*** w/code GPSURPRISE ($34.50)
***Credit to OnlyShawn in the comments for noticing the GAP sale. It is one of those goofy “select customers” sales. So you might get 35% off, you might get 25% off. Price above reflects 30% off. Ends 6/24.
Button down collars were originally created to keep a polo player’s collar from flying up into his face during a match. Most of us associate the button down collar with dress shirts (thanks Brooks Brothers), not the short sleeved polos most of us reach for when we’re looking for something other than a tee.

Not many of us will be picking up a mallet and hopping on a horse anytime soon, but a polo with a button down collar is still plenty functional. Polos don’t have collar stays. And if you’re a collar freak who loves his collars to hold their shape, far too many polo shirts have collars which roll, curl, and more or less look like garbage after a few hours of wear.
Solution: Put some buttons on the collar points and anchor those suckers down.
But do the buttons just look too off? Some could argue that it’s too much going on around your throat. The buttons on this GAP version are far from dainty. It’s also far from dressed up, and not because of the “sporty” collar buttons. The fabric is a super textured slub cotton which makes it look extremely relaxed. But the fit is decent and trim through the sides, with the sleeves hitting at that perfect not too long / not too short mid to upper tricep area.
Would you wear it? And is this a style you’d wish more retailers would adopt?
Leave it all in the comments section below…
.
Would you wear it….TO THE GUN SHOW?
I don’t think I would.
Too…….many………BUTTONS!!!
I find it no different from the button down s/s oxfords I’ve seen around. So I’d have to say yes.
This is one I’ve been looking to find for a while now. As always, Joe, you deliver!
That fit looks incredible. I often have trouble with polos being too long (thanks to the tail in the back).
The button idea isn’t terrible, but I’m not a fan of the contrast color of the white button on black polo
Not sure I would wear it, but it might make a nice subtle gift to the chronic collar-poppers in your life.
I think it would look much, much better if the buttons were the same as the shirt color. However, that means they can’t buy white buttons in massive bulk amounts, so..
I…uh…agree.
With a more tailored fit and less contrasy buttons I’d go for it. The great Mossimo polos don’t seem to roll at the collar though like most do on me.
I’d wear it. It adds visual interest to an otherwise plain look.
It’s fine…just not for me.
Yeah! Holy crap Joe, you been hitting the iron?
It’s either weird lighting or the piles of HGH I’ve been injecting. One of the two.
also, “gpsurprise” gets you 30% off any gap purchase. not sure if it works elsewhere in the gap family. (almost mistyped the “g” in “gap” as an “f”. whoops)
It’s a bit of an unusual look, just because I’m not used to seeing button down collars on anything other than dress shirts….but I think I’d give it a try, it looks good in your pic, so hopefully that translate to life outside the lens.
Yeah I usally wear things more tone down anyways so the buttons wouldn’t clutter the outfit
Nice catch! Both the code and the f – g. Updated.
And, looks like a Gap.com specific code. No BR. SUMMER24 gets you 24% off Old Navy through midnight ET.
My first reaction was a resounding “no”. But after a bit of thought, I would wait to render judgement until I saw it on me. I very much agree with those who take issue with the contrasting buttons.
We are agreeable people, you and I.
saw this in the store on saturday. tried it on and debated for a good 10 minutes and decided it was just a little too much going on at my neck so i let it go.
Same- if the buttons were a bit more muted, I would absolutely wear this. With the contrast buttons, it’s too much
The style and texture of the shirt looks pretty awesome. You could always leave the collar unbuttoned and cut off the buttons if need be.
