Getting to know the “New” Dappered
Ta-da. Yep, we’ve done some spring cleaning around these parts. Thanks for noticing. At first glance it might look like this website has been totally revamped, but the guts of what Dappered does and what Dappered is all about are still the same.
We’ve been toying with the idea of giving Dappered a new layout for awhile now and we just recently flipped the switch. But inevitably there will be bugs. Flipping switches does that. So if you notice any of those? Let us know in the comments section on this post, or even drop us a note via the Facebook page.
Same group of people are running this thing, same (hopefully?) down to earth attitude, same zero tolerance for trolls and tiresome internet a-holes in the comments section. Different lipstick, same old pig (and same charming self-deprecating sense of humor).
Some people hate change. Some like it in controlled moderation. And then there are those who one day quit their jobs, sell their home, and drive around the country for an entire year. This “new” version of Dappered should hopefully appeal to all of the above. Maybe.
We kinda like what we’ve got going on here. Seems like a few of you enjoy it too. So although it might look a little different, we’re still sticking with what got us here for the foreseeable future.
As always, thank you for your support.
No search feature?
Moved it to the lower right on the sidebar but it’s not showing up. And the first bug has been found. You win… um… our appreciation 🙂
Thanks, Robert. You should see it in the lower right now — under the sites we like.
Might not be a bug, but in the black navigation bar, “Grooming” is all alone on a second line, under “Drinks”, “Clothing”, etc. I’m figuring it’s a bug as it looks a bit unsightly, like a typesetting ‘paragraph orphan’. This is in OS X Safari with screen resolution to spare.
Ryan — are you zoomed in at all or at the default settings?
I’m getting that too in Firefox, OSX, also with resolution to spare and not zoomed in.
I get it on chrome when way zoomed out, but it looks good when zoomed in “regularly”
Gents, I tweaked the spacing a bit and it should help things. Let me know if it’s better for you. Hold down ‘shift’ when you click refresh to clear the old stylesheet.
No luck. Tried shift-refreshing and emptying cache. ‘Grooming’ still hangs zoomed out all the way and when viewed at ‘actual size’, on both Safari and Firefox (both OSX). Ditto for my other OSX computer.
Happening to me as well, in Chrome. If I zoom in quite a bit it pops up on the other side of “etc”
As long as the RSS feeds keep pushing me great content, I’ll be a happy camper.
Ok, try two. I did this: http://css-tricks.com/prevent-menu-stepdown/
Any better?
Looks good overall, but I too am seeing Grooming on the second line. Also, putting the search bar so far down is a usability travesty. Especially for new users who may not know to look there (you have to scroll quite a bit).
Grooming on the second line for me. And it takes a bit of time to find the Search bar. Might I suggest moving it to the top of the page to make it more user-friendly?
+1 Second line for grooming as well (Chrome, OSX). I agree with Tarun, search bar should be the at the very top, not very bottom.
Thanks, Bryan. I bet this is it. I’ve updated the fonts.
I don’t know if this is a bug, the last website design did this, but the button to switch from mobile view doesn’t usually work. Would it be possible to kill mobile view for tablets, altogether? Is that a problem with wordpress? If somebody has a tablet, they can view the standard website, just fine.
I also would like the mobile view disabled or more easily disableable. It doesn’t seem to show all the pictures attached to the post, and when I view Dappered on my iPhone I almost always disable the mobile for that reason.
The “View Comments” text on the front page doesn’t work.
Tim and Bryan — We upgraded to a more sophisticated mobile service last week. There’s now a phone-specific version and an iPad version of the site, and the cookie handling is much better than before (at least in my experience). Let me know if you’re having any better luck this week. Both versions should display ALL the graphics included in the web version of the post.
Bryan, Tarun, Mike — Do you guys USE the search bar? The data suggest nobody actually does on Dappered.com
Why does ‘Etc.’ come before ‘Grooming’?
I use it all the time. Mainly because I am new to the site and would like to read the older posts. Also comes in handy when you need to brush-up on something.
Mr. Guest — This was the one bug we knew we had going into this, and one of the last ones to get fixed. Check out the home page now — all should be well.
MagM — Question everything, right? Well, good call. Menu has been updated. “Etc.” isn’t 2nd from the end or alphabetical — it’s last. The rest are alphabetical.
Kristian — In case you missed it, the search bar is on the lower right. 🙂
Applause for Paul. Great work and thank you all for the bug search.
still no forum eh?
still no forum eh?
I definitely do.
And I’ll probably use it for hours come next December when I need to upgrade my wardrobe.
Whether or not any registered user uses is irrelevant. You want user-friendly functionality built into the site. If a new member pops in and wants to search around, you do not want him/her to spend time looking for it. It would be like searching for the search.
If you still don’t agree with me, I’m sure you’ll concur that it should at least take precedence over the advertisements that are above it. How many people click those?
I didn’t even see that you had replied, Paul. Good thing that the weekly recap pointed me back here.
Anyways, the iphone is working fine, in the sense that pressing the ‘switch to regular view’ works but the iPad doesn’t. No matter what you do, you are stuck in the mobile version of the site. I really would recommend having tablets just access the regular site, if possible.
