Would you wear it? The Buttonless Peacoat

Cardinal of Canada “Rev Duboc” Wool Blend Coat – $246.90 (reg. $495.00)

This is the thing about almost all on-sale merchandise.  If it was totally perfect without a single detail that could be questioned, then it wouldn’t be on sale.

Not sure about this one.  $250 is pretty steep but with a retail price of $500, you’re probably getting a really nice coat.  The epaulets stand out but don’t look outrageously big, the tabs at the cuffs are a nice touch, and the trench inspired gunflaps provide those two great diagonal lines that cut in at the shoulders.  Nice button front pockets and the length looks great.

But no buttons?  A zipper instead?  Placing it off center was probably a good choice.  If you’re going to break from tradition and throw in a modern detail, might as well place it in an updated way.

Your thoughts?  Do you embrace this modernized look?  Leave your vote in the comments section below…

I think it looks great. If it was on sale somewhere around here, i would give it a try.
But anyway: What do you think about the sleeve length of that guy in the photo? It is how you should do it on a coat? I mean on a jacket, i can see it, but a coat mostly is supposed to be warm. It doesnt even look like an inch for the cuff anymore, more like 2-3 inches.

No, it looks so … empty. Would you wear a buttonless suit jacket or blazer? No. There’s something so elementary about it that just doesn’t do it for me.

That sleeve length is ridiculous for a coat, like you said.

I’m not so sure… looks kinda off to my eye. I like the buttons on peacoats, and certainly in any other colour, I have to agree with tess and say I think it looks a bit empty. Even in black.

An interesting concept, and it IS good to have off-centre… but not for me, at least not ony a peacoat. It’s just one of those classic looks, and without buttons (preferably with anchors on them), it just seems devoid. And yeah wow those sleeves ARE short. Insanity.

    Cheers,
    Ben

Hell yeah I would wear that coat. Probably not versatile enough to be my “main” winter coat, but to add some variety it would be great. I prefer to see 100% wool in this price range, but construction matters just as much.

I agree with thee above sentiments about the sleeve length. Concerning the zipper – eh not my cup of tea. I prefer to have coats that button. Apart from the fact that I like the look of a pea coat with buttons, I think they offer a bit more variety in how I can close the coat than does a zipper. If I just want to secure the coat so it doesn’t move much while I walk I have the option of just buttoning one of 3, and if I need to bundle up I can do that too. When a coat zips, you really lose that variety in how you close the coat.

I would never wear a wool coat with a zipper.

I would not wear it. A pea coat is one of those classics that needs absolutely no improvements or alterations. I would just get the original.

YES – I just cant wear anything with buttons – I cant stand buttons – like some people cant stand spiders or snakes….
