Wardrobe Staples – The Well Tailored Chino Sportcoat

J. Crew Chino Ludlow Sportcoat – $138.00

It’s back.  J. Crew’s Chino Sportcoat has been absent on JCrew.com since the start of fall, and now that spring lines are starting to pop up it’s once again available for purchase.

Cotton chino sportcoats are an incredibly easy way to upgrade your look for minimal cost. You can wear them with anything, just about anywhere, and it’s bizarre how much better you’ll look after you put one on.  You can even wear it now in the dead of winter to warm up your otherwise cold and drab wardrobe, and don’t be afraid of wearing a black sweater underneath.  They’re also widely available via a bunch of different brands.  From left, below:

  • Lands’ End Canvas 3-button Chino Blazer – $89.50
  • Kenneth Cole 2-button cotton blazer – $169.50
  • LL Bean Signature 2-button Twill Blazer – $135.00
    .

But honestly the J. Crew Ludlow seems to be a step above the rest.  The cut is great, no third button unlike the LEC, and despite it being half a great looking summer suit, the LL Bean Signature has patch pockets.  They’re not too noticeable, but they’re still there.

Compared to other J. Crew sportcoats, even at $138 the Ludlow is relatively inexpensive.  When they do go on sale size selection seems to tank. Waiting another month might save you serious money by going with a GAP or Old Navy option.  But the quality won’t be as good, and those will absolutely need to get tailored.

Uncle Nordy wants this stuff gone. Cashmere sweaters. Lots of chukkas. Plenty of Bonobos.

I agree that out of the three the J.Crew Ludow looks the best.
Stimulated by this article i did some researching into cotton sportcoats at some of my favorite sites. I came across a similar cotton jacket by on FCUK.com that’s on sale. The Bluff jacket in sisal, with sizes 42-44-46 still available, is only $65.00 plus shipping. May also be worth a look.

This is one of the items that depends heavily on your skin tone. It is not going to compliment everyone.

What’s wrong with patch pockets? A chino a blazer is definitely on the casual side of the scale, which makes patch pockets ideal, I think.

I like the look of this blazer alot, but can it be worn with anything other than dark jeans and the matching bottoms?

I messed up by not grabbing it last year when it was on sale forever…not this time around.

Actually those of us who did buy it when it was heavily discounted earlier this year ended up being disappointed. They cancelled our orders a couple months later.

That said, I picked this up during my holiday shopping this year. J.Crew was doing a 30% off store wide and I couldn’t resist. Very happy with the purchase, it fits just as well as my other J.Crew blazer and suit. No tailoring needed for me.

i ordered this like 5 months ago when i thought it was discounted. I figured my order got canceled like everyone else’s did b/c i was the charge never showed up. well a few weeks ago i saw the charge (no discount.) and the jacket came a few days later. The jacket is great, but god damn does j crew suck at customer service, namely their 15 dollar shipping fee.

Email their customer service team and tell them what happened. I’m sure they’ll refund your shipping fee due to your extensive wait.

I’ve had nothing but good encounters with J.Crew customer service, just be polite – they hate saying no.

I have to agree. Yes, J.Crew shipping costs do suck. But thats not really related to customer service. In-store, on the phone, and via email they are always very accommodating. You can always get a real person response through all mediums, and they are happy to help. I’ve used it on a few occasions.

Also, if you order things in-store they waive the shipping fee fyi.

Also picked it up last week for $108 plus tax, in-store. Got it back from the tailor today after getting the sleeves shortened.

    Joe,
Do you have this and if yes, what size did you get and how’s the fit? I’m 5’8″ 170lbs and I got a Medium (IIRC, you’re similar in height/weight). I feel like the sides can come in more but I’m unsure.
