Here’s a decision. Lands’ End Canvas is running their winter sale right now, and through Tuesday January 11th you can take an additional 20% off their sale merchandise (the extra discount shows up in the cart). Plus, they’ll throw in free shipping if your purchase is over $50. The blazer you see above barely makes that cut.
But J. Crew just got a bunch of new stuff in. And their new Ludlow cord sportcoat looks pretty impressive. Two blazers, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages. Here’s the argument for each:
Lands’ End Canvas
Pros: Good price. Great color. “Refined, tailored fit”. Can be worn as a 2-button. Free shipping
Cons: Patch pockets = casual. Might still need some tailoring. Three buttons.
J. Crew
Pros: Ludlow trim fit. Tiny wale = dressed up. Grey color is hugely versatile. Perfect pockets.
Cons: Pricey, but not that expensive for J. Crew. Shipping is an asinine $15.50 free with the code MUSTHAVE
The Lands’ End Canvas option usually costs $130. Around $50 for any blazer is a great price. But you gotta settle a bit on some of the details. The J. Crew sportcoat is a new arrival and is priced as such. It’s also nails. Nothing wrong with it. The fabric is a pincord 18-wale (lines per square inch. Bigger number = thinner line) It looks terrific.
But how much is perfection worth? Would you be willing to pay more than 3x as much for the J. Crew if you had the $50 option staring you in the face? Leave your vote in the comments section below…

I’ve got a blazer from J. Crew (best looking plaid blazer in town) and they really do a good job. That, and the fact that I hate the patch pockets on the Lands’ End offering would put me in the J. Crew camp. That said, that’s a BIG price difference.
I have 2 blazers from jcrew, and neither have required tailoring. Also, I saw this one in store I think when I was Xmas shopping. I almost picked it up due to 30% discount, but decided to pick up their khaki colored non-cord blazer instead. Was a tough decision, but I already had a greyish and didn’t have a khaki.
The 3-button design on Land’s End makes it an easy win for J. Crew (to me). When will 3 button blazers be extinct?
@Joe G: 3-button blazers aren’t going anywhere. Many people still prefer them. I have a couple, I just button the middle button. Although, due to my shorter torso, I too prefer the 2-button.
FYI, free shipping at the J. Crew site for $150 plus with code MUSTHAVE.
@Jethro: Updated. Thanks! Great catch…
I’m trying to pick up a few things from Lands End, any idea how to get the free shipping?
@Larry: Should be automatic if it’s over $50…
Free shipping isn’t happening for me.
Took some searching, but there’s a link on their twitter that “activates” both offers at once (@landsendcanvas).
Sorry guys, that’s on me. Guess there were some codes you needed. Here they are – Use code CANVASFS50 and pin 3311 for the extra 20% off PLUS free shipping over $50. Updated up above too. Hopefully it’ll stay active. If it doesn’t, the code CANVAS20 and pin 7522 will get you just the extra 20% off.
Code CANVASFS50 and pin 3311 worked like a charm, got 20% off and free shipping. Thanks.
