The plain, real leather jacket, for $100

ASOS Collection Leather Biker Bomber – $103.44 (reg .$207)

Not all of us are leather jacket guys.  Personally, if I was looking to upgrade my casual waist length jacket, this would be the direction I’d head in.  But over the last few weeks there’s been enough talk in the comments section as well as a few emails sent in asking about affordable leather jackets, that this had to be passed along.

One hundred bucks is pretty tough to beat.  Anything close to that price point is almost certain to be a faux like-leather jacket, which honestly won’t upset too many.

The description says the shell is 100% leather, and the design is unusually simple.  One chest pocket that looks like it was pulled off a suit, two hand pockets at the front, and a moto collar with a strap that threads through.  As annoyingly long as that tab might be, it looks from the pics like it’s real easy just to tuck back in under the closest loop.

$103.44 on sale.  Sizes Small – XXL available.

I don’t believe it. I bought a blazer from them a couple weeks ago. It claimed to be 100% wool. I got it and it certainly was not! They have since updated the description

Not for me as I do not wear leather jackets although the price seems good. At least it is not made of the awful “patch leather” that you see on really cheap jackets.

I love leather jackets. I have 2 in my closet, and this one looks fine. Although suspiciously low in price. I think either way I’m gonna pull the trigger on this one. I was gonna get a biker jacket from Schott but its much more expensive and a lot less versatile. Maybe next year I’ll get it…

I am not a leather expert, but I’m pretty sure there are various levels of leather quality. If I were to buy a leather jacket I’d probably save up so I can get a good high quality one. While this is a nice find I’m not sure how long it will last or if it will be a “you get what you pay for” kind of situation.

@Erik: wow, another hit against asos. I was never a big fan of theirs after some disappointments in the past and this is just another nail in the coffin. Too bad 🙁

Did they change the description? It now says the shell is “Real Leather,” not 100% Leather.

@Brian..You’re right, there are different levels of quality in leather and after what Erik said I might hold off on this. I guess going into it its a bad reason to buy it JUST because its leather. And its gonna piss me off if I get it and find out its really not.
BTW, this is the jacket I’m looking into getting from Schott:

Although pricey, its a beauty. Its gonna cost me a few nights out but well worth it I think. 🙂

Am I crazy or does this leather look like it has more shine than other real leather jackets?

Leather usually falls into 4 categories. “Top grain” leather is the best quality and comes from the top part of the hide, which is the strongest, has the nicest texture and looks even better with age. “Full grain leather” is a misleading name cause it is actually the middle layer of hide. “Genuine leather” is the innermost layer of the hide and is 3rd in quality. “Bonded leather” is all the leather trimmings and powder left over on the factory floor that get glued together and polished to look like an animal skin. I hope this jacket isn’t bonded leather…

I am so tempted by this, but afraid it may be poor quality. What does everyone make of the texture of the leather shown in the close up shot? It looks a little odd, strangely porous. Does that give any indication of this item’s quality?

My only leather coat is a lambskin goose down coat. And it is as smooth as a baby’s butt.
