Oktoberfest is in full swing over in Munich, Germany and a key part of any Oktoberfest celebration is, of course, the beer. Oktoberfest beers are actually M¤rzens, a type of beer traditionally brewed in March and drunk over the summer and during the harvest celebrations of the fall.
I love these beers, though some people find them boring. I’ve honestly never had one I’d call amazing, but I’ve also never had a truly bad one. It’s more of a workhorse style of beer: kind of simple, sweet malt flavors with a touch of hops to balance, easy to drink (from enormous steins) and refreshing.
Here’s a six-pack of my favorites:
#1 Hofbr¤u Oktoberfestbier – One of the few breweries to supply the real Oktoberfest. Surprisingly light in color, …..but full of flavor, crisp and clean
#2 Sprecher Oktoberfest – More of a toasted flavor, creamy and rich with spice notes
#3 Harpoon Octoberfest – A little hoppier than the others with fruit notes
#4 Flying Dog Dogtoberfest – Lots of malt, with a rich caramel flavor
#5 Bell’s Octoberfest – Full, slightly sweet flavor of grain and malt
#6 Weihenstephaner Festbier – Light and crisp, probably the least malt flavor of the group but very easy to drink
What are you drinking this season?
