Must Haves On Sale: High Quality Shoe Trees

October 6, 2010 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Here's why.

Allen Edmonds Shoe Trees – $22.46 with free two-day shipping (reg. $29.95)

Or, $20 with free standard shipping via AllenEdmonds.com (credit bc in the comments)

Maybe you just don’t have the cash on hand to take advantage of the currently running Allen Edmonds 5th Ave. sale.  Take comfort in the fact that you can own a little piece of the A.E. empire for around $20.  And they’re something you need to have in your closet as it is.

Your shoes need shoe trees.  Properly storing your clothes doesn’t end at your ankles.  Not keeping shoe trees in your unworn shoes would be like balling up your wool suit and stuffing it in a drawer.

Leather is a skin.  And just like your skin, it soaks stuff up.  Good stuff like polish, as well as bad stuff like sweat and salt from your feet.  Leather can show the effects of gravity over time if it’s not supported.  Just like your skin.  The cedar in shoe trees helps remove that bad moisture your feet left behind, plus their shape prevents the force of gravity from pulling your shoes down into a crinkled mess.  And if there’s one thing we know about gravity, it’s cruel, and it’s relentless:

Damn.  Well anywho…

You need shoe trees for each pair of dress shoes in your collection.  No exceptions.  Why Allen Edmonds?  Because just like their shoes, their shoe trees are made in the United States.  And bad shoe trees are a pain to get into your oxfords.  Especially after a long night out on the town.  You think this guy is struggling?  Try getting a pair of cheap, rough moving shoe trees into your black lace-ups after four martinis.  It’s not pleasant.

The Allen Edmonds trees are now on sale for around $20 with with free two day shipping via endless.

Not sure what size to get? Regular widths (D) sizes 10, 10.5, and 11 are all large.  Here’s the chart:

So if I read this correctly, I should have a shoe tree for every shoe? Right now I just have one that I rotate into the shoe I just took off.

while this is a good deal, if you go over to the allen edmonds site, their shoe trees are only $20 right now. and standard shipping is free.

I’m a 9.5-10.5, depending on the shoe. Do I go with a medium or a large?

For those that can afford to have shoe trees in each pair it would be nice and couldnt hurt, but for those like me $20+ for each pair of shoes is a little ridiculous. I read an Esquire article yesterday that says if you cant shell out the cash, one pair is enough. Its that first hour after taking off you shoes thats the most crucial. Just make sure that they are a full backed, split toe, untreated cedar shoe tree and youll be fine.

    @Brice thanks

Allen Edmonds sells them, but I doubt they make them. If you like the little tag, fine. Twenty bucks is more then double what I pay. I never heard of a bad shoe tree or anyone having difficulty operating them.

@al: My $19.99 Alfani cheap ones beg to differ with you. They’re a pain.

@Al, I’m confused? Allen Edmonds is famous for actually making their own stuff, and on US soil too. Yours probably aren’t cedar, if they are even wood. But that’s fine.

I don’t have a shoe tree to my name, so I grabbed a pair. I buy Allen Edmond and Johnston & Murphy shoes on Ebay with terrific luck, but I hadn’t toughened up and spent money on maintenance. I also bought a vintage shoe polish box at a thrift store, so I’m stocking that and learning to take care of my shoes like an adult.

I actually scored a few really good cedar, quite on par with the ones that are listed on this page. I by no means would pay 20 bucks for those things when when i can get them regularly at Syms/Filenes Basment (for those of you who live in the boston area) for 10-15 dollars.

Found another good deal — $12.50 at JosABank. Not sure of the quality, but the price is good.

    Stephen:
If you are “learning to take care of my shoes like an adult,” you are wasting your time. You would be better served learning how to act like an adult.
