American Eagle AE Uniform Polo – $19.95 ($24.50)
Ever since the apparent demise of the Express Signature Polo, I’ve been on a mission to find a slim fit replacement.
I guarantee you this ain’t it.
It’s a pique polo. I hate pique. BUT… it is slim fit, and some of you seem to dig the pique polos. Yes it’s made by the teenage favorite American Eagle, but for once they don’t put their AE Eagle logo on the chest. Or anywhere else visible for that matter. Why?
It’s made to be used as part of a common, simple and approved school uniform.
Perfect. Now get your butts back to class whippersnappers. Those of us in the rat-race are more than happy to take a few of these completely plain, trim fit basic polos off your hands while you’re in front of the chalkboard.
Nah, I think I’ll hold out for the return of the Express signature. I asked several people in-store and the consensus is that they will return in the Spring, at which point I will be getting 2 of each. Black and baby blue will have to suffice til then.
Pardon my ignorance, but I keep hearing pique polos, and I have to ask: What is pique? And what is the opposite of pique, if that is not your preference?
I only own 2 polos. There old, kinda graphicy, so I guess this basic primer would be useful to me.
I am not really sure of the technical term to use, but Pique is a type of weaving I believe, used on I’d say the majority of Polos I have seen. Looks sort of like this. All of my polos pre-dappered were pique, and when I got my first Express Signature polo I was a bit thrown off by the jersey feel. That is, the weaving is much finer and it doesn’t have the discernible little textured weave that pique has. Pique will naturally have a stiffer feel to it, I think, and—after trying both—is less comfortable than the jersey.
@Tarun: Great explanation Bryan. Pique (never to be confused with pima) is a boxy weave. Thick and spongey. Weighty. Not real smooth and for me, feels like I’m wearing a blanket. And any kind of moister gets sopped up and goes nowhere. I do prefer jersey / stretch cotton polos which are much smoother, lighter, and almost always a trimmer fit. Scroll down here for the fabric definition from dictionary.com. But I also like the first definition for the word: “to affect with sharp irritation and resentment.” Kinda how I feel about most pique polos…
I feel the Target Mossimo Athletic Fit Polo is a great replacement. Obviously it isn’t perfect, but it’s only $7.99.
I, too, have grown to love the Target Mossimo Athletic Fit Polos. So cheap.
H&M has some cheap polos for $10. They’re color selection is limited to grey, navy, and black but if you’re not looking for any bright colors, it’s a good option. They are however, pique polos.
H&M has also the blend of cotton/spandex like the Express ones you reference so much. I think it was $13, as opposed to the pique ones for less.
I don’t like the big box on the upper back from the tag sewn in. Lands End Canvas makes my favorite polo. I prefer pique over jersey but they have both.
Hate to bump, but anyone know where I can find these? 🙁
