The Official Dappered.com Take

LOOK # 1 – Indoor Outerwear: NO – (Top Left) That’s a lot of layers. Details says: “You want to channel a Maine outdoorsman on a weekend trip to the city.” I don’t live in Maine, but… I’m not seeing that happening near Bangor. Plus outerwear indoors, even if they’re vests, just looks silly. He’s like a 2010 version of Marty McFly… “Hey Biff, get a load of this guy’s life preserver. Dork thinks he’s gonna drown.”
LOOK # 2 – Suit, no tie: NOT LIKE THAT – (Top Middle) Nice suit. But what’s with the hooded sweatshirt under it? Take a dark navy v-neck, layer it over a white oxford. Same color palate, with zero of the desperation.
Trend #1 – Rubber Dive Watches: YES – For those of us who feel almost naked when not wearing a watch, these are go-anywhere beat em’ up standards. But don’t spend $5k on a Chanel. Consider this dark Nautica for $200.

Trend #2 – Wingtip Boots with Rubber Athletic Soles: NO – Wingtip boots with the usual leather or dark rubber soles? Sure. The slapping of athletic soles on wingtip boots just goes too far. Try the back-ordered Urban Outfitters Ritano instead. (Notice, no goofy sole). Tough to imagine the bottoms from a pair of Reebok Pumps on those.
LOOK #3 – Casual but Luxe: YES – (Top Right) Nothing wrong with looking good on your downtime. Just don’t dress all “luxe” if you’re heading over to a pal’s house to watch a football game. When in Rome. Y’know?
Trend #3 – The Casual No Fuss Suit: YES – All of your suits, if tailored correctly and stored with respect, should become No Fuss. If you’re just starting to dress better, wearing a suit will feel fussy. Eventually, it’ll become your favorite thing to wear, and that which you’re most comfortable in.
Trend #4 – Adult Sweat Pants: NO – Stop it.
Agreements, disagreements, and defenses for wearing “Adult Sweat Pants” go in the comments section below.
I totally agree on all points Joe!
The thought of seeing some poor no questions asked consumer of Details’ advice wearing those sweatpants “like jeans” outfitted with “suede desert boots and a snug knit or fitted blazer” is just too much! Those hideous creations (note the cuff zippers) had better not catch on…
Those Urban Outfitters wingtips might be the next things I buy. Sucks they are on back order but the price is right and they look really good.
The “adult sweatpants” were kind of laughable hehe. I also liked the Back To The Future reference. I agree on all points, well done 🙂
Best part: The sweatpants are made of wool and cost $900.
I’m still curious what they look like worn though — and if the cut and style of ’em are that radically different from super-relaxed fit chinos.
The brogue sneakers are also extremely pricey. And I also agree (amazingly on all points). I’m head over heels for that damn chanel watch but I gotta say Joe you came up with some great alternatives…thanks.
And I think I’m gonna pick up “Back to the Future”.
Here’s an equally fashionable and cheaper alternative
to your $200 Nautica.
Its got that classic Omega/Rolex dive watch look and at sub-$50, is a real bargain. Team it up with a $10 NATO strap to match your tastes.
