Boden Portobello Jacket – $148.00

I have zero experience with Boden. I’ve never ordered anything from them, seen anything in person by them, nor do I end up at their website that often. But their current fall lineup of J. Crew meets L.L. Bean Signature looks great. Even their quilted slim jacket (which a lot of you guys hated) caught my eye yesterday.
Everything is designed in London and then like almost everyone else, a good deal of the manufacturing is farmed out to overseas. But Boden does a nice job about being transparent about it. They even list the countries where their stuff is made, and the Ethical Policy claims they do factory visits to make sure everything is on the up and up.
Onto the jacket. At first glance they don’t look real contoured, but if you look at the seams on the back it seems like they’re curving inward. The pics of the blazers on the models look like they’re tapered in a touch, and there’s always your tailor.
The fabrics and patterns look stellar. The grey and brown herringbone are unlined (thank you) and the sartorially rich Prince of Wales check is fully lined. They even come with functional buttons at the cuffs.
Expensive? Yeah, a little.
But where else are you going to find a stand out cotton blazer like one of these?

That brown herringbone looks amazing! I especially like the working buttons. The POW looks awesome too, but I’m not sure I can pull it off, which in my mind means I can’t. Do they have any stores in the US? I’m just not that crazy about ordering something without trying it on. I’m too “inbetween sizes” for that.
My only experience with boden is kids clothes. My daughter has a bunch of stuff handed down from an older cousin. Cannot comment on fit, but the quality is top notch. This stuff has lasted two kids, who beat the crap out of clothes, and they look close to new.
Use code H135 for 15% off, free shipping, & free returns. Great to try it on with no loss if it doesn’t fit.
Nice! Thanks Ryan.
I think all three look very good, and I could see myself wearing them, except for I don’t like how brightly colored the fabric is under the collar. It’s a bit much, especially on the gray coat
Update & Product Review:
I took my POW Portobello jacket to my tailor to be taken in. FYI I’m 6’3 200lbs and ordered a L. I actually had to have the sleeves taken in half an inch, which is definitely a first for my long arms. Anyway, my tailor has been doing men’s clothing for 30 years and kept going on and on about this jacket.
She kept pointing out parts of the lining and talking about how they stopped making jackets like that decades ago (to cut costs). As a layman to textiles, I could tell that the details were unique but had to take her word for it that they were better.
She said that if this jacket were made today in the states, it would cost the manufacturer $400 to make. So … I think it’s a good jacket.
It’s much thicker than a standard blazer so you shouldn’t have to wear a peacoat or overcoat on top of this unless it’s well into freezing temps. I like the POW pattern but it will be more difficult to match than the other color choices.
I hope this helps anyone considering buying this jacket in the future.
