GQ’s Brett Fahlgren and Calvin Klein Creative Director Kevin Carrigan has once again partnered up to create a style video showcasing Carrigan’s picks for the upcoming season.
Carrigan takes Fahlgren through four distinct looks CK is promoting for the summer. Here’s the question. Would you wear any of it? Below is the video, after that some observations, then the comments section. Would you wear any of these looks as a whole? Or just pieces? None of it? All of it?
Go ahead and show up to a cocktail party wearing this getup and see if you’ll be comfortable. Hell, see if anyone else will be comfortable when you walk through the door. Pieces of it work, but all together it’s just too much. The jacket, although a little sharp in the shoulder, is decent. Even paired with a white pant (try a chino instead of a skinny jean) it could look great. But when you take the v-neck, skinny jeans, rolled up cuffs on both the jeans and jacket, and then put your sockless feet in jet black dress shoes… you’ll just look silly.
I’m going to save myself a lot of typing.
No. Never. Let’s move on.
Mr. Carrigan mentions how this summer line is “very American, very iconic Calvin.” This look is more European than anything to me. Almost Glinda the Good Witch meets Kraftwerk. And no, that’s not a good thing. No belt, no tie, shirt buttoned all the way up. No thank you. Biggest winner from this group is the shoes.
This is something I might almost wear. The shorts are getting there. But the hardware and zippers on the jacket are too spastic. Call me crazy but I might swap out the jacket for this one from Banana Republic, brighten up the shorts a little with these from Lands End Canvas, and then change the heathered fabric sneakers to Jack Purcells
Final Analysis: Calvin Klein seems to be in a weird place. This stuff screams way too high fashion to the average guy. But the CK brand is too accessible compared to Prada and say D&G. Now that they’re both owned by the same company, maybe Tommy Hilfiger could teach Calvin Klein a thing or two about having style but still remaining down to earth. Most men want to look good, but certainly don’t want to look like they just walked off a fashion show runway.
So would you wear any of these looks? Got a favorite of the four outfits? Leave it all in the comments section below… and in case you missed it: Kraftwerk.
