NOTE: Pardon the early re-run, but the Gap Pima Cotton V-Neck that originally appeared here on May 5th just went on sale. It was a decent bargain at $45, and now that they’ve dropped the price to $36.99 for Gray and Black (two colors of v-necks you need to have in your closet) it’s worth a re-post. The pima cotton means they’re perfect for cool summer nights, but can also be an every-day piece once Fall and Winter rolls around. All sizes available.
Gap Summer Weight Pima Cotton V-Neck – $44.50 $36.99
Pima cotton is stronger, thinner, and softer than its other cotton cousins. It’s grown mainly in South America, Australia, and Egypt (where it’s then called, brace yourselves, Egyptian cotton). Not surprisingly, people from those regions know a thing or two about hot weather, which is why these Pima Cotton v-necks from Gap are the perfect summer sweater.
Layered over a button down or your t-shirt when the sun sets, pima cotton is the right fabric for the warmer months. Actually, it’s the right fabric year round for any guy that hates the feeling of a squishy and thick, bumpy cotton sweater. Not to sound like an SAT question, but… Merino Wool is to Wool, as Pima Cotton is to Cotton.
Got that?
Pima cotton feels like it’s infused with silk (sometimes it is) making it extremely smooth. It’s the one fabric you could comfortably layer up with, even under a casual blazer, to dress up your summer evening wardrobe.
I think this one depends somewhat on your geographical location. In my opinion, anyone south of the Mason-Dixon line wearing a sweater between about May and late September is probably going to look and feel ridiculous, no matter how light the fabric.
