ASOS Check Mac – SALE $64.25 (reg $101) | Wool Reefer – SALE $76.09 (reg $144)
All Sizes Available Except Small in Wool Reefer

Parts of the country are already dry and burning up, so purchasing a coat right now might seem like an afterthought. But a huge way to save money on clothes is buying out of season, and that’s why you might want to consider pulling the trigger on an outerwear upgrade now.
This Cotton Check Mac from the British based style site ASOS is a perfect three season coat that could go over just about any non-gray suit. It’s more or less a single breasted trench, but even for the guys who can’t stand the belt, it’s only got two loops so taking it off is completely an option. Or, you could always tie it behind you like the model in the ASOS runway vid.
The winter coat is a wool mix, double breasted, and you’ll be real happy to have it come October. The description says it has a “mock insert,” which I’m assuming is that black zip up thing you see. It doesn’t look that bad at all, but if you really don’t like it, your tailor can probably carefully remove it from the coat for a minimal charge.
These two coats might require some patience before you wear them, but the prices are worth the wait.
My old black peacoat is a little worse for wear, and the grey would definitely be a nice change of pace. I think I’ll jump on wool reefer. I don’t know much about the warmth of certain fabrics though, do you know if those other fabrics aside from the wool (polyester, nylon, etc) will take away from the warmth in the winter? I live in New England, so that’s important :).
I ended up getting the wool winter coat, and just got it in now. The coat runs kinda big and has shoulder pads, so keep that in mind if you are considering it. I am normally a medium, and wear a medium of Gap’s black peacoat they sell each year, but a medium in this was too big. The shoulder pads gave it a very line backer look, and overall it’s a little boxy.
The zipper thing is indeed the mock insert, and it is not removable (thought you’re right a tailor can probably do it). The gray it comes in is actually slightly darker than in the picture.
Overall I actually like it, but need to get a smaller size and possibly have the sides taken in just a little to get rid of the boxiness. Since I’m in no rush I’m gonna return it for an exchange to asos and see how the small fits.
